Camera-maker RED has detailed the specifications of its upcoming EPIC X bundle, and outlined
pricing information for the basic Scarlet kit with an 8X optical lens. The EPIC X package, built on
the 30mm by 15mm S35 sensor, will include a CF recording module, I/O module and battery module,
bundled in a package that carries the same $28800 price tag as the sensor alone. As a bonus, the X
package data...
h4Less space, more debate/h4 pWhile the FCC is happy to let consumers in the USA make use of the
space between TV channels, in the UK the debate is only just beginning..../p
Seriously, how many spare Xbox 360s does Benjamin
Heckendorn have laying around? By our count, this is the thirdinstance
where the modder extraordinaire has shoved
Microsoft's latest console into something that's theoretically playable on one's lap, and
obviously, this one is the best one evar. Dubbed the Xbox 360 Portable, the unit is said to weigh
almost as much as his sister's cat, and it differs from most other on-the-go 360s by featuring a
removable standard Xbox 360 hard drive, two accessible memory card slots, no keyboard (use the
chatpad!),
an internal WiFi module and beveled edges for extra safety. We'd ask what crazy mod he's planning
with all the free time coming up over the holiday break, but honestly, we'd prefer to be surprised.
You may remember Sanjiv Jivan as the GWT-Ext developer that changed over the
debacle. He then went on to start work on a GWT version of SmartClient libraries and has now
released SmartGWT 1.0.
It is a tour de force of not only a huge widget library, but he explains how it is much more:
So what’s so smart about SmartGWT? Let me try to explain. SmartGWT is not just another
Widget library. While most Ajax frameworks focus primarily on presentation and displaying mostly
read-only data, either local or via XML / JSON, SmartClient was built with server side
integration in mind. Most enterprise applications are not just about about data presentation, but
about being able to propagate data changes made by the user to the backend. So while its tempting
to use library X that has a cool tree widget, it’s not until you actually try to use it
your application that you encounter the real world hard problems. For example, how do you take
data from your business objects on the server to not only display in a tree widget, but also be
able to update your data model when, say, the user reorders the tree nodes or make edits /
deletes in the UI. How do you display hierarchical data where nodes may have hundreds of
children? And so on..
Most Ajax frameworks stop short and leave it up to the user to manage state on the client side
and propagating the changes to the server. This is not a trivial problem! Over the past few years
UI widget libraries have improved significantly and there are now various options available to
users. Simply put, having good looking widgets is not the hard problem today. In addition to
having good looking widgets, having end-to-end integration of the UI components with the backend
is the hard problem. It’s this 20% of the functionality that takes 80% of the time in
building most enterprise applications.
The showcase will give you a good
feel for what is out there, and it contains some interesting items including:
Miller
Columns: The ColumnTree provides an alternate navigation paradigm for Tree data, sometimes
called “Miller Columns” and seen in iTunes
Nested Grid: A
convenient way to display 1-n relationships
Printable
Views: SmartGWT supports printable views of its components.
Tile
View: Representation of data as “tiles”. Again, TileGrid supports data binding
so sort / filter and edits can be easily performed.
Calendars : A Google Calendar like widget that supports databinding so edits and drag drop
changes can easily be propgated to the server for persisting.
TreeGrid : Supports multiple columns, editing, column locking, lazy loading and more.
Really amazing work. Sanjiv recently had a Q&A session with InfoQ where he talks about
the approach taken in developing SmartGWT and the his thoughts on the differences between
SmartClient and Ext.
Earlier this week a Microsoft representative indicated that a deal offering 40 percent cash back at
HP.com would be restarted following Black Friday glitches. Now that appears less certain.
…But were afraid to ask. This is the title of this very interesting 34-slide
presentation on Google prepared by FaberNovel, a
french consulting firm. It is hard to realize the real nature of this just
10 years old giant given the number of services it has continuously released, updated (and
sometimes shut down) or
acquired.
This presentation gives a great overview of the company’s overall strategy and the reasons
it has become what it is today.
It addresses some key questions about the company’s future, presented in the slide above:
how Google won’t be affected by the crisis (not so sure about that
if you consider their own stock), its relation with Microsoft and its advantages on Facebook,
its footprint in the infrastructure and mobile world…
There is an interesting slide about how Google buys traffic through key partnership deals with
software or hardware companies (slide 14) Many tend to think Google has free traffic or zero
marketing costs which is a wrong assumption since it affects directly its P&L
For regular readers, most of this information will not be a surprise. But it is well organized
and structured and gives some good prospective. I just wished the presentation was focusing a
little more on the Giant’s weaknesses. A TechCrunch France reader funnily
commented that, only the absence of electricty could stop them. What we do know on the web is
that giants do not stay strong forever. The question is when will the wind change direction for
Google?

NewSight decided just removing the need for silly
glasses wasn't good enough, showing off the first 3D LED-based display. Each LED is arranged at a pitch of 6mm,
similar to current LCD 3D technology, so it can display the same content that's been
popping up as of late. The 180-inch 3D LED Video Wall is capable of combining with three others
to form a 360-inch screen, with a 20,000 hour warranty period on its LEDs and NewSight's digital
signage background, we can imagine watching
