It’s been awhile since I put together a list of random stuff I’ve found on
the web and cool tips that have made their way into my inbox. So today I’ll try to make
amends with an extra-long list:
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics is keeping track of all the layoffs.
Why don’t you as well?
- Forbes is offering up its take on the Cogent-Sprint peering fight story I broke a few weeks
ago.
It is worth a read.
- Yahoo
may have sold Kelkoo off for $57 million, much less than the $126 million sale previously
reported. Damn, they spent $600 million buying France-based Kelkoo in 2004.
- Sarah Tavel of Bessemer has some excellent analysis as to how, much in the same way Wal-Mart
and “category killers” like Staples have shuttered mom-and-pop stores, the same is
happening online. Her story,
“The Staples 2.0 Effect,” is one to bookmark.
- Make VoIP calls via Truphone on your iPod Touch. What’s not
to like about this?
- My friend David Isenberg is ready to rock with the 2009 edition of F2C: Freedom to Connect conference in Washington, D.C., in March
2009.
- 3G be damned, the wireless industry is printing money with SMS. About $190 billion in 2008,
according to Portio
Research. That number is going to surge to $330 billion by 2013, they say.
- There were 174 million domain name registrations across all of the Top Level Domain Names
(TLDs) at the end of the third quarter, up three percent over the second quarter and 19 percent
higher than the same quarter last year. More on the VeriSign web site.

The Atlas of True Names contains
maps with very literal place
names.
Called the "Atlas of True Names," the new map traces the etymological roots of European and
global place names and then translates them into English. The "City of Boatmen" is also known as
Paris. Should you travel to the Land of the Fire Keepers, you'd find yourself in Azerbaijan. And
Italy comes from the Latin word vitulus, which means "calf."
New York is "Wild Boar Village", Chicago is "Stink Onion", Great Britain is "Great Land of the
Tattooed", and Grozny is "The Awesome". However, Language Log notes that some of the
translations should be taken with a grain of salt. (thx, andreas)

So when I was in London some buddies and I went into one of the many a
href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/article3720047.ece"all you can
eat/a Chinese restaurants. It was a nice spread too: fish, chicken, steaks all slathered in sauces.
quot;That was great,quot; one of my friends said. quot;Yeah,quot; I responded. quot;And all
vegetarian, too!quot; They were dumbfounded. I was apparently the only one who'd noticed the
quot;Vegetarianquot; sign in the window, and they were all victims of the hoax meat known as a
href="http://www.vrg.org/recipes/vjseitan.htm"Seitan/a. br / The term quot;Seitanquot; was
supposedly coined in the 1960s by a
href="http://www.macrobiotics.org.uk/index.php?getPage=link1b"George Ohsawa, the founder of the
Macrobiotics movement/a. However, the use of a href="http://www.iwga.net/"wheat gluten/a (seitan's
sole ingredient) as a meat substitute has a much longer history. Its use supposedly began in
Buddhist monasteries as a substitute for a
href="http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1402712"duck/a. Today it is popular in both Chinese
and a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/osakajon/133368922/"Japanese/a cuisine. Having made it
from scratch (that is, from whole wheat flour) myself I can tell you that it is not difficult, a
href="http://forkable.blogspot.com/2008/07/courtesy-of-toliveandeatinla.html"just time consuming/a.
It's faster to make it with a
href="http://voluptuousvegans.wordpress.com/2006/11/19/easy-seitan-recipe/"instant gluten/a.br / br
/ This is probably obvious, but seitan is made of 100% wheat gluten, so you strongshould not eat
it/strong if you are a href="http://www.thislife.org/Radio_Episode.aspx?episode=256"Sarah Vowell/a
or anyone else who suffers from a href="http://www.livingwithout.com/"Celiac disease or wheat
allergies/a. (smallYou could try a
href="http://asparagusthin.blogspot.com/2008/11/gluten-free-gluten.html"emgluten-free/em gluten/a
instead).br / br / The name of this post came from one of the a
href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0892561319/metafilter-20"earlier books on quot;Wheat
Meatquot;/a that also taught me how to make seitan the first (and only) time I made it./small

Is it possible to do on a jailbroken ipod firmware 2.2?
I've followed this tutorial
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVOxu...d_touch-2.html
I've tried it many times. Please someone help me out. I downloaded the dump and the app, and I got
pretty far, the wiki logo appears on my springboard, it says, "Embark" Is it suppose to say that.
If I click on it, it just goes back to the springboard. Whats going on. I downloaded the whole
file, I set the permissions just like the video said. I tried turning my ipod touch off and on,
it's jailbroken, 2.2. What does he mean when he says "make sure they are set recursively"? Please
help me out.
Thank you guys so much!

Ok so I sold my MBP and I'm looking at either a MB or MBA rev b. - I sold the MBP bc I didn't need
all the power and wanted more portability and an SSD drive. Now that the MB dropped to 4.5 pounds,
i'm torn. I really want the MBA but I have a couple concerns.
1) did they not solve the heat issue and is it much hotter still even with an SSD then the MB?
2) I hear some complaints about videos (youtube or vidoes from itunes) jumping or freezing. Has
this been resolved? the most intense video software I will use is iMovie. Will this be an issue
with the rev. B?
3) Is 2gigs enough? I don't plan on using fusion but if I do will this be enough. Also, I want this
to last at least 2 years. Can 2gigs survive?
4) any other issues I should be concerned about over the MB?
5) AND do you recommend an SSD air or MB with 4gigs and me upgrading to SSD for my needs? (itunes,
basic use, iMovie, iphoto)
Thank you very much,
NYU02

/br /br /According to several reports, Honda has put its F1 team up for sale and if the automaker
doesn't find a suitor before the start of the season in March, it won't be campaigning in 2009.br
/br /An unnamed source told Reuters that Honda team bosses Ross Brawn and Nick Fry said, "They have
a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team." Autocar reports that a media lunch
was cancelled this week and that a staff meeting at Honda Team HQ in Brackley was called this
evening and an official statement will follow tomorrow morning from Japan.br /br /The reason for
the decision is due to the current economic climate and the cost of developing a competitive car
that abides by the 2009 rules. Finding someone to back the team during these tumultuous times is
going to prove difficult and there's already talk that Bernie Ecclestone may step in to attempt to
work out a deal to keep Honda around.br /br /More information should follow tomorrow. Thanks to all
who tipped in.br /br /[Sources: a

How can the showing of all ATI Control Panel tabs and options be enabled for any ATI/AMD display
adapter?
The Control Panel version I am using for reference is 6.14.10.5173. I may use a different version
if necessary.
From what I can tell, it seems that registry values control option visibility.
