Another day, another dock for the iPod and iPhone family - this time round we have DICE
Electronics to thank for their G2 Cradle. Meant to see action in a vehicle, the G2 will boast a
pass-through Dock Connector port which hooks up the cradle to a car integration kit, charger, or
rear-seat entertainment system. Coming in a black and brushed aluminum design, you get half a
dozen interchangeable cradles for the iPod classic, first-, second-, and third-generation iPod

It is a no brainer that HTC will take steps to defend itself fully against
Apple's actions, and in their own words, "HTC strongly advocates intellectual property
protection and will continue to respect other innovators and their technologies as we have always
done, but we will continue to embrace competition through our own innovation as a healthy way for
consumers to get the best mobile experience possible.” This coming from the company that
brought us the first 3.5" color touchscreen smartphone in the world in the form of the O2 XDA,
alongside other list of accolades which include the first Windows PDA, first Windows phone, first
3G CDMA EVDO smartphone, first gesture-based smartphone (take that, Apple!), first Google Android
smartphone and first 4G WIMAX smartphone. This court battle looks set to be interesting.
Telstra has announced plans to start trialling in its Next G network the Long Term Evolution

HTC just hit us up with an official response to Apple’s patent lawsuit
filed against them. In short, HTC is sticking up for themselves, naming the innovations
they’ve been to market with, and listing some of the industry-wide reckognition
they’ve received. Look, we’re not arguing for either side, like whether Apple is
wrong for filing suit for whatever reason, or whether HTC actually did violate some of
Apple’s patents, but this press release is more of a slight of hand movement than an actual
response. Though they do say pretty clearly that they will defend themselves. What do you think?
It’s after the break…
Seattle – March 17, 2010 – HTC Corporation today outlined
its disagreement with Apple’s legal actions and reiterated its commitment to creating a
portfolio of innovative smartphones that gives consumers a variety of choices. Founded in 1997
with a passion for innovation and a vision for how smartphones would change people’s lives,
HTC has continually driven this vision by consistently introducing award-winning smartphones with
U.S. mobile operators.
“HTC disagrees with Apple’s actions and will fully defend itself. HTC strongly
advocates intellectual property protection and will continue to respect other innovators and
their technologies as we have always done, but we will continue to embrace competition through
our own innovation as a healthy way for consumers to get the best mobile experience
possible,” said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. “From day one,
HTC has focused on creating cutting-edge innovations that deliver unique value for people looking
for a smartphone. In 1999 we started designing the XDA
The O2 XDA by HTC was the first 3.5-inch color touch screen smartphone in the world in 2002. and
T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition The T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone Edition by HTC was the first
3.5-inch color touch screen smartphone in the United States in 2002., our first touch-screen
smartphones, and they both shipped in 2002 with more than 50 additional HTC smartphone models
shipping since then.”
The industry has recognized HTC’s contributions through a variety of awards including Fast
Company’s 2010 Top 50 Most Innovative Companies and MIT Technology Review’s 2010 50
Most Innovative Companies. The GSMA also recently awarded the HTC Hero as the “Best Phone
of 2009.” Some of HTC’s technology firsts include:
First Windows PDA (1998)
First Windows Phone (June 2002)
First 3G CDMA EVDO smartphone (October 2005)
First gesture-based smartphone (June 2007)
First Google Android smartphone (October 2008)
First 4G WIMAX smartphone (November 2008)
In 2009, HTC launched its branded user experience, HTC Sense. HTC Sense is focused on putting
people at the center by making phones work in a more simple and natural way. This experience was
fundamentally based on listening and observing how people live and communicate.
“HTC has always taken a partnership-oriented, collaborative approach to business. This has
led to long-standing strategic partnerships with the top software, Internet and wireless
technology companies in the industry as well as the top U.S., European and Asian mobile
operators,” said Jason Mackenzie, vice president of HTC America. “It is through these
relationships that we have been able to deliver the world’s most diverse series of
smartphones to an even more diverse group of people around the world, recognizing that customers
have very different needs.”

Sprint didn’t offer any details on the price or availability date of the phone, only
noting: “While a pricing plan has not yet been determined for Nexus One, we are confident
that it will be consistent with Sprint’s commitment to deliver more value than our
competitors and keep pricing simple.”
Currently only T-Mobile offers the Nexus One at a subsidized rate. The new AT&T/Rogers
variant is only available at an unlocked price of $529. If Sprint is also offering the phone at
subsidized rate for new or existing customers, it could be a big seller for the company.
Sprint and Verizon use the same network technology (CDMA), and while phones are not
interchangeable between networks (theoretically it is possible, but the steps involved make it an
option even most phone geeks will avoid), manufacturers frequently release handsets for both
networks at the same time.

