pWhen news came out that Conde Nast was launching its teen social media site a
href="http://www.Flip.com" title="Flip.com"Flip.com/a, back in 2006, Staci a
href="http://www.paidcontent.org/entry/junior-achievement-meets-conde-nast-new-site-for-ambitious-teen-girls"
title="had a very"had a very/a pertinent question: "Can Conde Nast, which has been so good at
matching demographics with ideas for print, create an online place appealing enough to catch and
keep teen girls attention among so much competition?" Now as it has announced that it is closing
Flip.com, the answer seems to be, unfortunately, no. The site will close down on Dec 16th,
according to a note sent out to users, reported a
href="http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlny/the_state_of_journalism/flipcom_to_close_december_16_102210.asp"
title="by FishbowlNY"by FishbowlNY/a. "If you have any flipbooks that you would like to save before
this date, we suggest you print them. It's easy; go to the flipbook and click on the Print button
just below it." How convinient... /p p Just a few months after the site's beta launch early last
year, the company tied to retool it, and make it more about partnerships and working through other
social networks like MySpace and Facebook. Even that didn't seem to have worked. Part of it has
been its own internal bungling and key employee defection. Then, it didn't have a big traffic
funnel to bring any kind of mass to the social net, and if anything, the key in such an effort is
the network effect. /p p Conde Nast, which some thought to be the perfect magazine machine and
almost immune to a downturn, is having a particularly tough time during these times: it has been
slashing jobs across the board, including at Portfolio and Men's Vogue, as well as its online
division CondeNet. Flip.com was run out of CondeNet, and its budget review finished just late last
month...Flip's closure is likely a result of that review. What else will the company pull the plug
on? Any ideas? And by the way, I stand by a

Domenico Montanaro / MSNBC: NIXON TAPES:
RUTHLESS, CYNICAL, PROFANE — From NBC's John Rutherford
— Richard Nixon's reputation takes a fresh pounding every time the National Archives
releases another batch of audio tapes from his presidency, and today's opening of nearly 200
hours of Nixon White House recordings is no exception.
You might have heard of Doug Engelbart, and you might know him as the inventor of the computer
mouse. But you probably don't know that he is one of the most influential computer visionaries of
all time.
In the 1960s he and his colleagues were playing with concepts and designing systems that today we
take for granted: visual interfaces, spreadsheets, email, and much, much more.
I had the great privilege of interviewing Mr Engelbart more than 3 years ago. I was at an event
at Xerox PARC, a promotion for a book by New York Times journalist John Markoff "What the
Dormouse Said: How the Sixties Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer Industry."
The event featured a lot of early computer pioneers and many of them spoke about how they got
inspired to work on computer design and systems development. Each one spoke about seeing a
seminal demo by Doug Engelbart and how it changed their lives!
Some hadn't been at the demo but heard about it from others, and it still changed their lives! I
was amazed at these stories, amazed that a demo could change people's lives, and amazed at the
man behind the stories.
I didn't realize at the time that Doug Engelbart is still alive and was sitting just behind me.
After the event I was invited to a local restaurant where there were a few dozen people
celebrating the publication of Mr Markoff's book. I was a little late in arriving and most people
were crowded around Mr Markoff's table. Amazingly, the table with Mr Engelbart was half empty. I
couldn't believe my luck and soon was sitting right next to him, and had an amazing conversation.
On Monday and Tuesday there is a celebration of Mr Engelbart's ground breaking "mother of
all demos" at the Program for the Future
Conference
It will feature:
Professor Thomas Malone, Founding Director, MIT Center for
Collective Intelligence
Professor Hiroshi Ishii, Associate Director, MIT Media Laboratory
Peter Norvig, Director of Research, Google
Andries van Dam, Professor, Brown University
Alan Kay, President, Viewpoints Research Institute
Steve Wozniak, co-founder, Apple Computer, Inc.
December 8
- Speakers and Workshops on collective intelligence
at The Tech Museum of Innovation,
201 South Market Street, San José (map).
In keeping with Engelbart's vision of mass collaboration, this event brings together many
communities -- education, business, nonprofit, social, political and technology. The day will end
with a special tour, led by Peter Friess, President of The Tech Museum, through Leonardo: 500 Years into the
Future, the largest exhibition of da Vinci's engineering, anatomical studies and art ever to
visit the United States.
December 9- The morning program at Stanford University's
Wallenberg Hall (map)
is a Call to Action to organize ourselves to move forward to harness the collective intelligence
of our community.
In the afternoon, SRI is celebrating the 40th anniversary of Engelbart's
legendary "mother of all demos" at Stanford's Memorial Auditorium (map).
We hope you will join us for that event as well.

