NCsoft's Carbine Studios announced today that a

href="http://www.joystiq.com/tag/fallout-2"emFallout 2/em/a producer and designer Tim Cain has been
named design director for the company's unannounced project. Carbine has pretty much been off the
radar since last year when a

studio was first announced/a and Tim Cain had the title of programmer director.br /br /We're not
that well versed in nit-picky game designer titles, so we actually asked Tim Cain what his new
title means. Cain writes us: "As the programming director, I was responsible for trying to realize
the ideas of the design director. I would take his requests for features and system specifications
and coordinate my team of programmers to create those features and systems. If game development was
a train, I was shoveling the coal into the engine to keep it chugging along. Now as the design
director, I am the conductor of the train. I get to decide where we go and where we stop."br /br
/Now we patiently wait on a name for this secret project that's apparently been in development
since the studio's inception in 2005.p style="clear: both; padding: 8px 0 0 0; height: 2px;

 Sports. Aside from
being a Huey Lewis and the News album, it's a slice of life that has lived for a long time in
contradiction. On the one hand, there's the cud-chewing, testosterone-laden toughness of actual
sporting events. On the other, there's the ever-rampant tears pouring out of sports dramas and
biopics -- and now we're getting one more ...
But unlike pics that raise you up to a teary conclusion, this new feature looks like it will be a
heart-tugger from the get-go.
The Hollywood Reporter posts that Ryan Merriman and Aidan Quinn have signed on, with
Andie MacDowell in
final negotiations, for a new sports drama called The 5th Quarter. Based on a true story,
the film centers on the way a young man deals with his brother's death. Basically, after
15-year-old Luke Abbate died in a car crash, his organs were donated to five people. In the wake of
this tragedy, his brother (Merriman) got his football jersey changed to his brother's number (5)
and then held up five fingers before the fourth quarter of each game, while his parents (Quinn and
MacDowell) sat in section 5. See? Tear jerker -- one that might even require more than five
tissues.
5th Quarter will also be a film that blends real life with fiction, not in the script, but
in the cast and scenes -- the family's pastor is playing himself in the film, and real footage of
the games will be edited into the film. Whether this will help or distract from the final product
remains to be seen. Production begins this month.

alt="" //abr //strong/p pEveryone's surprised as the FIA has announced it is canceling the Canadian
Grand Prix. Those in the world of F1 racing have come to know the event as a staple of the F1
calendar. Racing fans in Montreal, this writer's home town that has hosted the race for the past
three decades, are shocked to lose the event. And that includes the race organizers, who apparently
learned of the news the same way the rest of us have./p pThe cancellation of the race leaves a
month-long gap in the race calendar in August of next season, and with the U.S. Grand Prix off the
schedule the past few years, means F1 will stay completely out of North America. And save for the
Brazilian Grand Prix, out of the Western Hemisphere altogether. But the trip across the Atlantic
for the one race cost the teams dearly, and the sport's organizers have been on a crusade to cut
costs. No doubt the officials at le Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will be burning up the phone lines to
Formula One Management and the FIA, and organizers in far-flung Rio de Janeiro and Melbourne will
be waiting for the proverbial other shoe to drop. emThanks to everyone who sent in the tip./em/p

