of the largest 3D displays in the world, relying on LEDs as pixels for the first time in human
history. This 180" behemoth has a screen width of 3.84m, and according to NewSight, they are able
to combine all four displays to turn this into a 360" 3D monster. There is no word on pricing, but
you can expect to fork out a handsome amount for it, as the final figure will depend on what your
individual order is like. The LEDs themselves are made in China and arranged at a pitch of 6mm in
order to function just like pixels located on an LCD panel. The optimal viewing range would be from
5 meters away, although that can be adjusted. Each LED comes with a warranty period of 20,000
hours, and you can opt for LEDs manufactured by other people if that is your cup of tea. No doubt
advertisers are rubbing their hands in glee with this new avenue to market their products./p

A qui appartiennent les données publiques ? Et comment faire pour les réexploiter
dès lors qu’il est interdit de s’en resservir sur des plateformes commerciales ?
La question s’est crûment posée, ces dernières semaines, à
l’occasion d’un concours lancé en Grande-Bretagne, lorsque l’on s’en
aperçu que les gagnants n’avaient pas le droit de réutiliser les données que
le gouvernement leur avait proposé de réutiliser, et donc de mettre en oeuvre les
projets pour lesquels ils avaient été primés.
Souvenez-vous,
en 2006, le quotidien britannique The Guardian lançait une campagne,
Rendez-nous les joyaux de la Couronne, et un site dédié, Free
Our Data, pour que les données publiques puissent être utilisées par les
contribuables qui les ont, in fine, payées.
En réponse, le gouvernement mettait en place une commission, la
Power of Information Taskforce, pour améliorer le partage des données, et leurs
exploitations. En 2008, il lançait également un concours, Show
Us A Better Way (Montrez-nous une meilleure voie) pour récompenser les meilleurs projets
de réutilisation des données publiques, comme
nous vous l’expliquions en septembre. .
Les organisateurs avaient pris,
comme exemples, FixMyStreet,
un service proposant aux internautes de rapporter les incivilités, dégâts,
graffitis et autres problèmes à l’échelle locale, Rate your
prison, qui permet aux familles et proches de détenus d’évaluer
l’état des prisons britanniques, FarmSubsidy,
qui tente de répertorier la répartition des subventions agricoles européennes,
ainsi qu’un outil de cartographie de la criminalité (voir
cette présentation).
Les cinq projets
récompensés (sur plus de
450 postulants) n’ont finalement rien à voir avec cette fibre sécuritaire ou
de sousveillance, préférant tenter de repondre à des problèmes plus
prosaïques.
Le premier prix
revient ainsi à un
projet de site web proposant de répertorier, à partir de son code postal, ce que
les autorités du cru proposent de recycler, ou pas, comment, et qui contacter pour cela (les
collectivités locales britanniques n’ont pas toutes les mêmes capacités et
offres de recyclage).
Les organisateurs ont par ailleurs décidé d’aider au développement
d’une interface de programmation (API) répertoriant les
travaux routiers, les
ressources juridiques libres, les projets financés par l’argent public (Where
does my money go ?), les services ciblant les “baby-boomers” (Oldienet),
les écoles
ou encore les
épaves se trouvant sur les côtes britanniques.
Quand l’administration parodie les Monty Python
Le Guardian
souligne cela dit que ces projets se confronteront à un obstacle de taille : les
données issues d’Ordnance
Survey, l’agence de cartographie britannique, ne peuvent en effet être
utilisées avec des services tels que Google Maps, pour cause de respect des licences
légales…
Les
conditions d’utilisation d’OpenSpace, l’API qu’elle a rendue publique
en phase beta, précisent ainsi qu’il est interdit d’afficher des Google Ads sur
ses données, ainsi que de créer des widgets pour Facebook, MySpace et autres sites
sociaux commerciaux.
