On y

 The last time we
heard from J. Michael Straczynski about his
remake-but-not-really of The Forbidden Planet, it ended up being a lot of misquotes that
the screenwriter quickly refuted.
MTV caught up with him this week, and he explained his take on the classic sci-fi film: "I've
always wanted to do something involving Forbidden Planet. It's my favorite science-fiction
film of all time. I've watched the rights go from one company to the next. I heard that the rights
at Dreamworks were about to expire and I went to Joel Silver and said I think if you move quickly
you can grab it and I can write it. And he did. It's the dream of a lifetime to play in that
universe."
While he remained relatively tight-lipped on the plot, Straczynski was careful to point out what it
isn't. "I told Joel [Silver] this is how you do Forbidden Planet without pissing on the
original that no one has ever thought of. When I told [the idea] to him, his eyes lit up. It's not
a remake. It's not a reimagining. It's not exactly a prequel. You'll have to see it. It's something
that no one has thought of when it comes to this storyline."

With the change in administration it’s time to stop pussyfooting around the issue of
broadband access in the U.S. It quite honestly sucks. Yes, some people have access to FiOS, but
others have access to speeds that rank even lower than the lame 768 kbps classification of broadband
adopted this year (!) by the FCC. Uneven coverage and a lack of competition mean
that we in the U.S. pay more for our broadband than many other countries and that
about 1 percent of the
population can’t get access at all. This has got to change, and the private market
isn’t going to do it because it simply isn’t profitable to string fiber, coax or even
copper everywhere people have settled.
With
consumer groups and industry players calling for a broadband bailout, I’m inclined to
agree, even if it does mean Google gets more broadband subscribers for free. The government needs
to get involved, and it needs to throw some money at the problem — albeit in a highly
organized way. I’ll argue later about what should be done, but first here’s a few
reasons why it’s important. Broadband is like electricity and running water — every
town, if not every person, needs access to it. Not to watch cats on treadmills or download porn,
but because it gives people cheaper access to the world.
Educational Access
Today the New York Times ran an article about the rising costs of
a college education and offered up the idea of distance learning as being one solution to
rising costs. I don’t think distance learning can substitute for the entire college
experience, but having participated in several distance learning classes, it can be used in
conjunction with meetings online or weekly in-person meetings to create a rich
learning and discussion environment. Broadband makes that possible today, and faster speeds will
only add to the interactivity of those online environments — making a college education
more accessible. The kids who most benefit from this are not living in FiOS areas; they are in
poorer areas where ISPs try to avoid or delay launching high speed services. I know, I live in
one of those areas. The government needs to step up to improve this access divide.
Medical Care Improvements
Broadband also can save on medical costs and improve access to health care. A
release issued today highlighted radiologists’ frustration with quality of care.
Ninety-four percent of radiologists surveyed blamed missed or delayed diagnosis on the inability
of medical imaging systems to communicate with information systems of physicians and hospitals.
Delivering radiological scans via broadband requires fat pipes and rapid speeds, but the benefit
to patients, insurers and doctors would be many: fewer scans, faster delivery of images where
they are needed, and lower costs associated with the process.
Telecommuting Expansion
Another benefit of better broadband would be the ability for people to telecommute. This has
far-reaching benefits, from
fewer cars on the roads to increasing a family’s
resilience in the face of economic uncertainty. As a telecommuter, when I change jobs I
don’t have to sell my house, uproot my husband’s career or leave the network of
friends and family who support us. The more people who have that flexibility, the less
traumatizing job loss can be both for the individual family and for a particular region.
Those are a few of the reasons the government should care about broadband access. Broadband can
help promote an educated citizenry, could help lower the costs of providing health care and could
increase workforce flexibility and decrease traffic. So while older generations of legislators
might deride the web as a series of tubes, the truth of the matter is those tubes could be the
lifeblood for citizen access to education, information and services. We need policies and funding
to make sure broadband reaches everyone, and we need it today. It would’t be a bailout. It
would be an investment.

Let’s Tap is another mini-game compilation for the Wii, but the unique concept of tapping a
cardboard platform to control the games makes it stand out. Unfortunately, Let’s Tap only has
four games so it’s a micro mini-game collection. I played Tap Runner at TGS and it was pretty
fun so I’m still looking forward to Let’s Tap, but not as much after seeing this
trailer.
Rhythm Tap is essentially Taiko Drum Master with tap control and a mode where four players hit
different notes. Silent Blocks is similar to Jenga… with tapping and a
puzzle based alchemy mode where you can clear same color pieces. Bubble Voyager looks like the
strongest single player game out of Let’s Tap and It’s essentially the Balloon Trip
mode from Balloon Fight. The rest of the package is padded with visualizers. I suppose this
isn’t too bad since Let’s Tap is priced like a second tier Wii game at 5,040 yen ($55)
(note: games with this price usually retail for $39.99 in the US), but Let’s Tap has more
visualizers than games.
Sega will shove Let’s Tap into stores on December 18, the same day they are releasing Bleach:
Versus Crusade and the Wii version of Sonic: Unleashed in Japan. Launching a new intellectual
property title among two staple franchises can’t be a good early sign for Let’s
Tap.

The Rothschild Petersen Patent Model Museum, in

model? Between 1790 and 1880 inventors had to submit working models along their patent filing.
Like many Makers, I'm crazy about tiny functioning models of mechanical things, and would love to
go see these in person someday. Maybe I can convince the producers to shoot some video there for
season two of Make: television...

Lots of small publishers championed WiiWare while big guns like Electronic Arts, Capcom and Sega
strayed away from it. On December 16 Sega will take their first step onto WiiWare with Let’s
Catch, a project done with Yuji Naka’s studio Prope. Let’s Catch is pretty much what it
sounds like - a motion controlled game of catch. Players throw baseballs by swinging the remote
forward just like the baseball game in Wii Sports. Also like Wii Sports you can use your Mii in the
game.
Let’s Catch introduces a few modes like a speed catching challenge and unexpectedly a story
to follow. When you have company over you can play Nine Trial which has players toss balls to
shatter nine pieces of a 3×3 square or Bomber catch which is like hot
potato with Miis. Also somehow aliens are part of Let’s Catch.
Right now I’m not convinced Let’s Catch is really going to be substantial enough for a
1,000 Point ($10) WiiWare game. It looks more like a diversion or filler until Let’s Tap
comes out, but I’m generally curious to see what Yuji Naka has been working on now that
he’s independent.

"camera cars" placed at certain location to capture the action. You can see tandem drifting on
tracks like Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta and even the Nurburgring. As you can imagine, figuring out
how to correctly film the drifting, getting two to five cars to make a good run together, and then
finally compiling the footage took quite a while. You can read more about how they did it on the a