Media Matters for America -

During the October 6 broadcast of The War Room with Quinn & Rose, co-host Rose
Tennent twice stated that "I don't think you can be a Christian and vote for [Sen.] Barack
Obama." Tennent later said: "I don't care what kind of Christian he is -- I'm talking about
Christians, voters. If you can't take a look his record, his track record, and listen to the
words he's saying, and, and you can still vote for him. -- I'm curious, I'm just very curious. I
don't understand it."
During the program, Tennent and co-host Jim Quinn also referenced comments Obama made on ABC's
This Week with George Stephanopoulos to again falsely suggest that Obama is not a
Christian. Tennent stated, "[W]hen he's not being reminded that he's a Christian, he's saying
he's a Muslim, but that's OK." Quinn responded: "Yeah, oh yeah, 'my Muslim faith.' "
On the September 7 edition of This Week, Obama discussed, in host George Stephanopoulos'
words, Republicans who have "suggested" he had "Muslim connections "and claimed that such
suggestions are "promulgated on Fox News, let's say, and Republican commentators, who are closely
allied" with Sen. John McCain's campaign. After Stephanopoulos asserted that McCain "said that's
wrong" to question Obama's faith, Obama replied: "[Y]ou're absolutely right that John McCain has
not talked about my Muslim faith." Stephanopoulos interjected, "Your Christian faith," to which
Obama replied: "My Christian faith. Well, what I'm saying is he hasn't suggested that I'm a
Muslim. And I think that his campaign, upper echelons have not either. What I think is fair to
say is that coming out of the Republican camp, there have been efforts to suggest that perhaps
I'm not who I say I am when it comes to my faith, something which I find deeply offensive. And
that has been going on for a pretty long time."
As Media Matters for America has documented, both Quinn and Tennent, along with
numerous other conservative radio hosts, seized on Obama's comment in order to suggest that the
comments prove Obama is really a Muslim, not a Christian.
From the October 6 edition of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose:
TENNENT: You know, the other thing I don't understand is, like when we were talking earlier about
where these contributions are coming from, why isn't the federal government looking into this?
Why is this guy getting a free pass on everything? I can't even look at him anymore. I mean, it's
on my screen right now. I gotta -- I can't take it. Now, I'm gonna tell you something else, too.
A couple of times now, I've run into people who are voting -- who are Christians, and they're
voting for Barack Obama. I'm going to say this. I don't think you can be a Christian and vote for
Barack Obama. OK?
QUINN: Well, Barack Obama --
TENNENT: I'm just saying. Now, I'm going to get emails from people --
QUINN: You know -- oh, I don't know --
TENNENT: I don't give a rip what you said to me in the email. OK? I'm not even going to answer
your email. I don't think you can be a Christian and vote for Barack Obama.
QUINN: Yeah, I'm sorry if the truth is politically incorrect. But Obama claims he's a Christian.
Muammar Qaddafi --
TENNENT: But you know what? He's being remind -- when he's not being reminded that he's a
Christian, he's saying he's a Muslim, but that's OK --
QUINN: Yeah, oh yeah, "my Muslim faith." Uh --
TENNENT: You mean "your Christian" --
QUINN: Right, right, yeah. I mean, here's a guy who was in Quranic studies class in a -- in a --
in an Islamic school. Here's a guy whose -- who Muammar Qaddafi says is a Muslim. The mullahs in
Iran think he's a Muslim. So he must be part of the vast right-wing conspiracy, I suppose.
TENNENT: And abortion alone. And, you know, and that child protection act. All of that -- I mean,
that is dirty, that is evil. I'm sorry, it is evil.
QUINN: Well, and the other thing, too, is that Christianity that he --
TENNENT: Well, I'm not even here to --
QUINN: -- adheres to --
TENNENT: -- judge his religion.
QUINN: -- is black -- well, I am. It's Black Liberation Theology that's a conveyor belt for
Marxism. It's not Christianity, it's Christianity turned into politics.
TENNENT: Right.
QUINN: So don't give me this thing about how much of a Christian you are.
TENNENT: I don't care what kind of Christian he is -- I'm talking about Christians, voters. If
you can't take a look his record, his track record, and listen to the words he's saying, and, and
you can still vote for him. -- I'm curious, I'm just very curious. I don't understand it.
QUINN: Well, I do. It's, it's the culture of narcissism. These people want reality to be what
pleases them. And they will convert anything around them, including their own morality and the
morality of their church to suit what it is they want. Because what they want is everything. I
want, I want, I want.

width="180" height="135" /a href="http://www.veoh.com/" title="Veoh"Veoh/a founder Dmitry Shapiro
climbed on stage at a small theater in Manhattan to introduce a discussion on the changes online
video has been experiencing. For its mini-conference, the iVeoh Insights Series: Watching The

