Surf's Up! But with less fun, fun, fun in the dirty oceans and on the beaches of today. To bring
some attention to this ocean pollution, and to show how very disgusting this stuff really is, the
Surfrider Foundation teamed up with advertising agency Saatchi & Saatchi LA and created
'Catch of the Day'. Trash was collected from the beaches around the U.S. and than packaged like sea
food and left on display at various farmer's markets, complete with tag stickers. The campaign is
site-specific and gives consumers an actual insight on consumption behaviour. Hopefully, creating
awareness, to realise that trash isn't someone else's problem. Click here to see all Catches Of The

Unfortunately I destroyed my Smila Blomma from IKEA, due to mistreatment: I let the bulb come to
close to the plastic. After removing the Blomma the construction of the lamp is as such suitable
that I could turn it easily into a (echo machine on) Construction Helmet Lamp (echo machine off).
It needed just 1 screw, and I can still use the helmet as an helmet. One can even go really nerdish
and turn it into an autarkic lamp by adding a solar panel or a small windmill onto the helmet.
During working day at the construction site the solar panel or windmill will charge a battery, at
night the helmet can be put on the Smila Blomma construction next to for instance the wardrobe
section of your house. Here it than functions as a 'Honey, I'm home' lamp. John Bosma Construction

'America is addicted to oil', said George Bush*. Whilst he said America, it could very well be said
for almost the whole world. Large part of the people on this planet are also addicted to coffee.
Now the latter addiction can help the first one. Researchers from the University of Nevada, USA,
have discovered that diesel can be made from coffee grounds (koffiedik). The discovery was done by
accident. Mano Misra, a professor of engineering who conducted the research with Narasimharao
Kondamudi and Susanta K. Mohapatra, said that he realized coffee beans contained a significant
amount of oil. "I made a coffee one night but forgot to drink it," he said.
"The next morning I saw a layer of oil floating on it." The team went to
Starbucks and collected 50 pounds of the black stuff. Analysis showed that even the grounds
contained about 10 to 15 percent oil by weight. The researchers then used standard chemistry
techniques to extract the oil and convert it to biodiesel. Because of the high number of oxidants
in the coffee, the oil turned out to be more stable than other types of biodiesel. The processes of
coffee diesel making is not particularly energy intensive, Dr. Misra said, and the researchers
estimated that biodiesel could be produced for about a dollar a gallon, or 18 Eurocents per
liter**. A problem could be the collecting of grounds efficiently. Dr. Misra said there are few
centralized sources of coffee grounds. The researchers plan to set up a small pilot operation next
year using waste from a local bulk roaster. Even if all the coffee grounds in the world were used
to make fuel, the amount produced, 1,5 billion liter, would be less than 1 percent of the diesel
used in the United States annually. "It won't solve the world's energy problem,".
Dr. Misra said of his work. "But our objective is to take waste material and convert it to
fuel." Biodiesel made from grounds has one other advantage, he said: 'the exhaust smells
like coffee.' Mano Misra, Narasimharao Kondamudi and Susanta K. Mohapatra Coffee Diesel (2008)

"I've made this vest from Gobelins. My mother and I have bought them, mostly in the Zemun
flea market. Gobelins usually hang on walls, in a frame, and when we get bored by them, they end in
a basement, shed, in the garbage, and, in the best event, on markets for second hand goods. For me
it is a good opportunity to acquire a new practical object. Merging them in a new picture I have

On December 11th 2008 the (dutch) critical consumers show 'Keuringsdienst van Waarde' aired a small
documentary about Old Wood. For consumers reused, reclaimed wood is nowadays more popular than new.
It has more story and it's off course touching to use old sheets of wood for furniture or to lay an
old castle floor in your small condo. Because of high demand, old wood has become more expensive.
And thus, it has become lucrative to make new wood old. In the television show is shown how this is
done. For example, wood is tortured and than sold as 'Castle floor'. One can even see where an
angry knight drove his sword into the floor! Watch: http://player.omroep.nl/?aflID=8439034 (dutch

delivered in depths of 40cm and 20cm. Modules are endlessly combinable and fit in every space and
can have almost any possible function one can think of: That's Cilly! 2012architecten have
developed an inspiring collection of Cilly modules. For start there are the basic modules which are
ideal for storage. Fine items can have a place as well: there is wide range of Cilly modules
available fitted with drawers, racks to host wine and glasses, modules to show photo's, shelves to
display books, records, vitrine boxes for gadgets, etc.. For almost all the stuff that surrounds
you, there is a Cilly-module. But there is more. Everything can be illuminated by compatible Cilly
modular lamps: there is a smooth wall armature and an adjustable ceiling light. It's even possible
to go loud since there is a Cilly module with high-end speakers: there is a module containing 2
speakers and a module hosting a very large subwoofer. According to experts the pvc and the round
shape are ideal for your sound system. Available in any color, Cilly modules can be assembled in
such a way that they become your new coffee table, desk, cabinet, dresser, bookcase, wardrobe,
etc.. Or, go large! You can also order 2012 architects to design your Cilly interior. The Cilly
module than becomes the brilliant basic element for your exclusive living room, study, cloakroom,
office, bar or shop interior. An example of such a custom made interior composition can be seen on
the picture. When clicked upon also a series of inspiring Cilly possibilities can be seen. Wanna

For an groupexhibition in gallery E105, Bonn, Germany Studio Elmo Vermijs made
"kastzitbeeld". A piece originate form the fascination for re-use, mobility and
space; existing out of a horizontal and vertical object which has been placed in the middle of the
space. Both confront each other and the visitor in composition, function and material. It awakes
the suggestion of a cupboard and bench and is at the same time an autonomous work. Because it is
built of second-hand crates and wood the piece already has a history before the visitor had the
possibility to observe it. Not only the function and context of the crates and wood changes, but
also the position the user had and now takes. » <a href='1'>original

The Wikado playground was opened 10 October. This playground is designed with 5 windmill wings and
the existing trees on site as a starting point. 4 off the 30 meter long polyester wings are cut
into towers and laying objects. The composition of these big accessible volumes defines the
different areas of the playground. Each tower has its own character: watchtower (with two f-16
cockpits on top) slide-tower (with two reused slides from the old play-garden) water-tower and
'apartment tower. In the 'cage' that is defined by the towers and the nets the kids can play
football on a floor made of recycled football shoes. Now the wikado system is developed and can be
used to generate any size and kind of playground! » <a

In 2009 the Hofpleinlijn, from the Hague to Rotterdam, will stop running. After that a 1,9 km long
building called The Hofbogen and covering the elevated railroad, will hopefully get a park on top:
The Hofpleinparklijn*. In New York soon opens such a park on an elevated railroadtrack: the High
Line. Here vegetation took over the tracks when the last train passed in 1980. Instead of getting
rid of the green and the structure, the plan is to adjust it into a park by creating a variated
green space in order to create a slow environment that permits meandering pace. The High Line as
its own calm world. The green will float over streets and cut through city blocks. The picture is

The Follydock competition brought to life this container origami. The folly architecture
competition, held in 2007 was organised by Lowieke Duran a.o. in Rotterdam. The design passed all
stages of the competition and was eventualy build at Heijplaat, in the harbour area of Rotterdam.
It's made from two, in origamy style folded, 40ft cargo containers. Even the scale model, contained
reused materails. It was made of discarded heating radiators. Construction and welding of the 10
meter tall folly was done by master-welder Vincent Petit. In October of this year (2008) it was
