aux divers making-of.

Paul Krugman:
Worries
about next year — I've been ruminating over economic prospects for
next year, and I'm getting scared. — Two points: — 1. The
economy is falling fast. We'll see what tomorrow's employment report says, but we could
well be losing jobs at a rate of 450,000 or 500,000 a month.

eBuddy, the instant
messenger startup that we’ve likened
to a European meebo (though eBuddy has
been around for much longer), has released the latest figures for its mobile instant messaging
client, and it looks like business is booming.
Since July, the mobile J2ME eBuddy client has been downloaded over 5 million times, and has seen
10 million total downloads since launching in summer 2007 (current download rates are pegged at
around 1 million per month. The company reports 1.5 billion message exchanges monthly across an
average of 3 million users. On application repository GetJar, the application
is the top most downloaded app, ahead of notables like Google Maps. The application’s reach
is also global, with availability in 195 countries and 37 languages.
While smartphones like iPhones and Blackberries may get most of the attention, the vast majority
of mobile phone users are using more basic phones which support applications on the J2ME
platform. eBuddy’s explosive growth is a testament to the size of this market, as well as
the increasing trend towards using third party applications and data plans on mobile phones, even
those that aren’t as advanced as smartphones.

Well, we heard that the Vivienne Tam-designed Mini 1000 was
coming in December, and here it is, available to order on HP's site. The custom 10-inch netbook
is, as expected, sporting a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom with 1GB of RAM, plus an up to 60GB hard drive -- a
little smaller than the 80GB we initially heard about. The fashion-conscious laptop is less than an
inch thick and has a starting weight of 2.45 pounds, and though it's not exactly an example of
"understated elegance," those who want to start (loudly) classing up their act can do just that for
a starting price of $699.
[Thanks, Matt]

It's an expectedly cryptic announcement, but it looks like the whimsical folks at Violet have finally seen fit to offer a follow-up to their
original and less-than-affordable dal
internet-connected lamp, with the all new dal:dal lamp apparently on track for a release early
next year. As before, the lamp will change colors to relay different information, or, as Violet
puts it, convert the "world's ebb & flow and endless stream of events into halos of living
colours and audio micro-messages." No exact release date just yet but, according to GeekLifeBlog,
it'll set you back €59, or about $75.

Before you get your panties in a bunch, our sources have confirmed some of Shock's story,
which reported that Rob Zombie will be directing Halloween II for Dimension Films. While
it's being reported that it's set in stone, we've been told that there are some heated talks
ongoing, leaving everything up in the air. The new Laurie Strode, Scout Taylor-Compton, thinks she
has a better handle on the rumors as she tells Sequel-Buzz, " Where did you hear that from?...
Oh, I'm so sick of this. People need to stop believing what they read on Internet. I'm somewhat
close with Rob and believe me, if there was any truth to this...I'd know." The question is,
would she really know? I'm going to go with no... chime in on your thoughts below.
