width="1" height="1" //divpThe bosses of Royal Bank of Scotland yesterday told shareholders for the
first time that they were "sorry" for the plight of the Edinburgh-based bank which is likely to be
60%-owned by the government after a pound;20bn bail-out was endorsed by investors./ppAddressing
shareholders at a hastily convened meeting in Edinburgh, out-going chairman Sir Tom McKillop took
personal responsibility as he said he was "profoundly sorry" for the situation that had forced the
bank to accept the government rescue package./ppIn a candid address, McKillop, who will leave at
next year's annual meeting, made it clear that the "buck stops with me as chairman". /ppUntil
yesterday Sir Fred Goodwin, the chief executive, had refused to utter the word sorry. On his last
day in the job which will be taken over today by Stephen Hester, Goodwin responded to a question
from a former employee who is also a shareholder by saying that he was "extremely
sorry"./pp"Accountability has been allocated and fully accepted," said McKillop./ppShareholders
overwhelmingly backed the fund-raising package under which the government will underwrite a
pound;15bn share issue at 65p a share and buy pound;5bn of preference shares. The shares closed
yesterday at 46p, up 3.7p indicating that the government could end up with a 58% stake in the bank
unless the share price rises through 65p which might encourage existing investors to participate in
the cash call./ppIn his address to investors, McKillop refused to admit that the acquisition of
parts of Dutch bank ABN Amro at the height the credit crunch last year had caused the bank's
problems. But he admitted that the deal - the biggest financial services takeover of all time - had
"added to our difficulties"./pp"In retrospect that higher exposure to assets, which later became
very difficult to trade ... increased the short-term vulnerability of the group to the financial
crisis as it intensified this year," McKillop said./ppHe also admitted that the bank had been run
on too low a capital base - what he called an "efficient balance sheet" - for too long. "Had we
known the severe market dislocation and economic deterioration we would face, we would, of course,
have built up larger capital reserves earlier," said McKillop./ppThis was a point picked up by
shareholder Alan Jack who said a prudent bank should have build up a "buffer of capital". He
accused the bank of adopting a "gung-ho attitude"./ppThe bank had been forced into a
record-breaking pound;12bn rights issue in April to shore up its balance sheet, but the
deterioration in markets after that forced the government to devise its bank bail-out plan which
will now involve a further pound;20bn being raised. The bank's shares have collapsed. Worth
pound;60bn at its peak, RBS is now valued at a tenth of that./ppMcKillop was at pains to apologise
to employees and customers. "I am sorry about the very real financial and therefore human cost that
those who have invested in us now feel and recognise how seriously this has impacted shareholder
confidence in RBS," he said. /ppA former chief executive of AstraZeneca, McKillop said: "In over 40
years of my working life I have had many difficult working experiences but none like this./pp"The
challenges we must now address as an institution, as a country and indeed as part of the world's
financial system, are unprecedented," said McKillop./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px;

will read now. His sacking from TalkSport this week was a wrong and deeply worrying act, and it
makes me think Gaunt may have been right in one of the favourite riffs of his Sun column and radio
show: that Britain has gone barmy and is becoming a dictatorship of liberal opinion./ppThe systolic
readings of Gaunty, as he likes to be called, may be even more at risk from the revelation that a
commentator connected with this paper and the BBC - despised HQs of the PC revolution - is also
troubled by this week's public exposure of the membership list of the British National
party./ppDon't misunderstand this: I wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with any of them, and have
never agreed with anything said by presenter or party. But one of the most delicate judgments in
any society is where the line of acceptable behaviour should be drawn, and both of these cases
suggest that the boundary is now being marked in the ink of self-righteous idealism./ppThe brutal
removal of Gaunt has been overshadowed by the fuss over other broadcasting absences - Jonathan
Ross's push, John Sergeant's jump - but is far more significant. A broadcaster known to be
outspoken on a station that trades in outrageousness lost his rag, no more or less than he has done
a thousand times before, with a local councillor, whom he called a "Nazi" during a discussion about
children in care./ppGaunt says that he meant to say "health Nazi" but the distinction is
irrelevant. If there were ever libel proceedings the insult would be justified as "vulgar abuse". A
career could only be ended over such an innocuous exchange in a culture that had seriously lost its
nerve over freedom of expression./ppBut perhaps we have. Many of the people outed this week as BNP
members probably are Nazis, metaphorically or actually, but the revelation of their names and
addresses exposes the mess of our policies on tolerance. It is legal to belong to the party, or to
vote for them, but membership is proscribed for some professions (soldiers, police and prison
officers) yet not for others (doctors, nurses, teachers). Educational unions have called for the
restrictions to be widened but, if this were to happen, logic suggests that the BNP should be
banned, which would be controversial (and anti-democratic) but at least more coherent./ppAlthough
the outcry over Ross and Brand is largely responsible for Gaunt losing his job, it is a distraction
in this debate: no definition of free expression should include the right to invade people's
