“Dès que nos instances auront validé le résultat [du] vote,
(…) je veux dire à tous très simplement que je serai le premier
secrétaire de tous les militants du parti socialiste car aucun militant ne doit manquer au
parti” a déclaré Martine Aubry à l’issue du second tour qui
la place en tête de l’élection du premier secrétaire du PS avec 42 voix
d’avance. (et là j’apprends qu’on ne féminise pas “premier
secrétaire” ?)

Los Angeles based indie-jazz/math-rock (though subtly defiant of both terms)band Charts and Maps
have released a 4 song EP, titled Enemies of C.Frias. Working with engineer/producer Chris Schlarb
(whose solo projects and free-jazz duo I Heart Lung are released through Sufjan Steven's Asthmatic
Kitty records), the band have managed to further hone their sound while losing none of the
adventurous flair of their previous releases. Characterized by unrestrained song structure, a keen
ear for new aesthetic, and an unabashed ability to throw a looping curveball in the form of a key
change or time signature switch, Charts and Maps still make music for people who understand music,
but have developed upon their ability to blend the aforementioned with catchy and grooving hooks.
Their music is intrinsically unclassifiable, roving between genres, tied together by stylistic
nuances--categorized by their uncategorizability (yeah, it's a word, apparently), as much as
anything else. Instead of losing themselves in heady concept, as many bands with this kind
introduction do, Charts and Maps are unequivocally listenable and sonically pleasant. Take a listen
for yourself.

After two years, we welcome the return of Part Rocket with their third release 'In Limine',
following on from their 'Kneel Before the Throne and Drink the Blood of your Own' EP, also
available on Lost Children, and the 'Good Bye Morning Satellite' EP available at
www.partrocket.com. Continuing along the leftfield-path-less-trod, Part Rocket's instrumental music
takes influence from the tight and rhythmic structures of math rock and incorporates the delicacy,
emotion and melody of latter day post-rock overlaying varying ideas and dynamics to produce another
unique alternative release.

Recorded in the Summer of 2008, 'ERS-3' is the third EP from the French outfit following both
previous releases on Lost Children and again contains quality guitar-driven instrumental post-rock
whilst expanding upon the formula with the use of keyboards, electronics and the clarinet. 'ERS-3'
is a nice progression from the earlier releases whilst remaining resolutely Stellardrive, this time
the instruments are given more space to breath and grow, mixing in their trademark driving riffs
with delicate interplay and allowing the less conventional instruments to shine through more
reflective moments. This, in addition to the perfect production, makes ERS-3 a stunning EP release.

 Oy vey: after
shifting more dates than an old lady working in the produce section, it appears that Richard
Kelly's thriller The Box has been
bumped once more, from next March to next November. Usually, this would be a bad thing, but I'm
still seriously intrigued by this adaptation of Richard Matheson's short story, in which a young
couple (James Marsden and Cameron Diaz) are given a mysterious box that can make them wealthy, but
at the cost of killing a stranger the moment they use it.
The film is completed enough to merit a PG-13 from our pals over at the MPAA (for "thematic
elements, some violence and disturbing images"), so it's not post-production woes holding the film
up. One suspects this is a much less sprawling film than his Southland Tales, which we'll come back to soon enough.
Is it part of WB's strategy to spread out product as the strike catches up to them, as they had by
moving Harry Potter from this week to next summer?
Man, if I could just kill a stranger to get some answers...

height="347" style="display:block;" /The tech we see above ground in New York City is a
href="http://gizmodo.com/5096475/the-insane-hardware-driving-the-worlds-biggest-led-billboard"undeniably
cool/a, but underground, where the wild things are, things are not going so smoothly. A giant
aquifer, completed in 1944, is leaking up to 36 million gallons of water a day. For New Yorkers,
who on average use 150 gallons per day, that's unacceptable. Trouble is, fixing the leak involves
some extreme diving, 14 tractor trailer trucks worth of gear, and a 24-foot room that divers will
live in for a month, breathing helium./p pThe five-year, $22 million diving project is underway
today, and that means six lucky divers are presently 700 feet beneath the NYC surface, trying to
find where one of the bigger leaks is hiding. They're living in a 24-foot pressurized tube that
includes "showers, a television and a Nerf basketball hoop," and they're breathing air that is
97.5% helium and 2.5% oxygen./p pWhy helium? Well, since these lucky ducks will be in a pressurized
environment for an extended period of time, they need to employ what's known as a
href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturation_diving""saturation diving."/a Long story short, this
technique allows the divers to go 700 feet down, and return to their living quarters without having
to worry about repeated decompression sessions. In fact, the only times they have to worry about
pressure is when they first step into the tube, and when they exit it a month later./p pimg
src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/11/23tunnel.1-500.jpg" width="457"
height="500" style="display:block;" /When the divers aren't squeaking at one another in
helium-speak, three of them use a diving bell to go 70 stories down, where they do things like
strip out 4,000-lb. bronze pipe fittings. Their twelve hour shifts are divided up into four-hour
demolition sessions, one per diver, where they each take a turn breaking concrete to get at a
malfunctioning valve array. After four hours, the divers "rest" for eight hours in the murky water,
before returning the the cylinder./p pWhen they're on break, the divers can have whatever meals
they like, although helium tends to dull human taste buds. Tabasco sauce is their best friend,
apparently, along with jalapenos and salsa./p p“They lose a lot of weight because
they’re burning so many calories,” said Robert Onesti, who is running the water rescue
project via Global Diving. “It’s not for everybody. It’s heavy construction work,
and it’s deep.”/p pAnd when the month is up, the divers will have another week in the
tube to adjust to life without helium in their lungs. [New York Times, emthanks Andy!/em]/p br
