It won’t be until June when we’ll probably see the officially 4G
iPhone and a week or two (or even earlier/longer depending on the iPhone OS version it comes
with) after that when an appropriate iPhone jailbreak will be released. That’s still more
than 2 whole months away. So, p0sixninja, a member of the Chronic Dev Team who have their own set
of iPhone jailbreak tools, is setting his eyes on a closer goal, the iPad.
He’s posted over at twitter that he’s already accepting donations to begin work on an
appropriate iPad jailbreak (iPhone 3.2
jailbreak), and has provided this screenshot of the latest version of greenpois0n to whet
everyone’s appetite. We don’t know exactly how jailbreak-able iPhone OS 3.2 is so we
can’t categorically say if what he’s proposing is really possible or not.
Nonetheless, the idea of a jailbroken iPad is indeed promising. Just treat this as a heads up
that an iPad jailbreak might be
released sometime in the near (or distant depending on the support he gets) future.
There’s a problem with naming the next iPhone
version 4G. You couldn’t help thinking that it should support 4G networks even if it
didn’t. So what would Apple call the next iPhone? Well, how about iPhone HD? Although
it’s unlikely that Cupertino will copy a Redmond product if only by name, the idea of an
HD-supporting AMOLED iPhone is mouth-watering enough to wish for this year. The iPhone HD in the
video above owes much of its form factor from COWON S9, an AMOLED PMP announced almost two years
ago. Oh, video-conferencing will be available in “The most social iPhone yet.”
This AMOLED PMP was leaked early this year without a photo and now the photo is here! Not only
that the COWON J3
has apparently already won the Reddot Design Award, which is amazing. It’s still the
3.3-inch AMOLED touchscreen PMP that was leaked last January. It doesn’t have WiFi, though.
What it has is Bluetooth and G-Sensor and a capacity that tops 16GB. This is an award-winner?
Anyway, it should feel really good in your hand.
Quite a number of people (150,000 and counting
according to CNN) have already pre-ordered the iPad
which is expected to become available early next month, but for those of you who want to set
yourself apart from the rest of the Apple fan boys, then this blinged out Apple iPad might be more your cup of tea. This iPad
is clad in 11.43 carats of diamonded set in a micro-pave styling. If you’re very particular
with diamonds, the ones used here are graded G/H in color and VS2/SI1 in clarity. It’s made
by Mervis and only a limited number of this type of iPads will go into production. Price is set
for a whopping $19,999.00 and is now available for pre-order. Availability is scheduled on June
1. If average just isn’t good enough for you, this diamond iPad will definitely let
you stand head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd.
Microsoft is unloading a boatload of information about Windows Phone 7 at MIX 2010 including details
on the new
Windows Phone Marketplace, and fortunately, they’ve also treated us to a preview of
what could be Samsung’s first Windows Phone 7 device.
They also showed off the same Windows
Phone 7 LG QWERTY slider we talked about last month. Unfortunately, they didn’t discuss
anything further about these phones apart from their form factor. However, given that Microsoft
is laying down some strict hardware requirements, it’s safe to say that both devices will
have at least a 5-megapixel camera and flash, 256MB RAM, 8GB flash memory, and ARMv7
Cortex/Scorpion processor on-board. Standard features for all Windows Phone 7 devices include GPU
with DirectX9 support, A-GPS, compass, accelerometer, light and proximity sensor. These two,
along with the rest of the first batch phones, will boast of an 800×480 resolution
capacitive touchscreen display as 480×320 displays will only be supported later on.
Hopefully, we’ll get the model names of these two Windows Phone 7 devices sometime later
this week or in the coming months.
Sure it looks plasticky but the COWON V5
HD is still a COWON and we’re betting a lot of COWON’s good qualities has been
retained by their new PMP. To start, the V5 is a 4.8-inch touchscreen PMP boasting HD support.
That’s 720p, viewable via HDMI. Enadget was given a white 16GB.
As a COWON PMP. the V5 is superb on audio and video:
“The V5 is a top-notch media player. Videos load instantly and play back smoothly (even
larger 720p clips), and music tracks do likewise. Fast-forward and rewind functions are also
incredibly snappy, and the display really shines when you throw a higher bitrate movie clip in
here. As for audio quality? It’s as good as it gets.”
We’re glad that Engadget that the interface is responsive and proved to be an improvement
on previous COWONs. The lack of WiFi, though, seems to put a damper on the COWON V5, especially
with a $300 price tag for the 16GB.
Microsoft has just officially unveiled the new Phone Marketplace that will complement and
probably make or break their recently announced
Windows Phone 7 platform.
Apart from the aesthetic changes that’s now streamlined with the new look of the OS,
they’ve finally some change to make it more competitive with the
Apple App Store and Google’s Android Market. Windows
Phone Marketplace now supports credit card purchases, operator billing, and for ad-supported
content as well as a try-before-you-buy scheme. Purchased apps can be pinned to the Quick Launch
screen making it easier to access. It’s also confirmed that the new Windows Phone
Marketplace will be the official exclusive distributor of apps for Windows Phone 7. However,
enterprise customers will be allowed to directly deploy apps to employees bypassing the
Marketplace interface.
It looks like they’ve done a pretty good job in overhauling the whole system to make it
more relevant and up-to-date with today’s standards. The question now is, how many apps
will the Windows Phone Marketplace have once the first batch of Windows Phone 7-based devices
begins to roll out later this year?
In the case of the iPhone, when
its battery dies, Apple will charge you a corresponding service fee to have a new one battery
installed on it.
With the new iPad, however, they
just won’t replace the battery. They’ll give you a new iPad for just $99 exclusive of
shipping charges. This is what they disclosed in their iPad Battery Replacement Program FAQ:
If your iPad requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical
charge, Apple will replace your iPad for a service fee.
Not bad, eh? Getting a new iPad is definitely more well worth it than just getting its battery
replaced. Unfortunately, this policy is only applies to the iPad, but we’re keeping our
fingers crossed and hoping that Apple will have a change of heart and carry it over to the iPhone
as well as the iPod Touch and other iPod models.
Mickey Mouse themed PMPs are coming out of Sony Japan via the S640 and S740 Walkmans. The Disney
S Series Walkmans will be available in a variety of colors starting at 13,800 yen ($152). There
will be three designs available: Mickey, Minnie and the two together. The S640
and S740 were recently announced Walkmans. Apparently, Sony has also lowered their prices for
the Disney version.
Brainstormtech, a blog at CNN site, has the numbers on the iPad
pre-orders. They estimate almost 120,000 units of the Apple tablet has been paid for by customers
via pre-orders. Over two-thirs of the Apple
iPad units were WiFi-only (see the photo) and in capacity choices, the would-be owners were
evenly split between 16GB, 32GB and 64GB.
Victor Castroll, an analyst with Valcent Financial Group, puts it in dolllars:
“Apple has been able to generate over $75 million in revenue in one day on a product that
99.9% of purchasers haven’t touched or for that matter, even seen in person.”
Earlier, it was announced that Apple could only get 300k units on
store shelves at launch day. A couple of days ago, reactions have surfaced around the Web about
ordering
problems. The Apple iPad will be officially available in three weeks time.
