few weeks ago Google updated Gmail to allow users to a
href="http://www.downloadsquad.com/2008/11/19/google-starts-rolling-out-gmail-themes/"choose
colorful themes/a for their email service. The move left some of us wondering when a
href="http://google.com/reader"Google Reader/a was going to get a similar facelift. Apparently
today is the day, but the change isn't exactly what I had expected. br /br /Google has rolled out a
new look for its RSS reader. There's a lot more white space, and a lot less blue. But there's no
way to customize the color scheme. br /br /Probably the best part of the new design is that you can
collapse different sections in your sidebar to save space. Don't care what items your friends have
shared? Just select the "hide unread counts" button. Hate the fact that every time you log into
your account you're greeted with a reminder that you have over 1000 unread items to catch up on?
You can collapse that section too. br /br /I happened to have Google Reader open when the
changeover occurred, so I was able to grab the screenshot above showing the old new design on the
left and the old Google Reader interface on the left. Honestly, found the old version familiar and
comforting like a favorite blanket. But I'm sure I'll get used to the new version soon. Getting rid
of that 1000+ unread item count will certainly help.br /br /emthanks a

pAs expected, studios and producers aren't backing down in the face of strike threats from the
actors' guild. The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers reiterated that their final
offer of June 30 still stands and are urging the Screen Actors Guild to reverse course and throw
its support behind the proposed contract. It's the latest development in a high-stakes game of
cat-and-mouse that's placed yet another gray cloud over the entertainment industry. In a a
href="http://www.amptp.org/" title="release this afternoon"release this afternoon/a, AMPTP wrote:
"it offers more gains for SAG members than any other labor agreement in the guild's history. On the
economic side alone, the offer is the richest ever by historical standards... These are clearly
revolutionary times, and the final offer reflects that as well." /p p AMPTP also publicized the a

reflects an increase in minimums by 3.5 percent in the first and third years and 3 percent in the
second year. Pension and health rates would increase from 14.5 percent to 15 percent. Guest star
premiums would jump from 7.5 percent to 10 percent. The number of background actors covered would
increase in TV from 19 to 20 and from 50 to 52 in film. /p p bNew media terms:/b Much to SAG's
chagrin; the deal includes an exception to jurisdiction in most cases that involve original content
made for online or mobile. Actors would not gain consent rights or compensation for clips used in
new media. The proposal does include first-ever residuals for ad-supported streaming of films, TV
and new media programs and increases the residual rate for permanent downloads. br / /p

high marks for the making aQuantive fit fairly nicely into Microsoft's different culture and
structure. Clearly, the choice of Qi Lu over McAndrews means he lost the battle to replace Johnson.
Despite his good work, in many ways, McAndrews was considered a longshot. The Microsoft purchase
made him very rich, and therefore unlikely to want to work for someone
else—especially someone like the hard-to-please Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
McAndrews isn't going anywhere at the moment and will take the next few months to "transition out"
of his job. So while he ponders his next move, he would be an interesting—and
ironic—candidate for Yahoo's open CEO role. a

It’s been awhile since I put together a list of random stuff I’ve found on
the web and cool tips that have made their way into my inbox. So today I’ll try to make
amends with an extra-long list:
- The Bureau of Labor Statistics is keeping track of all the layoffs.
Why don’t you as well?
- Forbes is offering up its take on the Cogent-Sprint peering fight story I broke a few weeks
ago.
It is worth a read.
- Yahoo
may have sold Kelkoo off for $57 million, much less than the $126 million sale previously
reported. Damn, they spent $600 million buying France-based Kelkoo in 2004.
- Sarah Tavel of Bessemer has some excellent analysis as to how, much in the same way Wal-Mart
and “category killers” like Staples have shuttered mom-and-pop stores, the same is
happening online. Her story,
“The Staples 2.0 Effect,” is one to bookmark.
- Make VoIP calls via Truphone on your iPod Touch. What’s not
to like about this?
- My friend David Isenberg is ready to rock with the 2009 edition of F2C: Freedom to Connect conference in Washington, D.C., in March
2009.
- 3G be damned, the wireless industry is printing money with SMS. About $190 billion in 2008,
according to Portio
Research. That number is going to surge to $330 billion by 2013, they say.
- There were 174 million domain name registrations across all of the Top Level Domain Names
(TLDs) at the end of the third quarter, up three percent over the second quarter and 19 percent
higher than the same quarter last year. More on the VeriSign web site.

The Atlas of True Names contains
maps with very literal place
names.
Called the "Atlas of True Names," the new map traces the etymological roots of European and
global place names and then translates them into English. The "City of Boatmen" is also known as
Paris. Should you travel to the Land of the Fire Keepers, you'd find yourself in Azerbaijan. And
Italy comes from the Latin word vitulus, which means "calf."
New York is "Wild Boar Village", Chicago is "Stink Onion", Great Britain is "Great Land of the
Tattooed", and Grozny is "The Awesome". However, Language Log notes that some of the
translations should be taken with a grain of salt. (thx, andreas)