BarrioSquare, a FourSquare application for the Nokia N900,
left private testing on Monday and is now available at the N900’s App Manager. You may have
to enable the Extras-Devel
repository. This is great news because now more Nokia N900 users can start using this app. Watch
my quick overview of the app.
I like this application on the Nokia
N900 because it helps me find the places nearby to check-in, instead of manually looking for
them through the mobile Foursquare
website. My only complaint so far about BarrioSquare is that lists sometimes scroll too fast.
A workaround is to drag your finger diagonally instead of up and and down.
Update:Chris, the guy behind
Barriosquare, answered some questions I sent him shortly after the release.
What triggered the decision to finally put BarrioSquare in the Maemo repository?
I figure it was better to get the app out to the general public sooner, rather than later, and
given the entire uncertainty of ovi store publishing (dependency issues with python-qt4) I figure
might as well just get it out there now that it is in a fully functional state.
Any features to look out for in upcoming releases?
Ability to search for friends
Ability to see nearby tips
Ability to get a “popup” alert whenever friends check into a venue nearby
Venue (and nearby) specials
What other apps do u have planned for Maemo?
Google Maps type app using Google Maps flash API, PyQt-Webkit
Maybe a gowalla app?
Also building a reusable UI toolkit library to speed up application development

Yesterday, an updated version of Google's Nexus
One Android smartphone was released, compatible with AT&T and Rogers Canada's 3G networks.
Today, Sprint is letting everyone know that it is getting the device too.
This means that all four major wireless carriers have secured a spot for the Nexus One this year.
Google sells versions of the device optimized for T-Mobile and AT&T's wireless networks, and
a version for Verizon's network is still expected some time in the Spring, but the operator has
not put out any further notices about its availability.
Likewise, Sprint today isn't disclosing exactly when Google will start selling a
Sprint-compatible Nexus One, nor is it disclosing any pricing plans associated with the device.
Today's announcement is simply a confirmation that one is on the way "soon."
Yesterday
AT&T, today Sprint, tomorrow the world? In a press release this afternoon Sprint
announced the pending release of the HTC Nexus One:
Nexus One, the first wireless phone sold through Google’s web store, is planned for
Sprint’s 3G Mobile Broadband Network. Sprint will announce pricing and an exact
availability date soon.
As with all the carriers, the Nexus One will be sold exclusively through the google.com/phone web
store when it becomes available. We’ll let you know as soon as we hear any rumblings on the
exact release date. Another Nexus One release coming unannounced and out of left field. Wow.

Sprint is making the bold first move into 4G smartphone market next week, a Wall Street Journal report said today, when the company is expected to show
off the WiMAX-enabled HTC Supersonic.
The Supersonic has been a pretty big blip on the Android community's radar for several months,
after a whole list of HTC device names was uncovered in a leaked Sense UI ROM last December.
Since that time, a few more details have been discovered, and a few blurry spy camera shots and
renders have surfaced; but as far as official specs go, there are none. It looks to have the same
massive 4.3" screen that the HD2 has, run on the Android platform, and possibly contain a
Snapdragon processor.
Sprint is the only major mobile network operator with a higher-speed "4G" network immediately
available to consumers, but it is currently only accessible through USB dongles and portable
hotspots like the Sierra Wireless
Overdrive, and these are still only available in about 10 markets nationwide.
There are nearly 30 WiMAX networks active in the U.S. now under the Clear brand (a joint venture
of Sprint and Clearwire,) and this year Clearwire expects to complete 80 more cities including
major markets Chicago, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Seattle and Washington D.C.
Since Betanews is headquartered in Baltimore, we've been using Sprint's WiMAX network since it first launched in 2008. I ran a quick
test this morning to see how well the WiMAX connection holds up against my smartphones' 3G
connections, and the performance was actually only marginally better.
Using the FCC's Ookla network tester three times for each network, Sprint 4G averaged
5.35Mbps/.30Mbps with 130ms latency, Verizon 3G averaged 1.61Mbps/.65Mbps with 122ms latency, and
T-Mobile 3G averaged .5Mbps/.45Mbps with 215ms latency. Unfortunately, I didn't have a device
handy to test AT&T's speeds in the area this morning.
We will be meeting with both Sprint and HTC at CTIA next week and will be able to give you a
crystal clear look at the device if it does, in fact, show up.

