A 91-year-old Jersey City woman was conned by a burglar pretending to be a utility company
employee. He told her that there was a water emergency and that if she didn't hold down the flusher
on her toilet, the house would explode. Meanwhile, he stole almost $4000 in cash from her
apartment. From The Jersey Journal: The man first opened and shut a faucet in the kitchen and then
went into the victim's bathroom where he flushed the toilet, reports said. The man then instructed
the victim to "hold down the flush handle or else the house will explode," reports said... But
after about two minutes, the victim told police "I didn't care if the house exploded" and walked
into her living-room, at which time she discovered her house had been ransacked, reports said.

Oh sure, you could select Dell's
multitouch-enabled Latitude XT over HP's latest, but given the $1,829 starting price of the
former, we'd say the TouchSmart
tx2z is looking a lot more delectable these days. Hailed as the first multitouch "consumer"
convertible tablet (a claim that's certainly open for debate), the 12.1-inch tx2 gets going at just
$1,149.99, though HP's "recommended" configuration starts at $1,223.99. The baseline setup includes
Vista Home Premium, a 2.1GHz AMD Turion X2, 3GB of DDR2 RAM, an ATI Radeon HD 3200 graphics set,
250GB of HDD space and a built-in webcam. As of now, the estimated build date shows December 8th,
so we'd get that order in five minutes ago if you're looking to ensure a holiday delivery.
Two new releases this week, including an animated comedy and a teen romance with a hint of
horror.
Bolt What's It All About: Animated family feature from Disney about a canine actor who
doesn't realize the amazing feats he performs on television are really just special effects.
Featuring the voices of John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, and Malcom McDowell. Why It Might Do Well: The trailer is appealing and slapping Miley Cyrus's name on
anything geared at kids is like having a license to print money. Combine that with an 85% fresh
rating at Rottentomatoes.com, and this one
should open to impressive numbers.
Why It Might Not Do Well: The Madagascar sequel is still out, so it may siphon
off some of the audience Bolt is shooting for. Number of Theaters: 3,500
Prediction: $42 million Twilight
What's It All About: A teenage girl moves to Washington state to live with her father and
soon falls in love with a local boy. Her new heartthrob, however, has no heart beat as he and his
family are vampires.
Why It Might Do Well:Twilight is based on a best-selling series of novels with
an ardent fan following ensuring that come this Friday theaters will be filled with goth-tinged
teen angst both on an off screen. Why It Might Not Do Well: I don't see that happening. In fact I think this will be
the number one flick.
Number of Theaters: 3,200
Prediction: $44 million
The big question is how well Quantam of Solace is going to do in its second
week. I'm betting that both of the new releases will outdo Mr. Bond, leaving him shaken but not
stirred. Here's my prediction. 1. Twilight
2. Bolt
3. Quantum of Solace
4. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
5. Role Models

Michael wanted a bike stand, but didn't want to pay, and wanted to use
it as a project to build his Computer Aided Design and fabrication skills.
We had been using ProDesktop by PTC, to learn how to design mechanical parts. He was doing the tutorials along with his classmates. He
worked out the idea in Lego parts. He studied the existing mechanism available from Park Tools.
He designed the individual parts, and made an assembly in ProD. When he had the system Then he
took the drawings and laid them out on wood and cut using traditional woodshop tools. The full
assembly and process are visible on his wiki.
Michael did this project while he was a freshman or sophomore at Duxbury High School. It showed me both the incredible power of
the design
process, and the amazing things that can happen when you put powerful design tools into the
hands of a motivated student. He is now a Senior in
Industrial and Mechanical Engineering at Umass Amherst. Graduate school and a promising
career figure are just a few of the things in his future. When he did this project many years
ago, I could see many possibilities for the techniques and the student.
How do you use Make and Craft
to help teach? Have these publications changed the way you see projects and education? Do you
have success stories of students who have created amazing things or gone on to fascinating
careers as Designers or Makers? Give them and your program a plug by posting into the comments or
adding photos and videos of their work in the Make Flickr pool.

How to make water bounce from Edison's desk. Using a
high-speed camera setup in the lab, GE scientists captured details of water droplets dancing on
amazing superhydrophobic surfaces developed in GE Global Research's Nanotechnology lab. Tao
writes -
Hello everyone, I have some exciting videos that I want to share with you! Using a high-speed
camera setup in the lab, we can finally capture the details of the water dancing on these amazing
superhydrophobic surfaces. We discovered that even when the surfaces had the same contact angle for
stationary water droplets, their ability to resist the wetting of impacting droplets could be
totally different. In the following three videos, the contact angles of a stationary droplet on all
three surfaces are ~150 degree. When an impacting droplet (with the same impact speed) hits on the
surfaces, the droplet can either stay on the surface.
Look at the way the water droplet spreads, recoils, breaks into satellite droplets, and
completely lifts off... that’s what we really want for an impacting-droplet resistant
surface! You might wonder what we can do with a cool thing like this? Imagine applications that
involve high speed water droplets, such as wind turbine blade, airplane wing, or even just your
car in motion. These are just a couple of the exciting possibilities that we are looking at.

Boing Boing Gadgets reader Tucker Cummings bought the Bandai Gun O'Clock and reviewed it for us! He
loves it as a novelty, but apparently as an alarm clock it, er, misses the mark. From Boing Boing
Gadgets: The Gun O'clock has all the fun of Duck Hunt on the NES. Which is to say, it's fun, but I
wish there was more to do. Both game modes are designed for very short rounds of play, which I
found tremendously disappointing. The clock's display goes to sleep after a few minutes. The
backlight turns off, and the numbers turn from red to black, rendering the clock pretty much
useless. Clearly, this is not the clock you should buy if you are looking for a useful time piece.
But chances are, if you bought this clock, it was for the coolness factor. And there is plenty of
cool to be found. Bandai Gun O'Clock alarm clock review...br style="clear: both;"/ a

An instrumental rock band from London, England, Loss of a Child use pianos, string sections,
guitars and drums to create a classically-influenced post-rock noise. With elements boarding on
quiet ambience and others with distorted guitars and crashing drums, the ambitious nature with the
classical instruments sets Loss of a Child apart from many leftfield acts, producing a hugely epic
sound. 'Caught and Lost' is the natural progression from Loss of a Child's debut, continuing the
ideal of producing an album over a collection of songs. 'Caught and Lost' is essentially a 40+
minute piece, and works all the better for it. The emotions vary throughout, taking the listener on
a journey from beginning to end. Loss of a Child has expanded it's sound to create a masterpiece of
originality within instrumental rock.

You've been adequately teased with what all USB
3.0 (or SuperSpeed USB, as we tend to refer to it) can do, but a gaggle of companies took the
chance in San Jose, California to really demonstrate just how quick the protocol is. Most notable
was the demo by Synopsys, which prototyped an HDTV video transmission system based on USB 3.0 and
showed to wide-mouthed onlookers that an uncompressed 1080p feed at 30 frames-per-second could be
whisked along at around 450Mbps. Sure, USB 3.0 has wireless HD to watch out for, but given that said
technology is currently on track for an August 2298 release, it could really do some tethered
damage in the meanwhile.
