width="130" height="165" /Nothing says serious about cost cutting and process quite like hiring a
CFO with a black belt in Six Sigma management. With or without the tanking economy, Google (a
href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=GOOG" class="ticker"
title="GOOG"NSDQ: GOOG/a) has been heading towards maturing growth—you can't
keep up triple-digit growth or even double-digits indefinitely—and the addition
of McKinsey vet and Bell Canada planning exec Patrick Pichette as CFO a

August/a was one sign that cost containment was on the way. The slowing of online ad growth coupled
with the unexpected speed of the economic downturn has only accelerated Google's need to show
maturity of a different sort. That would explain tonight's a

article"long WSJ article/a about how Google is taking the responsible approach by cutting back on
its ubiquitous product approach—along with some of the food perks and redundant
offices. CEO Eric Schmidt told the Journal Google has to "behave as though we don't know" what's
coming. That means cutting what Schmidt calls the "dark matter"—"projects that
'haven't really caught on' and 'aren't really that exciting.'" Engineers may still get their 20
percent time but staffing and resources for their projects, particularly those without signs of
real revenue potential, will be much harder to come by. Google needs hits that make money, not just
headlines. /p p -- bNarrow investment focus/b: The top priorities include display and mobile
advertising and Google Apps. Schmidt told the Journal engineers and sales resources are being
diverted to those areas. The paper reports that projects at risk include Google Notebook and Google
Audio Indexing. /p p -- bAdding ads/b: Google hasn't started selling the classic front
page—some of the most expensive real estate left online. But it has added
advertising to Google Finance and will add it in some parts of Google News. /p p -- bHiring
(firing)/b:nbsp; Hiring continues but at a much slower pace. Google execs said this fall that the
company would cut back on contract workers, then numbering about 10,000. Still no specifics.nbsp;

While the LA Times reported that this
long-gestured project was D-E-A-D, a new report in Variety confirms that Dark Shadows is alive and well over at
Warner Bros. Pictures (yay!). They write that Depp's company "Infinitum Nihil also is working
with GK Films and WB on a film transfer of "Dark Shadows" that will have Depp playing Barnabas
Collins." While it might not happen any time soon, it's still nice to know that something
could happen eventually. Over 1,225 episodes, "Dark Shadows" was a highly atmospheric,
spooky soap that featured gothic horror staples like vampires, monsters, witches, werewolves,
ghosts and zombies. The show has a continuing rabid fan base that populates Dark Shadows Festival
conventions.

This is just about the most idiotic film I've seen coming to DVD and since every other horror site
finds it newsworthy, I guess I might as well tell you about it. Arriving on DVD February 10th from
Sony Home Entertainment is AGAINST THE DARK, a new horror film starring Steven Seagal. I know what
you're thinking, do Steven Seagal movies hold up? The answer is simply 'NO'. Read on for more
details on this "gem"...
Warning! This holiday season you will be tempted to purchase one of those set-top boxes that
deliver movies directly to your TV set. You will be lured by the idea of having this content on a
digital tap, serving it up without ever needing to get off the couch. Don’t be fooled!
While these devices and services are definitely getting better — and even
approaching awesome — this holiday season is not the time to buy.
There are a lot of entrants in the set-top box space, but big names you’re already familiar
with will grab most of the attention this season. Apple,
Netflix and now Blockbuster all have set-top box solutions ready to pump piping
hot video content to your TV.
Of the three biggies, the Apple TV has
been out the longest. The box costs $229 for the 40 GB model and $329 for the 160 GB one. It
plays content, which is purchased or rented on an a la carte basis from the iTunes store, as well
as music and other content stored on your network. New releases are available for purchase (but
not always rental) day-and-date with their DVD release.
Why you should wait: Apple makes excellent products, but $229 isn’t chump
change. If you watch a lot of television shows — especially in high definition
(HD) — sticking with your cable or satellite provider might be more
economical. Plus, MacWorld is right around the corner in January. Even though my colleagues
over at The Apple Blog say a hardware update is
unlikely (Apple just did a software update for the device), why take that chance?
Where Apple takes a surgical approach to its
set-top offering, marketing a single solution, Netflix is blasting away with a shotgun —
and that’s not a bad thing. The company has worked tirelessly over the past year to get its
online streaming service up and running on a number of devices including the Roku ($99), TiVo ($149 -
$299), Xbox
($199), and Samsung and
LG
Blu-ray players ($399). Movies are streamed (not downloaded) so there is nothing kept locally on
your device — and HD streams are rolling out across most of the partnerships. Content is an
all-you-can-eat smorgasbord included your Netflix subscription price.
Why you should wait: Netflix offers a subscription plan, rather than a la carte
rentals. Because of complexities in the licensing and release windows, that meansit doesn’t
get access to new releases. So no matter what flavor box you buy, after the novelty of it all
wears off, there aren’t enough titles to choose from (unless you consider Improve Your
Sailing Skills must-see TV).
Blockbuster’s device, launched just last
week, is the latest entry in the set-top box battle. The rental chain is using 2Wire’s MediaPoint
hardware to power the service. Blockbuster says the box is free, but you do have to pre-pay $99
for 25 rentals. Boxes are available through Blockbuster.com and select retailers. The video chain
also said that, like Netflix, it will be integrating its on-demand service into Blu-ray
players and other devices such as game consoles and DVRs. Movies use progressive downloads
(not streams) for DVD-quality video, and the device supports HD. Because the movie rentals are a
la carte, new releases are generally available within 30 days of the DVD release, according to
Blockbuster.
Why you should wait: The service just came out last week, so it hasn’t
gone through a rigorous review process. Let other people find any aggravating bugs before you
plunk down your money for one.
While I may come across as a Debbie Downer, dashing your set-top dreams for this holiday season,
let me offer a bit of optimism. All of these options will only get better and cheaper in the
coming months, so your patience will be rewarded.
How in the holy frijoles is it December already? And why do I get the same stressed, panicked
feeling every year? And why do I harbor such resentment against those who get their Christmas
shopping done early (or prance gaily around their yards stringing up their lights the day after
Thanksgiving)?
*deep breath*
The truth is, when I put myself in the mindset of how much I enjoyed the holidays as a kid, I can
actually get some of those warm, good time-y feelings back. And having two little kids adds to
the fun too. But man oh man, the stress returns every year, as sure as the commercials.
Music, of course, is the key to bringing back some of that positive holiday
energy. Since 1994, this collection of tunes has steered the way (or the sleigh, heh). I taped
this special off the radio that holiday season. I’ve said this all before, but Bruce
Cockburn is a warm, comforting musical presence in my life, and listening to him sing these great
songs and play the guitar like only he can - well - it’s better than a fridge full of nog.
Now, Nanci Griffith joins Bruce here, and sings some songs of her own (”Wexford
Carol”, “Grafton Street”, “Going Back to Georgia”, etc.). But
it’s the Bruce tunes that resonate with me: “Shepherds” opens the show, and has
always been a song that pops into my head throughout the year, for some reason:
“Glooooooria, in the hiiiighest.” I’m not heavy into the religion, mind you,
but when Bruce sings, I’m a believer; “Deer Dancing Around a Broken Mirror”, a
spirited and lush instrumental tune; “Huron Carol”, a song written in the
1600’s by a Jesuit missionary to the Huron Indians, and sung in the Huron language. Bruce
gives a wonderful introduction, and reads the English translation beforehand; and of course, two
favorites of mine: “I’m Gonna Fly Someday” and “One Day I Walk”.
Sublime.
Enjoy. And hey, happy holidays, eh? Oh, and always a reminder for you fellow Yanks that
haven’t heard of Bruce from the great white north - it’s CO-Burn.
Co sounding like So. Ho ho ho.