href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=DIS" class="ticker"
title="DIS"NYSE: DIS/a) CEO and, more recently, founder of The Tornante Company and backer of
Vuguru and Veoh, and iAdAge's/i Brian Steinberg. /p p -- bWhat do people want to see/b: Are we
talking about all video? bSex seems to work. User-gen, sports, news, anything with Sarah Palin
works/b. At the end of the day, like in all the other industries from movies to TV, long-form,
story-driven content is what ultimately works. But it's still in the experimental stage. At ABC, we
started America's Funniest Home Video—so this isn't the first era to watch a
man get hit in the groin with a bat. bMost of the studio video is repurposed, like Hulu. It makes
NBC and News Corp (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=NWS"
class="ticker" title="NWS"NYSE: NWS/a) feel like they're doing something—I'm
not sure it's the right thing, but they're doing it well./b /p p -- bDefining quality/b: Lasting
quality starts with script. But it depends on the medium. South Park's a radio show, basically. Big
superhero movies like iBatman/i and iIron Man/i work great on the big screen. Would it translate to
the computer screen? Maybe it would would. You can create videos that look like they have
production values that are comparable to those big studio projects. /p p -- bThe good old days/b:
When I was a kid on 89th St., the RKO Theater near me had on their marquee, "Don't watch TV." But
eventually, the media companies got together and TV and movies coexisted. The same when cable came
into being. TV and cable started repurposing content, particularly movies and old radio shows.
Then, they began to form distinct identities and created their own individual content. /p p --
bLead the advertisers/b: MySpace could dominate video if they figured out how to do it. Part of
figuring it out involves attracting the advertisers. It's easy to get advertisers to move over from
TV to Hulu. But for original content, that remains the challenge. But it will come. You can't let
the advertisers lead you, it has to be the other way around. But I don't think that's going to
happen. When we passed on iAll In The Family/i, I thought, so what, there's only three
networks—where are they going to go? That didn't go over well. iMore after the
jump/i /pp-- bHold off on 30-sec pre-roll/b: I can't stand 15-second overlays, but 30 seconds is
too much to stand. Product placement is fine, as long as it's entertaining and doesn't disrupt too
much. The 30-second post-roll is dead too—it's like watching the credits. No
one will stay around for that. Targeting is key. Appointment TV is gone. Targeted audience are here
to stay. If you can make an interactive commercial, that would be the way to go. It wouldn't be
annoying and you'd get the people who are interested. /p p -- bExclusivity (and back to Palin)/b:
Mass audiences are still possible, even on the internet. If I were at ABC, I'd sign up Palin and
put her on a show the day after she loses the election. With that wink, she can go a long way. You
could put it on Veoh. Why would it not be bigger than on ABC or NBC? It would be on instantly all
around the world and if you put it on for just one week and then it was gone—it
would be big. When that happens, and you get 200 million people in one week, there will be an
exodus from the networks on onto Veoh and Break and others. And the cat on a skateboard? That would
just be a small part of it. /p p -- bOne more thing about Palin/b: The most interesting thing to me
about the Katie Couric video, was not the interview, but the comments on it. And some people
thought she did fantastic! That's really interesting. Anyway, those comments can be
commercialized.nbsp; /p piA Complimentary Webinar from Innodata Isogen--bBeyond Cost Arbitrage:

hspace="10"/So on Monday, I sent an RFP out to half a dozen e-mail service providers. By Tuesday,
all but one had gotten back to me. By phone./p pOf these five, only one vendor left their personal
e-mail contact information. Now, I don't know about you, but in my book, phone tag is about the
most inefficient communications method out there. None of the candidates' messages indicated when
they could be reached via vox. And I've called every single one of them back and spoken
with...their voicemail systems./p pIs this an overly grumpy reaction to what you've got to admit is
a pretty old skool communications method? (I've never claimed to be a phone person.) But you really
would think ESP sales departments might avail themselves from time to time of the channel they are,
after all, selling: e-mail./p pbr / /pimg src="http://feeds.clickz.com/~r/clickzblog/~4/414118295"

alt="Emerge" //abr //div Tired of staring at a cluttered Windows desktop filled with program icons,
documents, and other shortcuts? There are two solutions: Give your desktop a thorough cleaning, or
sweep everything under the rug. a href="http://emergedesktop.org/"Emerge Desktop /ahelps you do the
latter.br /br /In a nutshell, what Emerge Desktop does is replace the Windows shell. That means no
more start menu, taskbar, or system tray. Those items are replaced with a clean, blank desktop. The
only thing you'll notice running after installing Emerge Desktop is a replacement for the Windows
system tray called emergeTray. br /br /So how do you launch programs? In a very Linux-like fashion,
you simply right-click on your desktop. A menu will pop up allowing you to find programs that are
in your start menu, quick launch bar, or files and shortcuts that were hanging out on your
Desktop.br /br /If you already use a program launcher like a
href="http://emergedesktop.org/"RocketDock/a or a href="http://www.launchy.net"Launchy/a, Emerge
can help you effectively hide everything on your desktop while still providing a system tray. It
did take me a few minutes to figure out how to change the transparency level for emergeTray or how
to move it. The answer? Hold the Ctrl key while right clicking on it to bring up the edit or
configure menus.br /br /[via a
