It was a struggle getting it "officially" out the door, and the reviews are already lackluster, but
AMD's 45nm, quad-core Phenom II has finally
arrived. It's available in two flavors, the 2.8GHz X4 920 and the 3.0GHz X4 940 Black Edition,
going for $235 and $275, respectively. AMD's naturally touting the ostensible cost savings of the
chips -- they're supposed to split the difference between Intel's Core 2 Quad and Core i7 processor
-- but in reality they seems to trail Intel's offerings pretty soundly on the price / performance
curve. The accompanying Dragon platform includes a Phenom II proc, 4800-series Radeon HD graphics
and a 790-series motherboard, all of which should combine for low power consumption -- up to 40
percent compared to Phenom processors. Where the Phenom II definitely wins is the fact that some
AMD folks will be able to drop in the chip to existing motherboards, but otherwise it looks like
value hounds and performance junkies aren't being served by this new chip -- at least until
unreasonable
overclocking activities make all the pain go away.
J Sainsbury, the UK supermarket chain, today bucked the gloomy trend in the retail sector by
reporting a 4.5 per cent rise in sales over the Christmas period in what it claims is its best-ever
performance over the festive season.

I've just finished watching the video of Bre Pettis's riveting presentation on Rapid Prototyping at
25C3, the annual Chaos Computer Congress in Berlin. Pettis is one of my favorite makers in the
world, and this presentation covers every aspect of rapid prototyping, desktop fabbing, 3D printing
(and whatever else you want to call it). From the technology underpinning it to the history of the
form to the practicalities of clubbing together to buy expensive machinery to the philosophy,
economics and emotional satisfaction of decentralized making, Pettis runs the whole gamut, with
humor, humility, and a thoroughgoing knowledge of the subject. From automated knitting machines
that go from "I'm cold" to "I have a scarf" in fifteen minutes to sugar-based 3D printers to
papercraft CAD to laser cutters and robotic Dremel tools, Pettis paints a picture of a future where
something can go from your head to the real world with the fluidity of a blog post. Prototype Your

JibJab, the musical comedy video maker that’s
branched out into customizable online greeting cards, has raised $7.5 million in Series C
funding.
Venice, Calif.-based JibJab has aggressively staked out a way to make money that goes beyond its
regularlyviralhit
videos — subscriptions for “sendable,” customizable, and exclusive content
of $15.99 per year, as well as other paid goods like custom mugs. The company finagled its way
into OfficeMax’s massively popular holiday ElfYourself video campaign this
year. (Though sadly, upon reading the site tonight, I learned that ElfYourself videos expire Jan.
15. Sadness!) See above for a (free) example video I just quickly
made of Obama as B-boy in triplicate.
JibJab claimed in an email more than 100 million visits to its site in the last year and 6
million registered users, though it didn’t disclose the number of paying users.
The new funding comes from Overbrook Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment, and previous
investor Polaris Venture Partners.
JibJab didn’t previously disclose details of its funding, but it was reported that its
first round, raised in 2006, was worth $6.4 million, and its second round, raised in 2007, was
worth $3 million.

//formJust about everyone has been exposed to the concept of flashcards. Whether trying to study
for a geography quiz or learning a foreign language, the method of using QA cards to train your
brain to remember has remained a popular study method. But, the concept hasn't really made the leap
to the Web, until now. Introducing a href="http://cramberry.net/"Cramberry/a, the flashcards you
know and love, only on the Web./p p align="right"emSponsor/embr /a

//a/p pGranted, Cramberry is incredibly simple. The cards are fairly rudimentary, but they serve
the purpose. Quite frankly, they're better than the scribbled notes on index cards that many of us
used. And yet, Cramberry has the potential to be incredibly useful by taking a familiar technique
and making it much easier to use. /p pAfter logging in, you will be prompted to create sets of
cards with any information you want to study. Questions on the front, answers on the back. /p pOnce
the set is ready, you can begin flipping through the cards, testing your knowledge. Then, you can
mark whether you got the answer right or wrong. All of this information feeds the algorithm, which
serves up the cards in an order that helps you practice the topics that you're missing while
keeping you refreshed on the topics you know./p pBut the true value of Cramberry is the fact that
the service makes your flashcards accessible wherever you go. Use them while you're sitting at your
desk, at the coffee shop, or even on your phone./p centerimg alt="imgCramberyCard.jpg"
src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/imgCramberyCard.jpg" width="480" height="320" //center pWhat if
you don't want to build flashcards? Cramberry has just announced that they'll begin releasing a a
href="http://cramberry.net/blog/?p=5"library of public cards/a in the not too distant future. Once
available, you'll be able to choose from any number of topics on which you'd like to learn./p
pAgain, a simple service. But sometimes, it's those simple things - like something as simple as
saving your bookmarks to the Web - that provide the most value. If you're having trouble
remembering some important facts, give a href="http://cramberry.net/"Cramberry/a a try. /p stronga
