News/release from robamacaf
I worked on this for the last two days and have it at least in a playable fashion. If you don't
know what Khet is, here is a description.
It's the game that combines lasers with classic strategy. Players alternate turns moving
Egyptian-themed pieces having two, one or no mirrored surfaces. All four types of pieces (pharaoh,
obelisk, pyramid and djed column) can either move one square forward, back, left, right, or
diagonal, or can stay in the same square and rotate by a quarter twist. Each turn ends by firing
one of the lasers built into the board. The laser beam bounces from mirror to mirror; if the beam
strikes a non-mirrored surface on any piece, it is immediately removed from play. The ultimate goal
is to illuminate your opponent's pharaoh, while shielding yours from harm!
(The red laser shoots out the top left, from the circle there, the grey one from the bottom right.
red pieces can't go on the grey squares and grey pieces can't go on the red squares)
This game is being released to get feedback, etc. I will be updating it with more features. As of
now, it is only 2 player on the same DS. I hope to add Wifi and computer AI soon. I will also be
adding different configurations to play with. There are 3 main ones in Khet but I am also going to
make it that players can make their own. I am also looking at redoing the graphics, possibly
3D.
As for now, enjoy the game! This is my FIRST DS game and also my first C/C++ program so please let
me know what you think!
v1.02 - 03 Dec 08
---------------------------------------
Added in the 3 basic layouts. These are the ones that are in the rules. The way it works is:
* Classic: Use this setup if this is your first time to play Khet. Good for learning the game
* Imhotep: A variation on CLASSIC that opens up new defensive possibilities.
* Dynasty: A setup with an immediate balance of offense and defense that develops quickly.
v1.01 - 03 Dec 08
---------------------------------------
* Added the ability to deselect an item, to do this just click any where off the game board
* Added a highlight so you can see which piece you have selected
* Added a version number on the Rules screen so you can see what version you have.
* (Updated link)
v1.00 - 03 Dec 08
--------------------------------------
*Game added

Since it looks like we're going to get some sort of I Am Legend
prequel or sequel down the road, leading to what could be a new, hip movie franchise featuring
Will Smith, why not spend some time this holiday season with the newer original remake (that sounds
weird, right?), and learn a bit more about the mythology behind the film. I know a lot of people
aren't too keen on I Am
Legend (The Smith Version), though I kinda dug it on my first viewing. Granted, I didn't see
the film until it hit Blu-ray last year, and I watched it with the alternate (and better, in my
opinion) ending, but ultimately I thought it was a fine, entertaining little creepshow.
Those willing to give the film a second chance (or watch it for the first time) might want to dive
into this pretty nifty Ultimate Collector's Edition, in stores December 9th on DVD and Blu-ray. The
latter edition arrived at my shack yesterday and I have to say it's a pretty neat little toy. You
can purchase the collection on DVD for $39.95 over here and on Blu-ray for
$47.95 over here.
Check out what you get:
Blu-ray:
o. 3-Disc Special Edition DVD
o. Exclusive 44-Page Concept Sketch Book
o. 10 Concept Illustrations
o. 6 Art Cards Showing International Cities Devastated by the Plague
Virus
o. Collectible Lenticular
o. Letter from the Director
o. New Movie Commentary by Director Francis Lawrence and
Screenwriter/Producer Akiva Goldsman
More after the jump ...

Virtual goods were all the rage a while ago, but nowadays I
don’t hear that much about them. Perhaps everyone got bored of Second Life, companies
stopped opening virtual headquarters in virtual worlds, and WoW players…well,
they’re a lost cause anyway, tormented creatures always destined to live in the shadow
(also, Blizzard does not allow off-site trade with virtual money or goods from the game).
This doesn’t mean that the marketplace for virtual goods does not exist; it’s just
not that hip anymore. PlaySpan wants to
change this, and they’ve launched the PlaySpan Virtual Goods Marketplace which will contain
items from popular MMOs such as EVE Online, Gunz, Kal, Knight Online, Saga, Shaiya, Silk Road,
Soldier Front, Trickster and War Rock. This is not a black or grey market, though: only
publisher-approved items will be sold at PlaySpan.
PlaySpan focuses on the young audience who might not have access to credit cards (more
specifically, their dads told them they’ll throw them out in the street if they touch their
wallet again). Therefore, they’ve set up a number of alternate micropayment methods to give
the little rascals what they crave. Need a time code, a cool item, or some virtual money? No
problemo, you can buy them here if you have access to either a credit card, PayPal or PayByCash.
If you’re not convinced, PlaySpan sweetened the deal with an introductory offer: new
Marketplace customers will receive 100 free points on registration.

Summary: We introduce REJECTOR, software for parameter estimation and comparison
of alternate models of population history from genetic data via a rejection algorithm. Through
coalescent simulation, REJECTOR generates numerous gene genealogies, and hence simulated data,
under a model of population history specified by the user. Summary statistics derived from such
simulated data are compared with observed statistics, leading to acceptance or rejection of a
given set of parameter values. We performed tests of the software using known parameter values in
order to assess the inferential power provided by each summary statistic. The tests demonstrate
the precision and accuracy of estimation made possible using this approach.

You saw some reviews hit the web regarding Marcus Nispel's Friday the 13th, now it looks as if we'll
be seeing something completely different when the film hits theaters February 13, 2009. Sources
tell us that Platinum Dunes shot additional scenes for New Line Cinema's remake, which follows a
group of young adults that find themselves going toe-to-toe with the infamous Jason Voorhees (Derek
Mears) at a cabin near Camp Crystal Lake. What exactly was shot is unknown, but we can confirm a
new (or possibly variant) ending was in fact filmed.
