NIXON TAPES:
RUTHLESS, CYNICAL, PROFANE — From NBC's John Rutherford
— Richard Nixon's reputation takes a fresh pounding every time the National Archives
releases another batch of audio tapes from his presidency, and today's opening of nearly 200
hours of Nixon White House recordings is no exception.

We've written about the Mosquito device a few times in the past. Originally launched back in 2005,
the device emitted a high pitched annoying noise that a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20051129/1011203.shtml"could only be heard/a by those under
25 (or thereabouts). As people get older, we lose the ability to hear noises at higher pitches. So
the device tried to take advantage of this, so that shopkeepers could use the device to ward off
loitering kids. It was pretty obnoxious, though it hardly seemed like a a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080212/190008241.shtml"violation of human rights/a, as
some claimed. If annoying a certain age group with sound is a human rights violation, I'd imagine
playing certain types of music would be seen as a human rights violation. br /br / Of course, some
kids realized that rather than being a violation of their rights, such a noise could be used to
their advantage. Some turned the noise from the Mosquito a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20060612/105232.shtml"into a ringtone/a that their parents
and teachers couldn't hear. br /br / However, the makers of the device have apparently released a
new version of the Mosquito that has an option where the pitch is lowered a bit so that a
href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7759818.stm" target="_new"it can annoy pretty much
everyone/a. You've got to imagine that such a product is not targeted at shop owners and the like
this time around, unless they'd prefer no business whatsoever. It seems that right now the new
version is being used in places like parking garages, where actual customers are quick to leave
anyway, and proprietors are trying to get homeless people to move along. Of course, as with any
such thing, there's apparently a group of folks who are pushing for a
href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7759896.stm" target="_new"legislation to ban the
devices/a. It's difficult to see why such legislation is needed. Eventually, people will realize
that driving people away from a business probably isn't a very good business idea.br /br /a

Oh, woe is Wii. Sure, Nintendo's latest console is printing
money, but it has a little problem on - or, rather, in - its hands: the US Patent
Office has suspended a request by the company to issue a trademark for the "Wii Remote."
GamePolitics reports the application was put on hold due to the fact that "remote" is such a
widely-used term, but the USPTO is willing to compromise. As long as the word "remote" is
always preceeded by the word "Wii" (in all marketing, manuals, etc.) and Nintendo admits
it holds no trademark on the word "remote," the government will reconsider.
Why not just go with "Wiimote," something that we (not Wii) and, well, everyone else have
been calling it from day one? GamePolitics points out that Nintendo did, in fact, try for that one
- only to learn that a Florida company markets a TV remote for children under the name " Weemote." D'oh. Perhaps Nintendo could take this
opportunity to re-brand the controller? Think of the possibilities: the "WaggleWand," the
"GameBaton," the ... "Einhänder!" Oh, wait. Why don't you give it a shot? (And, as
the Superintendent says, "Keep it clean!")
Wee
bit of trouble: Nintendo can't trademark 'Wii Remote' originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 22:00:00 EST. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

official now - Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade units will be equipped with 256MB of internal storage,
which is an infinite improvement over its previous iteration (mathematically speaking, of course),
since its predecessor came with 256MB of external memory. This would mean you are able to save
games and download content the moment you get the Xbox 360 Arcade up and running in your home,
although if you plan on traveling with your precious console, you will still need to purchase a
Memory Unit. Any other goodies for us this Christmas, Microsoft? Congratulations on your console

I almost thought buying a video dock for the iPod Nano 3rd gen was a good idea, until I took a look
at the formats for the movie rentals on itunes. Everything I saw was widescreen.
I have a fullscreen tv with 4:3 aspect ratio and the movies are all formatted in cinematic 2.35:1
or similar. I know that the Nano can "fit" to full screen, but what it appears to do is just zoom
in, cropping the rest of the movie. I know that fullscreen movies are not formatted this way, they
actually include more height.
I'm just saying I would have purchased the video dock and movie rentals if there were fullscreen
movies available on itunes.

i just got a new macbook on black friday, and i absolutely love it. im a switcher and don't think
i'll ever go back to windows (unless im forced to in school)
i'm very paranoid about my mac; to the point of washing my hands before using it.
think about how i felt when i saw that my F keys were slanted!!! omg. it ruined my week. so i dont
know what to do, should i go to the apple store and get it replaced? should i even bother? i expect
my macbook to be absolutely flawless as i am paying $1600 for it.
did anyone else have this problem and what did you do? did you get it replaced or not even
care?
i know that i can fix it with that you tube video but i'd rather have a perfect macbook.

I have an iMac G4 I am upgrading to put in service as a dedicated iTunes server. The main downside
is it is a USB1 version so no good really for syncing iPods with.
I understand the Airport Extreme base station could connect by ethernet to the iMac. This could
give it Wireless N (albeit limited by the iMac's ethernet). If I then add an Iomega Minimax
USB/Firewire hub/hardrive to the USB2 of the Extreme does this give me USB2 sync speeds to the iMac
or is it ultimately limited by the USB1 back in the iMac (which is what I suspect).
Here is the user manual for the Minimax
http://www.iomega.com/support/manual...n.html#minimax
Any thoughts gratefully received
