It’s been awhile since I put together a list of random stuff I’ve found on
the web and cool tips that have made their way into my inbox. So today I’ll try to make
amends with an extra-long list:
Forbes is offering up its take on the Cogent-Sprint peering fight story I broke a few weeks
ago.
It is worth a read.
Yahoo
may have sold Kelkoo off for $57 million, much less than the $126 million sale previously
reported. Damn, they spent $600 million buying France-based Kelkoo in 2004.
Sarah Tavel of Bessemer has some excellent analysis as to how, much in the same way Wal-Mart
and “category killers” like Staples have shuttered mom-and-pop stores, the same is
happening online. Her story,
“The Staples 2.0 Effect,” is one to bookmark.
My friend David Isenberg is ready to rock with the 2009 edition of F2C: Freedom to Connect conference in Washington, D.C., in March
2009.
3G be damned, the wireless industry is printing money with SMS. About $190 billion in 2008,
according to Portio
Research. That number is going to surge to $330 billion by 2013, they say.
There were 174 million domain name registrations across all of the Top Level Domain Names
(TLDs) at the end of the third quarter, up three percent over the second quarter and 19 percent
higher than the same quarter last year. More on the VeriSign web site.

I've tried it many times. Please someone help me out. I downloaded the dump and the app, and I got
pretty far, the wiki logo appears on my springboard, it says, "Embark" Is it suppose to say that.
If I click on it, it just goes back to the springboard. Whats going on. I downloaded the whole
file, I set the permissions just like the video said. I tried turning my ipod touch off and on,
it's jailbroken, 2.2. What does he mean when he says "make sure they are set recursively"? Please
help me out.

/br /br /According to several reports, Honda has put its F1 team up for sale and if the automaker
doesn't find a suitor before the start of the season in March, it won't be campaigning in 2009.br
/br /An unnamed source told Reuters that Honda team bosses Ross Brawn and Nick Fry said, "They have
a month to find a buyer, otherwise they are closing the team." Autocar reports that a media lunch
was cancelled this week and that a staff meeting at Honda Team HQ in Brackley was called this
evening and an official statement will follow tomorrow morning from Japan.br /br /The reason for
the decision is due to the current economic climate and the cost of developing a competitive car
that abides by the 2009 rules. Finding someone to back the team during these tumultuous times is
going to prove difficult and there's already talk that Bernie Ecclestone may step in to attempt to
work out a deal to keep Honda around.br /br /More information should follow tomorrow. Thanks to all

Smibs Inc, the Candian
startup behind SmibsNet has launched
the service to the public. The site offers a set of tools that resemble LinkedIn, but are
supposed to be more focused on project and task management than personal connections and resumes.
The public beta will also open the network’s directory up to users who are not members of
Smibs, allowing them to search for members involved in specified professions (much as they would
on LinkedIn).
Besides SmibsNet (which is the social networking side of the site), Smibs will be releasing
applications running on its platform. Currently available is Doorbell, an app similar to Highrise that is
designed to be a sales application for workers who aren’t typically involved in sales (it
essentially allows smaller businesses to complete sales-oriented tasks without a dedicated
staff). The service was originally annouced
in June, and
released a small private beta in October.
CEO Peter Urban has also given us a document that he has forwarded to a number of major VCs in an
attempt to entice them to use the service (you can see it below). Judging from the responses (one
VC replied “I apologize for being dense, but what is that you want?”), it is probably
wise not to mimic this strategy.

So you remember those
rumors a few weeks back that Russell Brand was signing up as
Johnny Depp's 'heir
apparent' in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise? Well, it looks like Brand might be
playing a charming drunk, but it's not going to be as part of the Sparrow clan. The Hollywood
Reporterannounced
that Brand has started putting together a remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore comedy,
Arthur, for Warner Brothers (with an eye of making it a starring vehicle).
The original starred Moore as a boozy playboy who will only inherit his massive fortune on the
condition that he marries an heiress selected by his family. When he falls for Liza Minnelli (in
the form of a working class woman) he turns to his valet (John Gielgud) for help when forced to
choose between money and love.
After making a splash in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Brand started lining up plenty of projects for 2009, including,
Bedtime Stories, Julie Taymor's The Tempest, and Get Him to the Greek
(which reunites him with the Sarah Marshall crew). The timing really could not be better
for Brand to take a little vacation stateside since he seems to be having a tough time in his native land.
When Arthur was first released, the film was a bit hit, and snagged Oscars for Supporting
Actor and original music. But, I would be
willing to guess that a lot of Brand's fans weren't born when the original was released and won't
know the difference. Although, for me, the only true love able drunk on the big screen is Nick Charles..if anyone can make this remake
work, it's Brand.

After seeing how well Psystar did with its Open
Computer, we think we'll just build our own Hackintosh rather than jump into this OpeniMac
we've recently been hepped to. But who knows? Maybe you've been dying to send your hard earned
money down to some shady Argentinean characters. In that case, this 2.53GHz machine should be right
up your alley. Selling for $990 (or $1,330 with an LG 19-inch monitor), the base unit ships with
2GB memory, 320GB storage, and a 256MB ATI Radeon HD PRO. If you've got deep pockets, $1,710 will
get you the OpeniMacPRO, a 3.0GHz machine with a 20-inch widescreen monitor and 4GB RAM. But
seriously -- who knows where the money goes? And who knows whether you'll ever see the machine? One
thing is for certain, however -- this case is as ugly as sin.
