/Personalized recommendations have always been one of those technologies that look great on paper,
but hardly ever work quite as well as advertised. This week, we got a chance to test a
href="http://www.my6sense.com/"my6sense/a, which takes your feed subscriptions and then recommends
interesting posts based on your own reading habits. My6sense's current focus is on providing a good
mobile experience, though the company will soon also launch its service on the web as well./p
pWhile it did take a bit of training before the application fully recognized our preferences and
before it returned really good results, the overall results were very impressive./p p
align="right"emSponsor/embr /a href='http://d.openx.org/ck.php?n=12820amp;cb=12820'
target='_blank'img src='http://d.openx.org/avw.php?zoneid=861amp;cb=12820amp;n=12820' border='0'
alt='' align="right" //a/p h2Features/h2 pSo how does it work? When you first sign up, my6sense can
import your RSS feeds (from Google Reader, Netvibes, MyYahoo, or from a standard OPML file). After
that, all you have to do is read your feeds through the web app and my6sense will automatically
learn from your reading behavior (my6sense calls this "digital intuition"). You can also explicitly
give a 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' on any post./p pimg alt="my6sense_sshot.png" align="right"
src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/my6sense_sshot.png" /My6sense is also a very capable RSS
reader in its own right, with the built-in ability to share items on Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed,
and LinkedIn, as well as by email. One very nice feature of the app is that it also allows you to
see comments on posts from supported blogging platforms./p pCurrently, my6sense is only available
as a web app, but the company expects to have a native iPhone application in the App Store by the
time the service launches its public beta early next year./p h2Training/h2 pOn a mobile device,
good recommendations can be quite a time saver. Having to scroll through numerous feeds can quickly
become frustratingly slow. In our tests, it took a day or two of regular usage before my6sense
started to come back with really good recommendations. As Kristie Wells, my6sense's VP of Marketing
and Community Relations told us, the company is working on providing a better out-of-the-box
experience that will learn faster, but given our positive experience, training the software off and
on for a day or two is well worth it./p h2Attention/h2 pimg alt="my6sense_sshot_item.png"
align="right" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/my6sense_sshot_item.png" /We also talked to
the two co-founders of my6sense, Barak Hachamov and Avinoam Rubinstainem,/em earlier last month and
we asked them if they were going to support any of the open attention profiles like the a
href="http://www.apml.org/"APML/a, which would make it possible for users to take their attention
profile and transfer it to other news readers. For now, however, the company says that it is
focused on providing a good user experience for its alpha testers, though they didn't rule out
support for the APML in the future./p h2Invites/h2 pOur experience with my6sense has been very
positive, but you don't have to take our word for it. While the service is still in private alpha,
they have provided us with 500 invites for our readers. Just a
href="http://www.my6sense.com/rww"click here to claim yours/a and let us know if it worked as well
for you as it did for us./p stronga

400 Screens, 400 Blows is a weekly column that takes an in-depth look at the films playing
below the radar, beneath the top ten, and on 400 screens or less.
Filmmaker Jean Renoir, the son of painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, is inarguably one of
the great cinematic poets. He established a fluid, almost unobtrusive style that allowed him to
burrow directly into the souls of his characters. In his most acclaimed film, The Rules of the Game (1939), he appears as a
kind of buffoonish party guest, and speaks a line of dialogue that has come to be associated with
the real-life filmmaker and all his films: "Everyone has his reasons."
Just this week I caught up with Philippe Claudel's directorial debut I've Loved You So
Long (52 screens), which some critics have compared to Jonathan Demme's Rachel Getting
Married (216 screens). Both films feature contenders for Best Actress, both try to
concentrate on human emotions and behavior rather than a forward-thrusting plot, and at least one
film has been compared to Renoir. However, one film succeeds and the other fails, and it comes
down to the issue of trust. One filmmaker steps back and lets his characters evolve within the
film, and the other constructs the characters as specific types to drive the story (he tells
rather than shows).

vspace="2" width="800" height="531" style="display:block;float:none;" /strongThe Gadget/strong:
iHome's iP47 speakerphone has an unbelievable amount of integrated functions, like A2DP stereo
Bluetooth connectivity, iPhone/iPod docking, GSM interference shielding, iPod alarm clock playback,
AM/FM radio and on-board dialing direct from the unit. And, it has a remote control. It's one of
the only iPhone speakerphone units out there now./p pscript type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"
galleryPost('ihomeip47', 3, ''); /script/p pstrongThe Price/strong: $199/p pstrongThe
Verdict/strong: Good, but not fantasticmdash;and a bit pricey. For all the functions it has, each
one has a small flaw that prevents the whole from being spectacular./p pThe main point of the iP47
is the speakerphone functionality, which connects to your iPhone via Bluetooth (not via dock
connector). The speakers for speakerphoning sound fantastic, but the microphone is definitely less
impressive. Everyone we called said we sounded like we were on speakerphone and had varying degrees
of difficulty understanding us once we moved too far away from the base. But, it was a joy for
ius/i to use it, no matter what the other people said. Their voices came through quite nicely, and
it can be bloud/b./p pOther bits like iPod music playback and AM/FM radio were alright, but not
great. The speakers are slightly tinny for the size, and in general the sound reproduction can be
described as top-heavy. For playing back music as an alarm clock in the mornings, it's definitely
more than adequate, but it's no substitute for a decent speaker system./p pWe didn't get a chance
to test the A2DP stereo Bluetooth playback, but other features like alarm clock, radio, and the
remote all worked fine./p pThe biggest function is the speakerphone, which, like we said, works
just fine on our end. You can charge your iPhone at the same time you're talking (iPhone 3G
compatible) and even leave your phone in another room and still be able to converse. The price is
fairly steep at $199, but for users who NEED a better speakerphone than the one built in, we'd
recommend it. [a href="http://www.ihomeaudio.com/products.asp?product_id=10247"iHome/a]/p br

While the N97 was free to
fondle, the slightly less exciting E63 was decidedly
bolted to a table, so we had to take what angles we could get. The phone is basically a cheap-o
version of the E71: Nokia figured it had a
good thing going on in that QWERTY candybar, and decided to spread the love at a lower price point,
with a slightly thicker, plastic handset. The good news is that no matter what you do to cheapen
the phone, the E63 comes from good stock, and is really a compelling form factor. The slight bump
in thickness is negligible, and while the cheaper materials are easily distinguished from the
luxury feel of the E71, the phone by no means feels cheap. Except for the keyboard. For some reason
Nokia opted to remove the hardened, clickier E71 keys and replace them with a softer, rubberier
keyboard with a considerable amount of distributed give to it -- that still leaves it as one of
Nokia's best QWERTYs to date, but we greatly prefer the E71. The other compelling difference
between the phone and its inspiration is the inclusion of a full 3.5mm headphone jack, instead of
the mini jack found on the E71. Not bad at all, but we'd guess Nokia saved a lot more money in
materials and manufacturing process than with the sorry removal of GPS and HSDPA.
