!
Universal Music Group parent company Vivendi released its Q2 results today. (PDF of earnings release)
First half evenues of €2,044 million were 4.9% improvement at constant currency
and a 2.4% decline in actual currency. Digital revenues were up 33%, the same year-over-year
improvement achieved in Q1. The company claimed growth in music publishing, merchandising and
license income but offered no supporting numbers.
Q2 revenues were €1,011 million, a 3% gain at constant currency and a 5.3%
decline in actual currency.
Not great but not bad all things considered. Revenue is only part of the story. Improved digital
margins may be helping the overall but we weren't given any information. Unlike most Vivendi
earnings releases, this one was void of anything but gross revenue numbers. No EBITA or operating
profit numbers were given for any of its divisions.

Vivendi Games has reported that its revenues for the first half of 2008 totaled €444
million, compared to €500 million during the same period last year.
The company attributed the fall in revenues to the strong showing of Blizzard’s second
World of Warcraft expansion, The Burning Crusade, during the first half of 2007, and noted that
all business segments had been impacted by unfavorable currency exchange movements.

Scripps' (NYSE: SSP) big comparison servicesShopzilla and
uSwitch continued on a decent turnaround path
this quarter. On the company's conference call, management said that for the year they expect
$8-$10 million in profit for the two services. CFO Joseph NeCastro warned, however, that
Shopzilla's sponsored links arrangement with Google (NSDQ: GOOG) expires on October 31st: "We are in active discussions with them right
now, but depending on where we end up, we could see some impact at the beginning in the fourth
quarter." Management played it pretty coy on what they were getting at, though when pressed on
the probability of working out an arrangement, NeCastro just said: "We have deal with Google if
we want it."
-- Housing Economy: There's been talk that the Scripps cable networks (HGTV in
particular) could be particularly exposed to the weak housing economy. Here's their spin on that:
"Our endemics for HGTV, which leads to the question you asked about the housing slump, have
actually been fairly very strong, particularly at the big box endemics. And when you think about
it, HGTV the real substance of HGTV is about improving the experience of living within
the home you have and so to some extent the housing dilemma has drawn A) more audience
to HGTV and B) more advertiser interest in this specific category related to home improvement."
-- For Sale?: In response to a question, CEO Kenneth Lowe insisted that Scripps
Networks was not for sale: "...let me repeat what I have been saying publicly at recent forums,
whether it is Bloomberg or CNBC or recently out on the road show, we did not execute this
spin off for purpose of selling the cable networks interactive businesses; they not for
sale. If you'll excuse the analogy, it's some what flattering to have a house that
everybody wants to buy, before you've even put a sales sign in the front yard. There no for sales
sign. That does not prevent rumors that does it not prevent any window and there is
nothing we can do about that.

Windows/Mac/Linux: At the very least, the free, just-released Zimbra Desktop client gives
non-paying Yahoo Mail users IMAP-style offline access to their messages. More than that, though,
Zimbra adds a few features to Yahoo, Gmail, AOL, or any other POP/IMAP account that could be
pretty useful—at least at some point down the road. Message tagging and nested conversation
arrows are pretty nice features for any services that don't already have them, but they don't
sync back, or work with Gmail's labels. There's also a bare-bones word processor/spreadsheet, a
(non-syncing) calendar, and more search options, including attachment filtering. Overall, though,
the real benefit is Zimbra's ability to synchronize your outbox and mail folders before you go
offline. Zimbra Desktop is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems.

Four Google (NSDQ: GOOG) executives may be standing trial over failing
to adequately monitor third-party content posted to their Italian language site. Italian
prosecutors are preparing to file charges in a two-year old case against the Google employees
over a video uploaded to the search giant's Italian site, the Wall Street Journal is reporting. Prosecutors are expected to
charge the execs for defamation and violation of privacy after they failed to control the content
of the site.
Google spokesperson Stefano Hesse said that the company has been cooperating with the authorities
and had removed the video "within hours" of having been told of its presence on the site. The
191-second video shows four youths taunting their autistic classmate. He noted that under EU
rules, and Italian law, the company isn't required to monitor third party content on its sites,
but takes down any offensive material when it is notified.
The target of the investigation includes Google's legal representative and chairman of its
Italian unit at the time; another Google Italy board member who has since left; its head of
privacy policies in Europe; and its former head of Google Video for Europe. Note that the Italian
authorities are going after these particular persons because they had "authority" over the
operations involved.
Google is facing a number of lawsuits across Europe over uploaded videos. In April, French TV network TF1 sued YouTube, claiming
intellectual property infringement. Two months later, Spain's Telecinco sued the site over the same issue.
YouTube has agreed in court to remove videos requested by Telecinco.
Earlier today Corvida set a
difficult challenge for RWW readers, based on a new service called 12Seconds.tv. The challenge is to say "ReadWriteWeb" 5 times really
fast in 12 seconds or less. Now, it's well known that the name 'ReadWriteWeb' is a tongue twister
- even I have trouble pronouncing it at times, and I created the name! Check out some of the
entrants so far, very funny...
Corvida herself was one of the first to give it a try:
MacTyler almost gets there, so close! At the end he slaps himself in the face (that's what the
screenshot above is). This was his second attempt, his first is here.
