Back in March, we noted that Warner Music Group had a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20080328/012123680.shtml"hired Jim Griffin/a, a music industry
guy who has been pushing the concept of a "blanket license" for file sharing. The idea would be to
get various ISPs to simply add an additional fee to ieveryone's/i internet access, have that money
go into a pool that the recording industry would be responsible for paying out -- and then let
people have free reign for file sharing. This is a bad idea for a variety of reasons. It's
basically a music tax -- allowing the record industry to be lazy. Someone else gets to go out and
collect all this money and hand it over to the industry to distribute (or, actually, a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20060921/192446.shtml"not distribute/a). It effectively sets
the business model of the recording industry in stone, and harms a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080605/1638421319.shtml"better/a, a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20080115/095022.shtml"more innovative/a business models by
inserting the recording industry (and not the musicians) into a role where they don't belong. br
/br / We hadn't heard much about this music tax lately, but apparently Griffin has been focused on
getting universities to buy into the plan first. An anonymous reader passed on some details, saying
that Columbia, Stanford, University of Chicago, University of Washington, MIT, University of
Colorado, University of Michigan, Cornell, Penn State, University of California at Berkeley and
University of Virginia have expressed interest and talks are under way. A basic presentation that's
being given to these universities is below (if you're reading via another site, click through to
see it): center iframe src='http://docs.google.com/EmbedSlideshow?docid=dhpvc2mr_115m5prjqd5'
frameborder='0' width='410' height='342'/iframe /center There's obviously something appealing about
ending the lawsuits and letting people file share freely. But, it's quite problematic to add an
effective "tax" when none is necessary. Plenty of other business models, such as those we've
outlined here and elsewhere can suffice to fund the creation of music. On top of that, giving the
proceeds of this tax to the very industry that has so badly mismanaged musicians for so many years
is a travesty -- sort of like bailing out the failed auto industry or banking industry. The
presentation says that a nonprofit has been set up to handle the money, claiming that it's "to be
clear we intend to operate with good intentions and not profit as a motive," but given the way the
industry has acted in the past, that's difficult to take at face value. Also, this isn't ireally/i
a license. It's a "covenant not to sue" -- meaning that lawsuits could still result. br /br / Of
course, while the introduction frames this as a "voluntary" blanket licensing program, the
presentation also mentions that they'll need some way to get iall/i ISPs and universities to buy
into the plan, or they'll have to work out a way to "avoid massive leakage." So, basically, it's
not voluntary at all. It's either join, or get saddled with significant limitations. In other
words: all ISPs and universities need to agree to pay a huge tax to the very industry that hasn't
been able to adapt, and then trust them to distribute the funds fairly.br /br /a

width="1" height="1" //divpThe head of the Russian Orthodox church, Patriarch Alexy II, who played
an influential role in denouncing the KGB coup against Michael Gorbachev, has died./ppThe church
said the 70-year-old died at his residence outside Moscow on Friday. It did not give the cause of
death, but the patriach had suffered from a heart ailment - and was known to be seriously ill
earlier this year./ppThe outspoken cleric had led the world's biggest Orthodox church since 1990,
presiding over a flock that by most estimates numbers two-thirds of Russia's population of 142
million./ppBorn as Aleksey Ridiger, from a family of aristocratic German immigrants, the patriach
presided over some of the most tumultuous times in modern Russian history. He also faced persistent
accusations - denied by the church - that he worked for the KGB./ppHe entered Leningrad theological
seminary in 1947 and graduated in 1949. He served as a priest in Estonia - then part of the Soviet
empire - and rose rapidly through the clerical ranks, becoming a metropolitan bishop aged 39, and
winning election as patriarch in 1990, as the Soviet Union was collapsing./ppAs patriarch, Alexy II
vigorously advocated the return of the Orthodox church to the centre of Russian life and
spirituality. He oversaw a major religious revival in Russia, with hundreds of churches built or
restored across the country./ppHe also denounced the coup plotters who tried to topple Gorbachev,
the Soviet leader, in August 1991./ppThis morning, Gorbachev was said to be shocked by his death.
"I respected him deeply," Gorbachev said, according to the Interfax agency, adding that he was "so
shocked that it is very hard for me to find words on the spot". Russian television immediately
began running excerpts from what it said was Alexy's last TV interview at the end of
October./ppAccording to the British-based KGB defector Oleg Gordievsky, Alexy worked for the KGB
for over 40 years - and was mentioned in KGB archives under the codename Drozdov. The Moscow
patriarchy has denied this claim - though Alexy II has himself acknowledged that under communism,
bishops were forced to compromise with Soviet power./ppAlexy's funeral is likely to take place in
the cathedral of Christ the Saviour - the monumental church opposite the Kremlin and next to the
Moscow river, destroyed by Stalin but reconstructed during the mid-1990s under Boris Yeltsin. The
cathedral was the venue for Yeltsin's own funeral last year./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right:

I had some fun-and-games getting my iBook display to work ( http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=610191) and was told by the ever-helpful
OrangeSVTguy that resetting the chip is a short-term fix as it would work loose again soon enough.
He also said he had added a shim of some sort to keep pressure on the chip, but even this only gave
his iBook six months of life before it died. :(
I wanted to hear of anyone else who had experience with a similar problem and ideally knew of a
longer-term solution. I really like this Mac (my first for a very long time) and don’t want
to get used to it only to lose it after a few months. Also I’m not sure I will be able to
afford to replace it with another one soon.
Is there maybe a way to strip it down and solidly re-fit the chip? Or maybe buying a replacement
chip is the answer or a better shim-type solution? The Mac will not be moved around too much as it
will only be taken out of the house for the odd trip to college by my eldest son.
