 On a normal weekend,
there are usually eight or nine new independent films opening in limited release, compared to three
four wide releases. But for Thanksgiving, those numbers switch sides -- the multiplexes will be
crowded with Twilights and Bolts and Transporters and Christmases and so forth, while the art
houses have only a few new titles arriving.
In other words, there's not much to say in this week's Indie Spotlight,
and there won't be any need for a Spotlight next week at all. So enjoy these few limited-release
films opening today and next Wednesday: The Betrayal, I Can't Think Straight,
Lake City, and Special.
The Betrayal
(Nerakhoon)
What it is: A documentary about a family that emigrated to the U.S. after the
bombings in their native Laos that occurred during the Vietnam War.
What they're saying: Wow -- all 12 reviews at Rotten Tomatoes are positive. "Lyrical, expansive,
unbearably beautiful," etc.
Where it's playing: New York City (IFC Center).
More info: The official website has a list of
release dates, most of which are several weeks hence.
Lake City
What it is: A drama starring Troy Garity as a man who returns to his Southern home
and his mom (Sissy Spacek) after a tragedy separated them for many years.
What they're saying: Lake City is a lovely title, but the critics are saying it's
all wet, or some other water-related metaphor. With 11 notices at Rotten Tomatoes, only one is positive, the rest
indicating that despite Sissy Spacek's good performance, the movie is too serious, contrived, and
banal.
Where it's playing: New York City (Quad Cinema).
More info: I can't find an official site anywhere.

Usually when we're talking about Nokia and patents, a mention of Qualcomm can't be far behind. This
time however, we're looking at something entirely less boring, fascinating even: ultra-sound
sensors that detect hand gestures in the air in front of the device. Now the stretch. Nokia's chief
designer, Alastair Curtis, was asked at a recent cocktail party why Nokia's N-series of multimedia
devices have yet to see a multi-touch interface, Curtis replied, "We've not launched what we think
is right for N-series in a touch product. You'll see in the coming months, years... what we feel is
right." Curtis then elaborated, "Much as I'm talking to you now with gestures." Hmm. Ok Alastair,
if such devices are in the chute, as long as they don't resemble the Palm V-series... we're
cool.
[Thanks, Pdexter]

I've been using a bookmarklet to add my own custom icons to sites when creating webclips for my
home screens. However, with the release of 2.2, those custom icons are now being replaced on the
home screen by the websites default webclip icon. Is anyone else running into this problem?
The bookmarklet I've been using with any problems until today came from this website - http://www.pixelbox.net/2008/01/17/c...one-web-clips/

CIO: "The success of open-source software has been remarkable, forcing even the
largest commercial software vendors such as IBM , Hewlett-Packard , Oracle and Microsoft to

//aiPhone and iPod Touch users can a href="http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/"upgrade
their software to version 2.2 today/a. The update, which weighs in at around 250 megs, adds some
highly-anticipated features. The two biggest for me are Street View in the Maps app and the ability
to download podcasts from the iTunes Store. There are some smaller tweaks that you might
appreciate, as well: that bug that sometimes kept messages from downloading in Mail is fixed, and
you can click the home button when you're on any page of the home screen to go back to the first
page.br /br /Street View on the iPhone is every bit as cool as it sounds. It looks good in
landscape and is really smooth to control. I suspect it won't be long before we start seeing photos
of people holding up iPhone street view pictures of the place they're standing. Less flashy, but
just as useful, walking and transit directions are available in maps now, as well. If you're an
iPod Touch user, you're unfortunately out of luck on Street View for now, so far it's iPhone
only.br /br /Downloading podcasts was at the top of my wishlist for the iPhone (although I know a
lot of you have a href="http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/11/06/please-fix-the-iphone/"lists of
your own/a). It's always frustrating to finish an episode of a good podcast while you're out
walking or on a train, and then wait until you get home to hear the next one. Not a problem
anymore, thanks to the latest iPhone update. All in all, 2.2 offers some excellent new features.
The only thing I have to complain about is the new Safari layout, which feels cramped with the
address bar and the search bar smooshed in next to one another.p

The Touch plays games, music, videos, and has internet WiFi access. Its sleek and the imagery is
crystal-clear. No damage whatsoever, and the touch screen is really cool
Take a look:

------------------double post merged------------------SMS me at 97355927 if interested
I am so desperate to get on with my phone that i will drive to your house and give it to you
This is no scam. I m giving you 77 bucks free, and this does not include my car petrol ;)

Two years ago we covered
JotForm, a Ajax-based web form builder. The folks behind it have been busy in the intervening
time and have now released a more general tool: Memberkit.
Three years in development, Memberkit lets you
use the drag and drop tools to create listing pages, display pages or search forms. You can
create multiple forms and create relationships between them… without writing any code.
While at present Memberkit targets a particular niche, it has ambitious plans.
We have released this first version specifically for membership and
social sites. Our plan is to first make it perfect for these specific
taks before turning it into a complete web framework.
The interface seems quite polished and responsive, and I like the narrow focus. You can check out
a demo of the framework, view a
screenshot tour, or watch a video.
What do you think? Do these VB-for-the-Web frameworks have a shot at any mainstream success?
