It's been really weird to see various politicians in the US go after online gambling in a variety
of questionable ways, from Kentucky's attempt to a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081020/0058002578.shtml"seize domain names/a to the
federal government forcing banks to a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20081112/1459092811.shtml"block financial transactions/a for
any gambling site. But one of the oddest moves has been to go after any publication that a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20040315/0130237.shtml"allowed online gambling ads/a to show
up on their website. More than four years ago a bunch of websites, including Yahoo and Google a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20040803/1848248.shtml"were sued/a for allowing gambling ads
to show up on searches. The two big search engines eventually settled with the federal government
to try to block out gambling ads, but this particular lawsuit, based on California state law,
continued. br /br / It took a while, but a court has finally ruled that a
href="http://blog.ericgoldman.org/archives/2008/11/search_engines_4.htm" target="_new"the search
engines are protected by section 230 of the DMCA/a, and they aren't responsible for ads posted by
users -- even if they happen to get through the filters that Google and Yahoo set up to try to
prevent gambling ads. There are a few important points to note here: (1) Just because the site is
getting ipaid/i for the content, does not mean that section 230 safe harbors don't apply. We often
hear people say that if a company is making money they must lose the safe harbors. That's simply
not true, (2) Just because the search engines proactively try to filter out the content, they don't
lose the safe harbors either. In fact, in this case the judge seems even more sympathetic because
of that. There's a misconception out there among many that if you do meddle in the content at all,
you give up your safe harbors. Again, that's not true.br /br /a

Dave sent us this tasty step-by-strep for homebrewing root beer -When I asked them about the
yeast, the man behind the counter gave me a dreadful warning that making root beer with yeast is
like making bombs. He said it was too dangerous as the bottles have a high likelihood of
exploding. He also said that they had a high likelihood of fermenting the root beer and so it was
a very poor way to make root beer. The method he suggested instead was carbon dioxide infusion.
This required a carbon dioxide tank and regulator (I borrowed this from Dave) and a cornelious
keg, which I purchased from Main Street Homebrew. It was used and set me back about $45. With the
extracts and the book, I spent about another $25.Mmmm ... me likey non-explosive root beer -

height="526" align="left" hspace="4" vspace="2" align="center" /Windows only: Free text replacement
application PhraseExpress updates to version 6.0, sporting a handful of new time-saving features
and stability improvements. If you're unfamiliar with text replacement apps like PhraseExpress,
they're like digital shorthand for your computer; the user defines small text snippets that expand
to larger pieces of text, so when you type code,sig/code, for example, a text replacement app can
expand that text to a full text signature. We've developed our own text replacement app here at
Lifehacker, a
href="http://lifehacker.com/software/texter/lifehacker-code-texter-windows-238306.php"Texter/a,
which was inspired by the Mac-only a
href="http://www.smileonmymac.com/TextExpander/"TextExpander/a, but PhraseExpress has a ton to
offer in its own right. Among new features, PhraseExpress 6 supports HTML formatting, faster load
times, advanced options for triggering text replacements, application-specific replacements, and
autocompletion of words. As an added bonus, the new version can also run off your thumb drive, so
you can take advantage of your PhraseExpress timesavers no matter what computer you're using. I'm
partial to Texter for obvious reasons, but PhraseExpress is undeniably awesome. PhraseExpress is
free for non-commercial use, costs $50 for a professional license. div class="related"a

ExtendMedia has confirmed with us that it has raised
$10 million in Series C funding from previous backers TVM Capital, Atlas Venture and Venrock
Associates, as was reported this morning by peHUB based on
a regulatory filing. The Newton, Mass.-based company powers consumer video services for customers
including media companies and consumer electronics makers.
ExtendMedia has secured some high-profile deals, but they haven’t necessarily gone all that
well. It helped power SanDisk’s TakeTV and
Fanfare PC-to-TV content service, which shut down just eight
months after launch. It was also behind last year’s problematic release of NBC Direct, the
network’s video download software that sucked up users’ PC
resources. But it’s also the chosen media delivery partner for
AT&T’s new CDN effort.
ExtendMedia CEO Keith Kocho attested in a phone call today that the economic downturn has not
negatively affected his company — he said he actually expects harder times will be a good
thing for ExtendMedia, in that it will help lessen the competition. While claiming you’re
exempt from a market this bad doesn’t sound particularly tenable, it’s true that
Kocho was able to raise $10 million in the current climate. However, that’s less than
ExtendMedia raised in its $12 million Series B round in April of last year. The company’s
total funding amounts to $23 million. It has approximately 50 employees, and it released a new version of
its platform earlier this month.
peHUB also reported that KZO Innovations, a
streaming video provider whose web site is incredibly obtuse, has secured $1.68 million of a
$2.08 million Series A round led by Valhalla Partners.

One of my favorite shows on TV is METALOCALYPSE, a show which parodies other "band" and
supernatural programs, combining dark comedy and Apocalyptic intrigue in following the exploits of
the part-American/part-Scandinavian death metal band Dethklok. The episodes follow the band's
everyday life, with a Dethklok song being a common feature near the end of every episode. The
second season of the show hits DVD tomorrow and I highly recommend checking 'em both out. Beyond
the break you can chew on a short clip from the series, courtesy of UGO.

It appears that LAKE MUNGO has been impressing the masses. We learned this afternoon from a
reliable source that writer-director Joel Anderson is in final talks (meaning he isn't
signed on just yet) to pen the screenplay for Warner Bros. Pictures' newest Twilight Zone feature film. In the
initial announcement it was revealed that they not seeking to remake an episodic movie, as the only
big-screen version of the show did 25 years ago, but rather hope to build one continuing story line
based on one or more episodes. Paramount Vantage announced they'll be remaking Anderson's MUNGO,
which tells the story (in documentary style) of a teenager whose apparent death sets off a series
of paranormal events.

Assuredly one of the biggest complaints with emUncharted: Drake's Fortune/em was the lack of

trailer, more information is expected during SpikeTV's Video Game Awards on December 14.pa

My macs only have imovie 6, so it appears that I need to purchase some newer software to download
family video footage from our new canon HF10.
Question is what to buy? I understand that imovie 08 will work, and perhaps Final Cut Express or
Final Cut Pro.
I do not expect to be doing much editing (takes too much time); but I do care about (i) user
friendliness; (ii) ease of management of video assets; and (iii) flexibility of use of the stored
video in years to come.
By item (ii) above, I simply mean, I wish to be able to find video clips based on some type of file
system or key word system; then burn them or share them somehow, etc., without too much fuss.
Modern life seems to be giving us so very much storage capacity, being able to search and to find
things becomes increasingly important.
By item (iii), I am asking whether the available programs will save the video in some weird type of
format (beta vhs), or something that is likely to be standard for a while (or transfiqurable to a
later standard ).
Any thoughts would be most welcomed.
Thanks.
