Apple’s App Store recently hit the 10,000
application mark, and while the store does a pretty good job at turning up impressive new
applications through its Top App lists and on banners that scatter the store, most users are only
exposed to a tiny fraction of the applications that are available. Now Y Combinator
startup AdPinion has
leveraged the technology behind its advertising voting
engine to create a recommendation service for iPhone apps called Appalanche, hoping to
surface the gems that are most appealing to users and might otherwise go unnoticed. To visit the
web app, visit this site from your
browser.
The interface is sleek and intuitive, and looks great on the iPhone’s screen (the web app
is also compatible with standard PC web browsers). The site presents users with six applications
at a time, asking them to drag them into either a green “Like” section or a red
“Don’t Like” area”. After making a few choices, users can hit “More
recommendations” to see six new applications. Users can associate their recommendations to
an Email address, so they can build up a larger (and hopefully more accurate) database over time.
While the site looks very nice, it still has some shortcomings. Unless you have a comprehensive
knowledge of the applications on the App Store, most of the applications displayed by Appalanche
will be totally unfamiliar, which makes it hard to categorize them under ‘like’ or
‘dislike’. The icons and names for each app aren’t particularly informative,
and while you can see a brief description of each app by clicking on it once, the process is
tedious, especially on the iPhone’s small screen. And because it’s so tough to figure
out which applications you’re actually going to be interested in, the engine isn’t as
helpful as it could be. That said, I’d love to see a recommendation engine and AdPinion
certainly has the technology to do it - they just need a better interface.

Not terribly long ago we caught a few glimpses of a
prototype of the Grippity, a sort of garish looking back-typing keyboard. Well, the actual
production model's completed, and though it's lost some of it's Frankenstein-ish charm, it
continues to look rather insane and cool. The unit boasts a full QWERTY keyboard, for use with
eight-finger typing from the back, plus two triggers on the back that function as the mouse
buttons. As if that wasn't wild enough, it also boasts an orientation sensor that allows the 60
QWERTY keys to double as hot keys when the unit is flipped over. The final unit is expected in
about six months, and should retail for $100. Check out the gallery for more views of this
terrifically weird specimen.

Scott Cleland is a "telecom analyst" who, in reality, is actually paid a large sum of money by the
telcos to slam Google. He's become sort of a joke in DC circles. In the past, we noted his a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20080404/180724761.shtml"ridiculously bad math/a in claiming
that Google fleeced taxpayers out of $7 billion, as well as his claims that "open spectrum" is
somehow a href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20080131/003825134.shtml"anti-American/a. His main
issue, of course, is trying to dispense a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20061022/220402.shtml"bogus arguments/a for why net neutrality
is really a big scam by Google to keep its broadband bills cheap. To give Cleland credit, at least
he's not as bad as Mike McCurry, who once claimed that Google a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20060801/0219252.shtml"doesn't pay a dime/a for broadband.
McCurry, of course, has moved on from spinning for the telcos to spinning for a
href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20080925/0216422370.shtml"the entertainment industry/a, so
Cleland needed to up his game. br /br / He's now released a "study" claiming that a
href="http://precursorblog.com/content/google-uses-21-times-more-bandwidth-it-pays-first-ever-research-study"
target="_new"Google uses 21 times as much bandwidth as it pays for/a. First of all, this is simply
incorrect. Cleland doesn't know how much Google actually pays for broadband, so he comes up with a
small number, which is wrong a
href="http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2008/12/response-to-phone-companies-google.html"
target="_new"for a variety of reasons/a. br /br / He seems to conflate consumer broadband and
Google's broadband. This is based, in part, on the old telco argument that when you buy internet
access, you're only buying access a href="http://techdirt.com/articles/20060131/0923209.shtml"to
the middle/a of the internet, and you should have to pay a second time to actually ireach/i any
endpoint or other user. So, even though consumers pay for the bandwidth they use to reach Google,
Cleland appears to calculate that as being Google's responsibility, ignoring that consumers are
paying plenty for the right to reach Google (and the rest of the internet). As Cord Blomquist
points out, this is like a
href="http://techliberation.com/2008/12/04/google-bandwidth-study-proves-very-little/"
target="_new"pointing out that Best Buy should pay for the gas it takes/a for people to drive to
Best Buy. Broadband Reports also does a a
href="http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Scott-Cleland-Google-Using-21x-The-Bandwidth-They-Pay-For-99475"
target="_new"nice job deconstructing this/a. br /br / However, even if we ignore all the basic
facts and information that Cleland gets wrong, if we grant his premise, his argument still doesn't
make any sense. If anything, rather than being an argument in favor of the telcos' position,
Clelands report (if true) suggests that telco execs all deserve to be fired. After all, they're the
ones who set up the business model and the billing relationship, and if they're undercharging
Google by so much, then shouldn't they raise their prices? Of course, there's a good reason why
this doesn't happen: because Google is paying fair market value for its bandwidth, and if anyone
tried to charge them 21 times more, Google would quickly take its business elsewhere. So, based on
this report, either Cleland is dead wrong in his report, or the telcos who funded it are run by
morons who don't know how to set pricing correctly. Which one is more likely?br /br /a

When UserVoice launched
its hosted solution for companies looking to harness user feedback a little over 7 months ago, we
wrote it could well be
a replacement for e-mail when it comes to aggregating opinions, ideas and suggestions from
user / customer bases. Now, UserVoice says its offering is solid enough for enterprise usage and
is consequently dropping the beta
tag.
Billing itself as an
‘online suggestion box that sorts itself’, UserVoice enables companies to embed
widgets onto websites and applications to sollicit feedback from users in combination with a
Digg-like voting feature. The idea behind that approach is that it’s easier and more
scalable to crowdsource user opinions, ideas and suggestions than other ways of communication.
You can use the UserVoice service for free, but with a rather big limitation on features. More
advanced packages are available starting from $289 per month, and there are also special packages
for startups, non-profit organizations and educational institutions. If you want to take a look
at alternatives, you might want to check out similar service providers such as CrowdSound,
Suggestionbox and
Get Satisfaction.
UserVoice has attracted customers from various sizes so far, including nice references like Sun
Microsystems, Nokia and MySpace but also smaller web application providers like Blip.fm,
12seconds and Alert Thingy. According to the announcement, over 120 million widget impressions
have already been served, with over 530,000 votes logged to date. Not bad for a startup that
operates without outside financing apart from a small seed round from
Nuvoiz raised back in 2007.
Bonus points for using Initech as the company for the live
demo. Marvellous touch.
