Sans même entrer
dans le vif du sujet, Bottomless Belly Button, roman graphique de
Dash Shaw, en impose par
ses mensurations : 720 pages, un dos de 5,5 cm sur lequel on trouve une foultitude d’infos,
bref, une sacrée bête. Acclamé meilleure bande dessinée
indépendante de l’année aux USA, le pavé édité par
Fantagraphics arrive aux
éditions Çà et là pour 30 €, un an
après la sortie du tout aussi imposant Château l’Attente.
Mais rien à voir ici avec de la fantasy médiévale, Bottomless Belly
Button flirte du côté de la chronique sociale iconoclaste à
travers les aventures de la famille Loony, qu’on croirait presque sortie d’un film de
Wes Anderson, genre Famille Tenenbaum. Il faut dire qu’après 40 ans
de mariage, les parents Loony annoncent leur divorce, et réunissent tout le monde dans la
maison familiale. Fantaisie parmi d’autres, Peter, le cadet de la famille, apparaît
la quasi-totalité du bouquin sous les traits d’une grenouille –
même s’il nous a fallu un quart du livre pour comprendre que ses narines
n’étaient pas ses yeux ! –, en écho à sa position
de loser que ce soit sur le plan professionnel ou sentimental. Lui, comme les autres, va vivre un
séjour riche en rebondissements tapant au cÅ“ur de ses complexes. À la
fin, tous les personnages auront évolué de façon perceptible.
Varié et hétéroclite, tant sur les thèmes que sur le plan visuel,
avec des mises en pages éclatées pour rythmer les différentes parties et de
nombreux jeux graphiques avec des onomatopées d’ambiances “musique à
fond” et de mouvements “emmêle”, les 720 pages se lisent d’une
traite. Pourtant, Bottomless Belly Button aura du mal à
séduire ceux pour qui les histoires qui mènent en voyage dans la psyché des
personnages ne font ni chaud ni froid. Reste qu’en la matière, grâce à
ses trouvailles graphiques et à sa façon de traiter de façon simple les
choses complexes, le roman graphique de Dash Shaw est ce qui s’est fait de mieux cette
année !

À la façon de l’Étrangleur de
Tardi chez Casterman, Carabas s’essaye au format tabloïd en proposant
une histoire courte de Low Moon, le nouveau Jason, déjà
dispo chez l’éditeur dans un petit format de 180 pages vendu 20 euros. Cette version
allégée, proposée 3 euros au format journal, nous fait profiter en
très grand format des situations cocasses imaginées par Jason, soit un western
où le jeu d’échec semble avoir remplacé les bons vieux colts
poussiéreux. À cela s’ajoutent les habituels running gags et les innombrables
comiques de situation. Forcément Jasonesque.
En deux mots : Western et mat

The Economist
reports that experimental tests of the controversial "broken windows theory" of social
behavior indicate that the theory is correct.
The most dramatic result, though, was the one that showed a doubling in the number of people who
were prepared to steal in a condition of disorder. In this case an envelope with a EUR5 ($6) note
inside (and the note clearly visible through the address window) was left sticking out of a post
box. In a condition of order, 13% of those passing took the envelope (instead of leaving it or
pushing it into the box). But if the post box was covered in graffiti, 27% did. Even if the post
box had no graffiti on it, but the area around it was littered with paper, orange peel, cigarette
butts and empty cans, 25% still took the envelope.

At the community level, disorder and crime are usually inextricably linked, in a kind of
developmental sequence. Social psychologists and police officers tend to agree that if a window
in a building is broken and is left unrepaired, all the rest of the windows will soon be broken.
This is as true in nice neighborhoods as in rundown ones. Window-breaking does not necessarily
occur on a large scale because some areas are inhabited by determined window-breakers whereas
others are populated by window-lovers; rather, one unrepaired broken window is a signal that no
one cares, and so breaking more windows costs nothing.
Reading these articles, I wondered: how does the broken windows theory apply to online spaces?
Perhaps like so:
Much of the tone of discourse online is governed by the level of moderation and to what extent
people are encouraged to "own" their words. When forums, message boards, and blog comment threads
with more than a handful of participants are unmoderated, bad behavior follows. The appearance of
one troll encourages others. Undeleted hateful or ad hominem comments are an indication that that
sort of thing is allowable behavior and encourages more of the same. Those commenters who are
normally respectable participants are emboldened by the uptick in bad behavior and misbehave
themselves. More likely, they're discouraged from helping with the community moderation process
of keeping their peers in line with social pressure. Or they stop visiting the site altogether.
Unchecked comment spam signals that the owner/moderator of the forum or blog isn't paying
attention, stimulating further improper conduct. Anonymity provides commenters with immunity from
being associated with their speech and actions, making the whole situation worse...how does the
community punish or police someone they don't know? Very quickly, the situation is out of control
and your message board is the online equivalent of South Central Los Angeles in the 1980s,
inhabited by roving gangs armed with hate speech, fueled by the need for attention, making things
difficult for those who wish to carry on useful conversations.
But what about a site's physical appearance? Does the aesthetic appearance of a blog affect
what's written by the site's commenters? My sense is that the establishment of social norms
through moderation, both by site owners and by the community itself, has much more of an impact
on the behavior of commenters than the visual design of a site but aesthetics does factor in
somewhat. Perhaps the poor application of a default MT or Wordpress template signals a lack of
care or attention on the part of the blog's owner, leading readers to think they can get away
with something. Poorly designed advertising or too many ads littered about a site could result in
readers feeling disrespected and less likely to participate civilly or respond to moderation.
Messageboard software is routinely ugly; does that contribute to the often uncivil tone found on
web forums?

