We'll be totally honest -- we pretty much blew Ruslan Kogan off when he
proclaimed that he was about to push out a $199 Android phone by the year's end. And
truthfully, the guy still hasn't totally delivered, but you won't find us kvetching about
more Googlephones, regardless of MSRP. The Agora (AU$299; US$192) and Agora Pro (AU$399; US$256)
are available for pre-order as we speak, though neither are scheduled to ship out until the end of
January. For those unfamiliar with
Kogan, it's an online-only enterprise that has wares built specifically to its dimensions in
China, and so far as we can tell, it's as legit as they come. As for specs, the Agora packs a
2.5-inch touchscreen (320 x 240), 3G networking, a backlit QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 2.0 and a
microSD card slot; the Pro adds in GPS, 2-megapixel camera and WiFi. So, with unsubsidized prices
this low, are you willing to take a chance?

Apple this week has won a trademark infringement lawsuit against a Chinese electronics company. New
Apple Concept Digital Technology Co. was ordered to pay 400,000 yuan (~$58,000 USD), completing a
battle between the two companies that began in 2006 when the Shenzhen-based manufacturer was
ordered to stop using its trademark, according to China Central Television. New Apple Concept had

When Google pulled
out of its proposed search advertising deal with Yahoo last month, it was chief legal counsel
David Drummond who made the announcement. He cited concerns of a “protracted legal
battle,” but only now do we learn that the Justice Department was only three hours away
from filing an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal. Sandy Litvack, the prosecutor hired by the
justice Department to head up the case, tells Am Law Daily:
We were going to file the complaint at a certain time during the day. We told them we were
going to file the complaint at that time of day. Three hours before, they told us they were
abandoning the agreement.
. . . It would have ended up also alleging that Google had a monopoly and that [the advertising
pact] would have furthered their monopoly.
When it came down to the wire, Google blinked. It was the right move. But Google is on notice
that the DOJ considers it a near-monopoly, and will treat it as such if need be. At least until
the Obama Administration takes over. Then Google CEO Eric Schmidt can remind them how hard he
campaigned for them to win.

The biggest film of 2008 arrives on Blu-ray and DVD this December 9th, and Cinematical is
here to share our initial impressions, likes and dislikes, as well as let you know whether this
monster piece of home entertainment is worth the purchase. Perhaps time will tell if The Dark
Knight is the best comic book movie ever made, but in the meantime it's fairly
easy to declare it the best comic book movie of 2008. Director Christopher Nolan and his team of
Bat-freaks brought out the bigger guns for this sequel, adding more explosions, more depth, more
darkness and more Gotham. The result is an action-packed psychological salad full of delicious
performances and fantastic visuals.
In fact, that's exactly why you'll want to own this thing -- it just looks ... so ... good. On the
Blu-ray disc, for example, the film alternates between aspect ratios, showing the IMAX-filmed
scenes in 1.78:1, and the rest in 2.40:1. Sure, it's a bit different than watching it on a
seven-story screen, but the IMAX sequences (in particular the opening bank heist) will no doubt
take your television hostage and seduce every inch of your geek-obsessed body. Is it somewhat
annoying to dance between two aspect ratios during the film? Not really, except that you'll wish
the entire saga was shot with IMAX cameras. If you haven't yet watched a flick on Blu-ray, do
yourself a favor and pop your HD cherry on The Dark Knight.
Now follow us after the jump for more ...

Like me, the Wi-Fi Alliance is based in Austin, so I asked them if they wouldn’t mind
setting up a home tour that would allow me to see the future of Wi-Fi in action. In the segment
below, I sit down with Kelly Davis-Felner, marketing director of the Wi-Fi Alliance, whose home I
visited to talk about Wi-Fi on handsets as well as the future of Wi-Fi peering, which would
create device networks independent of the Internet.
Davis-Felner says the Alliance has certified 249 mobile handsets since 2003, 106 of them this
year alone. She expects Wi-Fi on handsets to be more common in the years to come — a
prediction that, after reading our readers’ opinions of the BlackBerry Storm
shipping without Wi-Fi, I wholeheartedly agree with. And in the last two minutes of the
video, Davis-Felner talks about networking WiFi-enabled devices for sharing photos, playing games
or printing without ever having to access the web.

Here's an interesting article on
Nanowerk about coating cotton yarn in carbon nanotubes (CNT) to make it conductive. While
still a ways off from DIY use, this is an intriguing step forward for wearables! Looks like they
could learn a thing or two about making a sewable LED, though.
(Thanks, Sean!)
From the Maker Shed:
Lilypad E-Sewing Kit
The LilyPad e-sewing
kit contains the bits to sew LEDs into any piece of clothing. Add turn signals to a jacket,
accentuate a t-shirt, or light-up your favorite pair of jeans with this simple to use kit. This
kit contains the very basics to the LilyPad system. It's a great entry-level kit for people who
want to experiment with wearable electronics. Consider adding the LilyPad Pro Kit to extend
control and use of the LilyPad system.
Features:
- 5 LilyPad Bright White LEDs
- 3 LilyPad Button Boards
- 2 Coin Cell Batteries 20mm
- 1 Coin Cell Holder
- 1 Spool 4Ply Conductive Thread

I have about 15 lengthy slideshows to export to .mov files in iPhoto 08', this takes a while for
each one. Is there anyway I can make it batch export so I don't have to keep hopping back to my
computer to set the next one to export? Automator looks like a promising tool for this, but I'm not
sure how to make it select a different slideshow each time and give it a different name? Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