privacy for entertainment. But the Gaunt and BNP incidents raise the fundamental question of the
limits of free speech./ppThe point is that sacking shock jocks and demonising political parties are
cosmetic measures. Banning attitudes removes them from view, but not from existence. Any politician
who has campaigned in inner cities will tell you that both Labour and Tories have long had voters
who are, frankly, racist. The one advantage of the rise of the BNP was that it became easier to
measure, in elections, the numerical level of extremist opinion. But, now that the security of the
membership list has been breached, such rumblings will be harder to calculate./ppToday, with the
latest stage of the BBC inquiry into Granddaughtergate, we will discover if the risk has increased
that Rossy will suffer a Gaunty. The mood for removal from Radio 2 (but continuation on TV) seems
to be growing, and it would surprise me if he still has his current wireless slot in six
months./ppMany would be pleased by this outcome, as they would also cheer the dismissal of Gaunt
and the fact that we now know where BNP supporters live. But, taken together, these events suggest
an emergency, but cack-handed, sanitisation of attitudes - an emergency carpet-sweeping exercise
with a broom that hits some bits while missing others. A broadcaster loses his job for saying
"Nazi", while those who hold extremist views on immigration are allowed to teach children but not
go to war./ppThese ideological contradictions would make a good Gaunty phone-in, had he not become
a victim of the silly view that a society that looks and sounds nicer has actually become
nicer./pdiv style="float: left; margin-right: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;"ullia

width="1" height="1" //divpThe Arsenal captain, William Gallas, has launched an astonishing attack
on his young team-mates, claiming they are "not brave enough in battle" and revealing he had been
forced to step in to prevent players arguing during games. The France international also suggested
one of his more experienced colleagues, who he refused to name, had proved a disruptive influence
at the club on and off the pitch./ppThe outburst is particularly untimely with Arsenal, nine points
off the top of the Premier League having lost their fourth game of the season against Aston Villa
last Saturday, already rocked by confirmation that Theo Walcott will be absent for at least three
months after the winger underwent surgery on his right shoulder yesterday. Gallas suggested he had
grown tired of the drip-feed of criticism of his captaincy, initially sparked by his bizarre and
petulant sit-down protest at Birmingham City in February, though his words will have done little
for team harmony at the Emirates Stadium./pp"We have to understand that, to be champions, you have
to play big matches every weekend and fight," said Gallas. "We are coming up against teams who are
not scared to play football against us, who are not scared to take us on at our place and this is
becoming dangerous for Arsenal. We are not brave enough in battle. I think we need to be soldiers.
We have to be warriors. There are teams who can do it well against us and we have to be able to
face up to these attacks. That is how they [Arsenal's young players] will forge their character and
how they will get experience. Even though they've played a certain number of matches, they're still
young and still learning."/ppThe 31-year-old, whose own form has been patchy not least against
Villa, insisted he was speaking out because "there are things that can't be said and can't be
tolerated". He revealed the team had fractured at half-time in the recent Premier League game with
Tottenham Hotspur, with the score 1-1 at the time, though his most stinging criticism was levelled
at an unnamed team-mate whose attitude had shocked him. "There was a problem at half-time [against
Spurs]," he said. "The only thing that I could say at half-time was: 'Guys, we resolve these
problems after the match, not at half-time.'/pp"When, as captain, some players come up to you and
talk to you about a player ... complaining about him ... and then during the match you speak to
this player and the player in question insults us. There comes a time where we can no longer
comprehend how this can happen. I'm trying to defend myself a bit without giving names. Otherwise
I'm taking it all [the blame]. It's very frustrating, but I'm 31 and the player concerned is six
years younger than me." The players who fall into that bracket at the club include Robin van
Persie, the Dutch forward and something of a free spirit as an attacking force, as well as Emmanuel
Eboueacute; and Bacary Sagna. Yet Gallas' suggestion that the tete-a-tete had occurred during an
attacking phase of play may be revealing./ppArsegrave;ne Wenger was made aware of the comments
yesterday and, although Gallas is unlikely to be stripped of the captaincy, the Arsenal manager has
not been impressed with the outburst after a difficult few days. Wenger's decision to retain his
compatriot as skipper, rather than pass the armband to Cesc Fagrave;bregas, came as something of a
surprise over the summer./ppThe centre-half's outburst appears born of frustration that Arsenal,
well behind Chelsea and Liverpool in the league, may endure a fourth consecutive season without a
trophy. "I have to win something this year," he said. "Arsenal has to win something. Another season
without a trophy would be a kind of failure."/ppThe loss of Walcott represents a blow. Wenger said
he does not hold the Football Association responsible for the training injury sustained on Tuesday
at the Olympic stadium, with the club considering whether or not to seek compensation, via the FA's
insurers. Thankfully, the 19-year-old's career has not been threatened by this set-back./pp"There
is not concern about that," said the Arsenal manager. "Once the surgery is done and it is solid,
there is no concern at all for the future of Theo Walcott. Not at all."/pdiv style="float: left;