Blockbuster is bringing its
OnDemand service to both
Windows Mobile and Google Android phones, starting March 24th with the launch of the T-Mobile HTC HD2 smartphone. On that device,
Blockbuster customers will be able to download and watch new releases directly on their mobile
phones while also gaining access to queue management and movie locator tools similar to those
found in Blockbuster's iPhone application.
The company has also confirmed that they're working on an Android app, which is likely to launch
on the "select Motorola phones" Blockbuster previously hinted at when they partnered with the
handset manufacturer last summer. Motorola is the maker of several popular Android-powered
handsets including the Droid, Backflip, Devour, Cliq and Cliq XT, but Blockbuster won't yet
confirm which of these will be able to utilize the new mobile service.
Sponsor
Focused on Mobile
Although Blockbuster's
annual report to the SEC hints at the company's financial troubles - troubles exacerbated by competitors like Netflix and
the pop-up video rental kiosks from Redbox -
the company has clearly not given up its will to compete. With offerings already available for
PCs, Samsung Blu-ray players, Samsung TV sets and Tivos, Blockbuster's strategy going forward is
attacking the mobile front with full force. In the works is an updated iPhone application, an
Android application (apparently for the Motorola phones, although the company won't directly
confirm this), the Windows Mobile application for the HD2 and the expectation that more carriers
and manufacturers will want to partner with them once they see what the company's mobile apps can
do.
Blockbuster vs Netflix: New Releases vs. Back Catalog
Where Blockbuster differs from Netflix is in its desire to forgo "streaming" in favor of
downloads when it comes to their on demand options. Unlike Netflix's desktop streaming service
and newly announced Silverlight-powered app for Windows Phone 7 Series devices, Blockbuster's OnDemand service for both
desktop and mobile actually downloads content to whatever hardware it runs on. According to Scott
Levine, Blockbuster's VP of Digital, it's not that the company is against streaming per
se - it's just that streaming over 3G is more of a challenge.
Instead of dealing with the network connectivity issues brought on by overloaded wireless
carriers or relegating themselves to putting out a limited "Wi-Fi only" type of application, the
company's mobile apps will actually download the movie a customer rents or purchases to the
handset and protect it using DRM (digital rights management) technology.
This solution allows Blockbuster to serve new releases to their mobile customers as opposed to
the "back catalog" content which is what, for the most part, Netflix's streaming service
currently provides, says Levine.
No Downloads on Apple Devices, but Working On Other Solutions
However, the
technology Blockbuster uses now to serve its movies to mobile devices limits what the company can
offer to iPhone, iPod Touch and soon, iPad users. This is due to the fact that Apple restricts
apps from saving movies to the device's hard drive, Levine explains. When asked if they had plans
to work around these restrictions in order to launch an iPhone/iPad app, he would only say that
the company was "exploring different options" and that they would "love to be there."
For now though, iPhone owners who use Blockbuster's mail service can manage their account with
the mobile
application which will soon be updated with more features. In the new release, there will be
improved remote control options for queue management plus tools that help you determine Blu-ray
store inventory, games store availability and the availability status for movies in your
Blockbuster queue.
More Details on Devices
T-Mobile has just launched the site for the
new HTC HD2 smartphone which lists the Blockbuster service among its many features. The
status of which Motorola phones will include the new mobile app is still unknown but Motorola's Android lineup
includes several devices running different versions of the Android OS. Both the Backflip, Cliq
and Cliq XT come with Android 1.5, but only the Blackflip is upgradeable to 2.1, according to Motorola's website. The Devour runs Android 1.6 and the Droid
runs 2.0. However, Verizon is pushing out the 2.1 update to the
Motorola Droid starting this Thursday.
The TimelineX 1830T is an 11.6" notebook featuring an HD 1366x768 display. Portability is one of
the selling points for this laptop, as it weights about 3lbs and measures under an inch thick. It's
not 100% certain if it will sport an Intel Core 2 Solo or an Intel Core i5 CPU, but either way Acer
is promising excellent battery life as well. Other features include HDMI out and 802.11a/b/g/n,
with options such as Bluetooth or 3G for those interested.
