Most gamers have never heard of Braunstein. Sad but true. In the hierarchy of self-awareness
you’ll find the circle of gamers who know what D&D is (a very, very large circle), then
inside of that is the circle of gamers who know what Greyhawk is (large but smaller), and inside
that the circle who knows what Blackmoor is (smaller still). And then in the very center,
vanishingly small, are the people who’ve heard of Braunstein. Which is a pity, because
Braunstein is the granddaddy of them all. Braunstein:
the Roots of Roleplaying Games. The first role-playing game was run by soldier David Wesely in 1967, his group including none
other than D&D co-creator Dave Arneson.
This past GenCon Braunstein
was revived! Here's
what the players had to say. Handouts from an earlier Braunstein
revival.
David Wesely's post-game comments. [via Rob McDougall]
David Wesely provides further background
(posting as weseld1) including that his inspiration for introducing the figure of a "referee"
(a.k.a. game master or dungeon master) came from Strategos, The American Game of War by
Lt. Charles Adiel Lewis Totten. Rob
McDougall tells the
story of Totten. Wesely also mentions two books of game theory which had a great influence on
him, one of which The Compleat Strategyst, was a bestseller put out by the RAND Corporation. Rob McDougall traces the history of roleplaying back to
RAND.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Hanna contines to drench the northeast US, with some areas getting as

It's too early to even start talking about the next generation of
iPhones. We're going to wait for next year's rumors about any potential iPhone 3 handset. The
iPhone still needs a few changes so we should definitely get a newer version.
But in the mean time we found this picture wandering around the internet.
Wouldn't you like such an iPhone successor? Sure it's just a picture and we're treating it
accordingly, but such a concept phone
would be a real hit.

Our school has roughly 300 MacBooks assigned out to students. Each MacBook is bound to our Xserve
through Open Directory and also to our Active Directory Server. All log-in/ account info comes
through active directory. The first time students log in, it asks them to set up a mobile account
and we have them click create. We have been getting complaints from students that when they are off
our schools network, logging in takes about 5 minutes. In what we have seen, the student types
their log-in info and click log in, the login windows grays out and sits there for a few and
finally logs in. Now, when they are on our network, they get logging in immediately. It seems to me
when ever a student logs-in, it is searching for either Active Directory or Open Directory and
preventing the user from logging in immediately. What setting am I missing that will prevent this
from happening?
Thanks!

If you are still stuck with a shackled iPhone
3G, you might want to know that the enterprising individuals of iPhone Dev Team have
announced the availability of the new Pwnage Tool 2.0.3. Nothing much to it other than going on
with its business of jailbreaking iPhones, with a few small improvements:
-
- .de localization for German users
-
- Beta installer app has been updated to beta
-
- Now supports iPhone and iPod Touch firmware 2.0.2 5C1
-
Head over to iPhone Dev
Team's blog or hit update if you already have an older version of the Pwnage Tool
running. Keep in mind that this is for OSX only and for Windows, you could try the QuickPwn
available from the same guys.

We have a new phone set to arrive soon from Verizon
Wireless. The LGVX9600 has just been approved by the FCC. There's no official new from either
Verizon or LG. The phone
will have CDMA 850/1900 support, EVDO and Bluetooth with A2DP connectivity. There's a 3 inch LCD
screen with a resolution of 480x240. A QWERTY
keyboard is also said to be available. The game pad will go well with the 3D graphics GUI.
The MP3 player with BGM and Bluetooth 2.1 with EDR will play its part.
There's no news on pricing and availability and certain features still need confirmation, but the
VX9600is going to be made official.

Ok what did apple think? Do we really want to re-arrange all of our icons after every updating of
apps? Why can't they just stay where they are and be updated?
I really hope this changes with 2.1 cause it's really annoying.

As we suspected earlier this year when first TM506 shots appeared
through the FCC,
this Sony Ericsson handset became available from T-Mobile. The 3G device is waiting for you in
T-Mobile stores starting today. It will retail for just $79.99 after some rebate and with a
contract.
Besides HSDPA support in T-Mobile's
young 3G network you will get a 2 megapixel camera, built-in music player with stereo
Bluetooth and TeleNav navigation. All in all not that bad for the price it comes with.

Okay
This morning I turned off my iPhone because it froze when opening Settings.
Then I turned it on again, the Apple logo came up, and hasn't moved for an hour!
This is the second time it's happened to me, and I can't remember what I did the first time.
Please help! It's so frustrating not having a phone!