Hi
Im havng problems with a 2G iphone. The screen flickers a lot of the time when in use.
When it flickers the screen goes white with multicoloured lines going across vertically and
horizontally. It will stay there until i push the screen randomly again. Ive found a way to make it
stop flickering momentarily but it just keeps coming back. The flicker can be resolved temporarily
if i push the top right hand side of the screen or the black button on the top right of the
phone
flickering happens randomly even when it is not being touched.
does anyone know if ill need to have my lcd replaced or just repaired? it seems like something is
loose or theres pressure against something.
The phone is still useable as when it is not flickering everything works fine. The screen hasnt
leaked or cracked or anything like that and is perfectly normal when not in flickering mode. To me
it seems like something is loose inside or something ike that.

especially when you take a look at its kiddy-like form factor. Well, one thing that cannot be

this handset can be "pulled" downwards to reveal its navigation keys, although we're not too sure
where composing text messages and emails come in since there is no alphanumeric keyboard in sight.

So I have created a video presentation for a project I am working on using Final Cut Pro. I noticed
Final Cut Pro creates a default folder in Documents called "Final Cut Pro Documents." This folder
contains six additional folders:
1. Audio Render Files
2. Autosave Vault
3. Capture Scratch
4. Render Files
5. Thumbnail Cache Files
6. Waveform Cache Files
Is it safe to delete these six folders? I wouldn't otherwise care, but collectively they are taking
up 25 GB on my HD. I'm not planning to delete the actual FCP project files and
their attached media, but rather the above six folders which appear to be cache...? Do I run any
risk of losing my entire presentation if I delete these six folders, or is it simply a matter of
just re rendering my project if I delete them?

The NBER is a private group of leading economists charged with dating the start and end of economic
downturns. It typically takes a long time after the start of a recession to declare its start
because of the need to look at final readings of various economic measures.
"The committee views the payroll employment measure, which is based on a large survey of employers,
as the most reliable comprehensive estimate of employment," said the group's statement. "This
series reached a peak in December 2007 and has declined every month since then."
Employers have trimmed payrolls by 1.2 million jobs in the first 10 months of this year. On Friday,
economists are predicting the government will report a loss of another 325,000 jobs for November.

So as I was talking with my brother tonight on my iPhone 3G and I tried to check my RSS Feeds and
nothing would show so I went into the app-store and got a error saying it could not access
itunes.
As I talked on the phone wifi would not work so I turned it off and 3G did work while in a call.
Once the call was over wifi worked again! I was also on my laptop at the same time and checked to
se if my network was down but it was not. So it only leaves me to believe that Wifi does not work
on the iPhone when in a call! And that is lame!!
Does anyone else have this problem?

Ok, I bought a new flash drive, 16GB. I can get it to read on Windows XP fine, it is formatted in
Fat32. But when I connect it to my mac under Leopard OS X 10.5.5, it doesn't see it. It doesn't
even come up under disk utility.
Is there anyway to get it working? Or should I send it back?
Also, the activity light works properly when connected to XP, (starts flashing), but when connected
to my mac it just stays solid.
*edit: whoops, I fixed it. It seems there wasn't enough power on the keyboard's USB port to run it,
so I had to hook it right in the back. Kind of a nuisance. Please lock / delete this thread.

Sometimes I'll be listening to music and then I'll pause the iPod and go back to the home screen
then I'll take out my headphones so I can put it back in my pocket. But sometimes the iPhone will
immediately go back to some random song in iPod and play the music crazy loud!
I can't tell you how annoying this is when on the train or even at work. Is this a glitch or is it
something I am doing?

I have an AppleTV, a Samsung series 6 plasma, and a Bose 3-2-1 GS receiver/DVD player/speaker
set-up. The problem I have is the following: I have encoded about 300 movies with the required AAC
track and then the AC-3 track, and occasionally another AC-3 director commentary track or other
such audio, always in AC-3 format. The AppleTV recognizes these multiple audio tracks, but refuses
to play the AC-3 track, instead, playing the AAC track.
The connection of devices is as follows - AppleTV -> Samsung Plasma via HDMI -> audio to BOSE
via optical out from plasma.
Is it possible that in the HDMI handshake, the plasma is calling for stereo sound only, since that
is what it's speakers are set-up for (even though I'm not using them) and that is all the AppleTV
will provide (thus the AAC track)? I don't have a receiver with HDMI inputs, so I'm unable to hook
this up differently to test it with a true 5.1 source.

One complaint that I have had about my iPhone since I first got it, was that it forgot iPod tracks
that were played. This happened particularly after switching from one playlist, to another, and
always after a respring/reboot.
I use smart playlists extensively, that rely on "Last Played" and "Playcount" info, so this is a
big deal to me.
My playlists refresh themselves continuously, because I always add, "Not Played Within the Last 3
Days." That way, whenever a track is played, it disappears from the playlist, to be replaced by
something fresh.
This is great, unless the stupid thing forgets that it already played those tracks.
My fix for this is that I have actually been recreating a playlist of tracks that did not record as
being played, and then I'll play that playlist in my iPod. That way, when I sync both my iPod and
iPhone, the data will merge, and the smart playlists will update. Yes, I'm that neurotic. Quite
frankly, this is a major pain!
This morning, I was about to go through my usual routine, of syncing both my iPod and iPhone, when
I realized that nothing was missing!
There were no tracks in any of my listened-to smart playlists that had been played within the last
3 days! I checked my "Recently Played" playlist, and there they all were!
I'm hoping this isn't an isolated incident. This is the first time that I've checked for this since
updating to 2.2, and I'm hoping that Apple finally fixed this. I'm fairly sure that this must be
the case, since I know that some of those tracks were played before a reboot, and they were still
recorded as played, which never has worked for me before!
Has anyone else experienced this?