It'd already
been known that HTC got a little help from the boys and girls at San Fran-based One & Co in
designing its beautiful, WinMo-defying TouchFLO 3D user interface along with the
Touch Diamond on which it premiered;
apparently, HTC likes the result so much that it's snapping the privately-held firm right off the
market. One & Co's expertise certainly isn't limited to phones -- its clients span from
Coca-Cola to Adidas, Dell, and Palm -- and interestingly, HTC has decided that the move won't spell
the end of the design consultancy, so if you were hoping to get your hands on an HTC-designed K2
snowboard, you might just have a shot. We're told that the injection of fresh thought that found
its way into the Diamond will ultimately filter its way through HTC's entire lineup, which we're
taking to mean Android- and WinMo-based devices alike -- and sorry, G1, but if this means that we can eventually land a
Google-powered set with a giant display and some glossy facets on its rear, you know you're getting
eBayed right quick.

height="290" Mobile phone operating systems and a reheated web browser war: that's how we'll recall
the year 2008 when it comes to software. From brand new to revamped browsers and mobile platforms
and apps, 2008's been good to technophiles who like their data in the cloud and accessible wherever
they are. Let's take a look back at this year in software, and some of the best new and improved
applications, web services, and mobile platforms that were born in 2008. Looking back at the last
12 months, these are the apps that get a gold foil-wrapped chocolate coin from us this year. iPhoto

because of a href="http://lifehacker.com/392160/top-10-firefox-3-features"the "AwesomeBar" and the
rest of the "Had no idea I needed this but now I love it!" features/a it offers, but because the
launch itself was a grass-roots community-driven effort towards making software history. Indeed, on
June 17th of this year, the makers of Firefox a

for most software downloads in a given day/a, at more than eight million downloads of the new

width="135" height="135"While Mozillians and Firefox users celebrated across the globe over the
summer, no one knew that search powerhouse Google was in the software development lab cooking up
their own lean, mean browsing machine that would forsake all of the fox's bells and whistles (and
extensibility) to run Javascript-based applications lightening-fast. On September 2nd, Google
released the first beta of a href="http://google.com/chrome/"Chrome/a, their new web browser which

usage by Lifehacker readers. (Last month's browser breakdown for Lifehacker readers was 62%
Firefox, 22% IE, 8% Safari, and 6% Chrome. Not bad for a browser that's been out only a few
months.) For more Chrome goodness, see our a

height="135" align="right" class="right" Yeah, yeah, the iPhone launched in 2007, but this year the
iPhone 2.0 software and the new iPhone 3G model with a faster data plan and GPS came out to hype
almost as big as the original iPhone launch. The combination of an operating system that finally
ran third-party apps officially plus pinpointy GPS goodness set the bar for what users can expect
to get from the next generation of smartphone with a fast internet connection, full-on browser, and
spot-on location-awareness. Plus, dozens of the apps available for the phone are free. At first, we

The iPhone 2.0 launch did start to show some of the cracks in the Apple armormdash;several of the
earliest versions of the software were crash and freeze-prone, requiring many users to uninstall
apps and reset their phone software to fix maddening keyboard delays and application crashes.
Meanwhile, Apple's approval-only App Store left a few applications out in the cold. Still, the
iPhone 2.0 software created a compelling mobile platform and app marketing campaign that made Aunt
Bertha really want to try that Neil Diamond song out on Shazam.br clear="all"/p h3

on ruling over what you can and cannot do on your phone, it's not surprising the enthusiastic
