If you wouldn't mind looking up from that avatar creation screen for a second -- yes, we're aware
of how much that t-shirt selection means about you as a person -- you might notice that your Xbox
360 is dead. At least, a few hapless souls on the Xbox forums seem to think NXE is to blame for such atrocities. Numerous folks are
reporting variously bad red ring configurations, random freezing and a huge pile of blockbuster
titles that won't just play themselves. The biggest problem is that Microsoft isn't universally
treating problems caused by NXE as an "oh, our bad" sort of situation, and at least from anecdotes
we're seeing has charged quite a few folks $100 to fix their freshly-out-warranty Xbox 360s -- not
to mention separating them for weeks from their precious murder simulators.

Today, Ultra-wideband chip makers Artimi and
Staccato Communications announced $20 million in funding and a merger agreement, which seems
like tying two leaky boats together, giving them some more gas and hoping they make it to shore.
The combination of Artimi and Staccato brings together the two UWB
companies that were rumored to be running out of cash (as most of the other players had received
cash earlier this year).
I have my doubts about the future of UWB, the high-speed
personal area networking technology, after the closure of UWB chipmaker WiQuest, the
bankruptcy of
UWB chip firm Focus Enhancements and the halt of Intel’s UWB research program, but
belief in UWB apparently remains high. Alereon CEO Eric Broockman, earlier this month, told me he
believed that cell phones might be the eventual killer application for UWB, as people could use
it for high-speed data transfers without sucking up a lot of power. He pointed out that SK
Telecom, which had invested in Alereon this year showed a prototype handset with UWB chips
inside. Maybe there is hope, but I’m not betting on those boats
reaching the shore.

The How it Works series returns with the installment every laptop owner needs to read: batteries.
Unlike previous How It Works articles, this is a situation where explaining how the battery itself
works is largely irrelevant. Instead, it's more important to know how to choose a battery, how to
save battery life, and how the battery itself decays.

The always
quotable basketball star Shaquille O’Neal (see: Kobe,
How’s My #$! Taste?) is on Twitter, and it is without a doubt, the real Shaq. Twitter
welcomed the Phoenix Suns star to the service in a blog post,
and The New York
Times has a profile of how the giant found his way onto the microblogging tool. Apparently, a
Shaq impersonator had been sending out messages, so like Britney, Shaq took matters into his own
huge hands and setup an account.
However, unlike Britney, @THE_REAL_SHAQ is all Shaq. He’s
posting most of his updates via txt message, with highlights including “This is straight
from the shaqs mouth I love phil jackson Kobe bryant is the best palyer [sic] in the game”
and “Why does shane battier always were that golf masters jacket on the bench, lol.”
Some of the references might not make much sense if you don’t closely follow pro basketball
and have a familiarity some of Shaq’s hilariously candid sound bites through the years. But
if you do, do yourself a favor and follow @THE_REAL_SHAQ - it’s must-see Tweeting. Even if
you don’t, it’s an authentic look into the daily life of one of the world’s
most recognizable celebrities. It remains to be seen if the Kazaam star will interact with any of his followers.

FanIQ, a sports site
that focuses more on entertaining its users than bogging them down with the stats and opinion
pieces found on the likes of ESPN, has had a landmark year. The site launched in 2006, but
hasn’t really hit its stride until now: since January, the site has grown by over 2000%,
recently hitting as many as 2.4 million unique users and 1.5 million registered members. These
figures pale in comparison to the larger sports sites and popular fantasy leagues, but the rate
of growth is very impressive nonetheless.
FanIQ differentiates itself from other sports sites by offering a set of casual games and
community features alongside more traditional sports headlines. To encourage participation, the
site has a points system that rewards users who write blog posts and play the site’s
integrated trivia game. These points are just for show (though CEO Ty Shay says that many users
are still intensely competitive about them), but in the future the site will offer virtual goods
and other rewards in exchange for points.
The site has raised around $3-5 million in funding (the exact amount was not disclosed), with
investors including Vantage Point Ventures, Peter Thiel, Paul Martino, Keith Rabois, and Jeff
Fluhr. Other startups in this space include Open Sports (which
has a similar web portal) and Watercooler
and Citizen
Sports, both of which design sports oriented applications for social networks.
