Florin made a giant TV-B-Gone... 48 IR
LEDs and an ATmega8 that sends the signals to the LEDs. Source code and schematics included. He
writes -
I arranged the LED’s in 4 rows of 12 pieces and the resistors fit quite nicely between the
LED’s. I used four BD139 NPN transistors to drive the rows. It took me hours to drill and
then solder this board(48 LED’s and 48 resistors mean 192 holes plus the other parts). The
controller board contains an ATmega8 chosen because of it’s 8k memory needed to store all
the codes, an 8 MHz crystal, an LED, a tact switch and some resistors and capacitors. I designed
the board so that it can also be used for other projects.

I just sent back my original iPod touch 2G and when I got it back I noticed a little dent on the
chrome. Not on the back, but I little dent on the front, close to the screen. I dont think its a
big deal, but Im afraid that might mean that the screen was put in roughly or something. And I
already sent back my iPod so this will be my third if I send it back :(.
So would you?

 So you might be
wondering what a picture of Eric Bana swigging a beer in a
Hulk t-shirt has to do with the remake of a French thriller. Well, the answer I'm afraid
is nothing, its just one of my favorite pictures of the Aussie actor -- but back to the business at
hand. Variety reports that
Millennium Films is currently in talks with Bana to star in their remake of the French thriller,
Le Convoyeur (now titled,
Armored).
The original film was written and directed by Nicolas
Boukhrief, but Millennium have their eye on F. Gary Gray ( The Italian Job) to take over
the remake. The script was also given a re-working by David Ayer ( Training Day)
and Andrew Kevin Walker. The story centers on a man (presumably to be played by Bana) working for
an armored car company who manages to ingratiate himself into a heist planned by his co-workers.
But as it turns out, our protagonist has his own motives for weaseling his way into this band of
lowlifes.
Bana had originally been set to star in the flick before dropping the project to play Nero in J.J.
Abram's Star Trek
reboot. So what could have changed his mind? According to Variety, Bana "has a deal negotiated
down to what sources described as a $7.5 million paycheck." Not bad for a guy who has yet to really
break out as a leading man.
Bana's schedule would appear to be packed for the foreseeable future, including promoting
Trek and the romantic weepy, The Astronaut's Wife. Not to mention he will be
making his directing debut with the documentary, Love the Beast, later this year.
Armored is scheduled to start production on April 1st, so Millennium is going to have to
work fast if they want to convince Bana to sign on -- I personally can think of 7.5 million reasons
to sign on the dotted line.

New image recognition webapp ALIPR (Automatic Linguistic Indexing of Pictures in
Real-Time) is a on a mission to assign relevant tags to digital images based on their content, and
wants you to help it learn. While digital image recognition has come a long way in recent years,
it's still got a long way to go, and ALIPR's got its share of hits and misses. Upload an image to
ALIPR or hand it a URL of an image already online, and the engine will suggest tags, and ask you to
add to its list. Some of ALIPR's suggestions are spot-on, but others are way off. You can confirm
the hits and suggest other tags to help the engine learn. Check out how ALIPR did with a few images
from my Flickr photostream.
Given a photos of boats in the harbor and a skyline, ALIPR does pretty well with its tag
suggestions:

But a clear photo of a spider doesn't net any tags that apply:

Given a more confusing photo of a rock sculpture outside a building, ALIPR identifies the sky and
buildings:

But a clear photo of a fire only returns the "orange" tag, not the word fire:

The concept of ALIPR is super exciting for anyone who's building a library of digital photos,
because the most tedious parts of organizing and searching your photos is adding relevant keywords
to them. So automatic photo tagging, when done well and accurately, could be a huge time saver.
Can't wait to see ALIPR-like technology built-in to a desktop photo organizer like Picasa. In the
meantime, you can also use ALIPR's growing library of tagged photos to search for images by keyword
as well.

Goodie! The long, excruciating wait for more information on Cowon's exceptionally sleek O2 PMP is finally over, and two of the more important tidbits you could ever want to
know have been revealed. The PMP, which supports a gaggle of file types including MP3, OGG FLAC,
AAC, WMA, DivX, MPEG4 and WMV (just to fire off a few), will arrive with a 4.3-inch touchscreen,
SDHC card slot, 8GB / 16GB / 32GB of internal capacity, an internal speaker, TV output (up to
720p), 10-band custom equalizer, 18-hours of battery life for audio playback (8-hours for video),
optional T-DMB TV tuner / e-dictionary functionality and your choice of pink, black or white
motifs. The real news? An October 13th ship date in South Korea along with prices ranging from
?294,000 ($224) for the stripped-down 8GB edition to ?399,000 ($305) for the 32GB edition with a
DMB tuner. Yanks, sadly, will have to wait.