We've written about the Mosquito device a few times in the past. Originally launched back in 2005,
the device emitted a high pitched annoying noise that a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20051129/1011203.shtml"could only be heard/a by those under
25 (or thereabouts). As people get older, we lose the ability to hear noises at higher pitches. So
the device tried to take advantage of this, so that shopkeepers could use the device to ward off
loitering kids. It was pretty obnoxious, though it hardly seemed like a a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080212/190008241.shtml"violation of human rights/a, as
some claimed. If annoying a certain age group with sound is a human rights violation, I'd imagine
playing certain types of music would be seen as a human rights violation. br /br / Of course, some
kids realized that rather than being a violation of their rights, such a noise could be used to
their advantage. Some turned the noise from the Mosquito a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20060612/105232.shtml"into a ringtone/a that their parents
and teachers couldn't hear. br /br / However, the makers of the device have apparently released a
new version of the Mosquito that has an option where the pitch is lowered a bit so that a
href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7759818.stm" target="_new"it can annoy pretty much
everyone/a. You've got to imagine that such a product is not targeted at shop owners and the like
this time around, unless they'd prefer no business whatsoever. It seems that right now the new
version is being used in places like parking garages, where actual customers are quick to leave
anyway, and proprietors are trying to get homeless people to move along. Of course, as with any
such thing, there's apparently a group of folks who are pushing for a
href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/7759896.stm" target="_new"legislation to ban the
devices/a. It's difficult to see why such legislation is needed. Eventually, people will realize
that driving people away from a business probably isn't a very good business idea.br /br /a

Oh, woe is Wii. Sure, Nintendo's latest console is printing
money, but it has a little problem on - or, rather, in - its hands: the US Patent
Office has suspended a request by the company to issue a trademark for the "Wii Remote."
GamePolitics reports the application was put on hold due to the fact that "remote" is such a
widely-used term, but the USPTO is willing to compromise. As long as the word "remote" is
always preceeded by the word "Wii" (in all marketing, manuals, etc.) and Nintendo admits
it holds no trademark on the word "remote," the government will reconsider.
Why not just go with "Wiimote," something that we (not Wii) and, well, everyone else have
been calling it from day one? GamePolitics points out that Nintendo did, in fact, try for that one
- only to learn that a Florida company markets a TV remote for children under the name "Weemote." D'oh. Perhaps Nintendo could take this
opportunity to re-brand the controller? Think of the possibilities: the "WaggleWand," the
"GameBaton," the ... "Einhänder!" Oh, wait. Why don't you give it a shot? (And, as
the Superintendent says, "Keep it clean!")

official now - Microsoft's Xbox 360 Arcade units will be equipped with 256MB of internal storage,
which is an infinite improvement over its previous iteration (mathematically speaking, of course),
since its predecessor came with 256MB of external memory. This would mean you are able to save
games and download content the moment you get the Xbox 360 Arcade up and running in your home,

Last weekend Sara and I started going through our storage and we found three boxes of the
"Wooster Comix #1" that we self published back late 2005.
Looking through the book it's amazing to see early work by such artists as Adam Neate, Judith
Supine, Anthony Lister and many other artists who today, three years later, have become quite
well known.
In the middle of 2005 we invited a group of our favorite artists to try their hand at creating a
series of narratives that featured their characters and street iconography. Most of the artists
had never tried adapting their work into a storyline, so the project became equal parts
challenging, exciting, and - ultimately - extremely creative and rewarding.
The result was Wooster Comix #1, a book that brought together over 35 artists from around the
world including:
Dr. D, Goin, Lobster Roll, Travis Millard, Adam Neate, Bob Krobbauer, Allison Cole, Vinnie Ray,
Mel Kadel, Jon Burgerman, Isoe, Justin Kees, Lennard, The Killer Gerbil, MCA, Diego Bergia, Cody
Hudson, 0190ren, Matthew Rodriguez, Urban Medium, Pash, Zonenkinder, Ryan Browne, TVboy, Tofer,
Rekal, Judith Supine, Numskull, Rafael Badilla, Tihm, Pure Evil, Anthony Lister, Drawwer, Caliper
Boy, Eric Orr, Mike Clark
This evening we put together a video tour of the book with annotations by Sara and I.
We still have 300 books left of the 2000 that we printed back in 2005. They're $10.00 each USD.
Perfect for the holidays.
I almost thought buying a video dock for the iPod Nano 3rd gen was a good idea, until I took a look
at the formats for the movie rentals on itunes. Everything I saw was widescreen.
I have a fullscreen tv with 4:3 aspect ratio and the movies are all formatted in cinematic 2.35:1
or similar. I know that the Nano can "fit" to full screen, but what it appears to do is just zoom
in, cropping the rest of the movie. I know that fullscreen movies are not formatted this way, they
actually include more height.
I'm just saying I would have purchased the video dock and movie rentals if there were fullscreen
movies available on itunes.
I don't want to deal with paypal anymore, and am looking for something that would be a decent
replacement. Anyone know any places like that, or do I need to reopen an account there?
i just got a new macbook on black friday, and i absolutely love it. im a switcher and don't think
i'll ever go back to windows (unless im forced to in school)
i'm very paranoid about my mac; to the point of washing my hands before using it.
think about how i felt when i saw that my F keys were slanted!!! omg. it ruined my week. so i dont
know what to do, should i go to the apple store and get it replaced? should i even bother? i expect
my macbook to be absolutely flawless as i am paying $1600 for it.
did anyone else have this problem and what did you do? did you get it replaced or not even
care?
i know that i can fix it with that you tube video but i'd rather have a perfect macbook.
