href=http://www.scholarpedia.org/article/Gestalt_principlesGestalt/a is a set of psychology
principles which describes how the brain perceives visual information in a certain way. There are 6
basic principles: proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, area, and symmetry. Gestalt is one of
the first set of principles taught in an elementary design class. Complex design relies on these
principles in order to ensure visual information is interpreted consistently and efficiently.
Errors applying gestalt often result in usability problems such as the user missing or
misinterpreting information in a page./p pLet#8217;s use KDE#8217;s System Settings UI as an
example in applying gestalt./p pThis is the System Settings UI in KDE 3.5.9. In particular, take
notice of the position of the category label and line/border embellishment./p pa
href=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/systemsettings359.png target=newimg
src=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/systemsettings359.png alt=
title=systemsettings359 width=400 //a/p pNow, this is the System Settings UI in KDE 4.1.3. Look at
the position of the category label and line/border embellishment and compare it to the 3.5.9
design./p pa href=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/systemsettings413.png target=newimg
src=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/systemsettings413.png alt=
title=systemsettings413 width=400 //a/p pDid you notice anything strange? The position of the
line/border embellishment changed in the 4.1.3 design. At first you may not think this slight
change matters, but this single minor change could force users to think harder when interpreting
the visual information in the UI. Instead of immediately making sense, the user is forced to take
an extra second to make sense of grouping and visual hierarchy./p pFor a better view for
comparison, here are the two UI designs side by side, mocked up to remove any distracting and
unnecessary information (left is 3.5.9, right is 4.1.3)./p pa
href=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/ssicons.png target=newimg

height=112 //a/p pThere are two ways you can analyse these UIs, in terms of object zones (area
principle) or groups of objects (closure/proximity principle)./p pHere are the UI designs side by
side, mocked up and abstracted to get a sense of information object #8220;zones#8221; on the
category information level (left is 3.5.9, right is 4.1.3). In the 3.5.9 design, there is a clear
separation of the objects; while in the 4.1.3 design, the reversal of the label and line/border
embellishment create ownership competition and could conceptually make the group zones overlap./p
pa href=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/ssabstract.png target=newimg
src=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/ssabstract-300x112.png alt= title=ssabstract
width=300 height=112 //a/p pHere are the UI designs side by side, mocked up and annotated to show
the perceived groups of objects on the category information level (left is 3.5.9, right is 4.1.3).
In the 3.5.9 design, the bold category label creates an upper boundary and the bottom line/border
embellishment creates a lower boundary, easily creating the sense of an enclosed unit. The border
also acts as a separator between objects. However in the 4.1.3 design, the line/border creates a
separation between category label and its data, forcing the brain to work harder in order to put
the two together and create a single object. Additionally, the lack of a separation between the
category data and the next category label makes the brain work harder in order to separate the two
in to different objects./p pa href=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/ssborder.png
target=newimg src=http://weblog.obso1337.org/wp-content/uploads/ssborder-300x112.png alt=
title=ssborder width=300 height=112 //a/p pI wanted to use this System Settings example to
illustrate how a single, seemingly simple design element can affect the entire design. I hope I
have effectively explained why the 3.5.9 design is the better of the two. The 4.1.3 design forces
the user to think a little harder in order to interpret the organization, instead of doing the work
for them. The issue itself is minor and I really doubt users would mistaken the wrong label for the
group. There are other factors involved in making sense of a UI than only the presentation. The
point is, if we can make the design more efficient, why not?/p

Ex Girlfriend Pictures -

I think one is pretty cute! I wish she were doing some kind of sexy poses while naked, rather
than her slipping into the tub, but I’ll take them! From what I can tell, she appears to
have a great body. You can see that she has a nice figure and I don’t think I need to point
out to anyone what a nice set of tits she’s sporting. But, I guess I just did. So,
I’ll point out her beautiful, erect nipples just begging to be tongued.
James, from South Africa, says he really thought he struck gold when he first hooked-up with his
ex girlfriend. Obviously, she’s easy on the eyes, but she was also an extremely sexual
woman. James introduced here to some new things and she ended up loving it! For one thing,
she’s now a proud, three-input gal. Plus, she’s perpetually horny which meant a lot
of marathon sex. Sounds pretty great to me! However, she loved it so much she began practicing
her new sexual lifestyle with other men, on the side. James wasn’t having that, though, so
he cut her loose for good. Thanks, James!

TechCrunch has a story from last week about a top Belgian politician who apparently got drunk in a
New York City bar on a diplomatic trip to the US. A bartender at the bar wrote about it, noting how
the politician, a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pieter_De_Crem"Pieter De Crem/a had acted in a
way that was embarrassing. Additionally, his aides admitted that they came to NYC despite the fact
that they knew the meetings they had lined up had all been canceled due to a UN meeting in Geneva.
The whole thing got an extra spotlight of attention when a staffer complained to the bar owner, and
the bartender was fired. But what's most interesting is how De Crem responded, a
href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/11/28/when-everyone-is-a-blogger-nothing-you-say-is-off-the-record/"
target="_new"going on a bit of a rampage against bloggers/a: blockquotei I want to take this
opportunity and use this non-event to signal a dangerous phenomenon in our society. We live in a
time where everybody is free to publish whatever he or she wants on blogs at will without taking
any responsibility. This exceeds mud-slinging. Together with you, other Parliament members and the
government I find that it's nearly impossible to defend yourself against this. Everyone of you is a
potential victim. I would like to ask you to take a moment and think about this. /i/blockquote The
thing is, he doesn't seem to dispute any part of the original report. He complains about this idea
that people can publish without responsibility -- but if the problem is idefamation/i, then why not
deny the claims? If the report was itrue/i, then what, exactly, is the problem? The problem isn't
that anyone can publish anything -- it appears to be that De Crem and his entourage didn't do a
very good job hiding their questionable behavior.br /br /a

pApple has loosened their tight turtlenecks abit, offering no-fee Mini DisplayPort licenses to
parties who are interested in designing products around the new specification. It is hoped that
this move will bring the fledgling display connector to mainstream consciousness. After all,
they're pretty confident that most people would need resolutions of up to 2,560 x 1,600 on their
