pimg alt="Facebook Connect" src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/imgFacebookConnect.jpg" width="150"
height="175" /If the initial development race of Web 2.0 centered around "building a better social
network" then the next phase will certainly focus on extending the reach of existing social
networks beyond their current domain. How? By using the elements of the a
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/social_graph_concepts_and_issues.php"social graph/a as
the foundational components that will drive the social Web. Where we once focused on going to a
destination - particular social network to participate - we will now begin to carry components of
social networks along with us, wherever we go. In the next phase of the social Web, every site will
become social./p p align="right"emSponsor/embr /a

Open Strategy/a, and a
href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebook_connect_coming_soon_t.php"Facebook Connect/a
have all been rushing to take the lead in this next phase. Today, a
href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/01/technology/internet/01facebook.html?pagewanted=2_r=1partner=rssemc=rss"The
New York Times reports/a that Facebook has taken another step forward by delivering Connect
functionality to new crop of sites./p pWhile the first group of sites that were allowed to leverage
Connect - CBS The Insider, CNN The Forum, Connected Weddings, Global Grind, Govit, Indie GoGo,
MoveOn.org, and Red Bull - were a good test case, Facebook is stepping into a whole new realm with
its next round of sites - Discovery Channel, The San Francisco Chronicle, Geni, Hulu, and Digg.
It's a safe bet that Digg will be the most interesting test case to date./p h2What Does Facebook
Connect Do?/h2 pFacebook Connect proposes to make data and friend connections currently held within
the walled garden of Facebook accessible to other services. This has two distinct benefits, one for
the sites and one for Facebook./p pFor the participating sites, Facebook Connect provides more
social functionality without a great deal of additional development. A new user can opt to share
the profile information in Facebook instead of developing a new account. This gives the user access
to the site and its services without the tedium of developing yet another profile on yet another
site. In addition, users can use the relationship information in Facebook to connect to their
friends on the other services. In short, it makes the new partner site an extension of Facebook./p
pAnd that hits upon the distinct benefit for Facebook: more data. Before Connect, Facebook's
understanding of user behavior was relegated to what occurred on Facebook and, potentially, through
third-party Facebook apps. With Connect, Facebook will extend its reach exponentially. In so doing,
it will gather even more data on Facebook users, whether they're within the walled garden or not./p
h2Facebook Beacon, Part 2?/h2 pOne of Facebook's primary marketing concerns with Facebook Connect
has been to extend the value of its advertising-based revenue model while - obviously - avoiding
the a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/facebook_beacon_apology.php"debacle that was
Facebook Beacon/a. That has pushed Facebook to pursue a slow, methodical release of Connect,
proceeding with caution to avoid any similar gaffs./p pFor now, they have the luxury of time.
Facebook has continued to roll out their distributed social offering more quickly than the
competition. And no doubt, they're learning a few things along the way that will give them a
decided advantage over similar services. /p pBut can they turn that early lead into a decisive
victory?/p h2Adoption Is the Key/h2 pIf Facebook beats everyone else to the party, that doesn't
mean they've won the race. The true value for Facebook is getting users to adopt Facebook Connect
and extend their profiles to these external sites. Adoption will be the true deciding factor./p
pAnd that's why this new group of Facebook Connect sites will be interesting to watch. With the
first group, Facebook was able to prove the concept had merit. With this latest group, they will be
working to prove that users actually want to use the service. /p pWill Digg users be willing to
connect their profiles and begin shouting to their Facebook friends? Is there a great deal of
crossover between Facebook users and Discovery Channel? Will enough Facebook users watch the latest
SNL skit on Hulu to provide useful data? /p pIt's safe to assume that there is crossover between
Facebook and any number of sites. But, the question remains: will the population of users who opt
to use Connect be large enough to pay off? It's hard to say. We'll just have to wait and see how
Connect performs in the wild./p stronga

Web TV Wire -

Sling.com, the online video portal from the makers of the
Slingbox, is now open to the public, putting it in direct competition with the likes of Hulu and
Joost. Unfortunately, like so many other sites, it’s only open to U.S. citizens.
SlingMedia
SlingMedia is the company
responsible for the popular Slingbox device which allows you to broadcast a TV signal around your
house via the Internet. It’s also
recently launched the SlingCatcher, a set-top box to compete with the likes of AppleTV and
Roku.
Not content with managing market battles on two fronts, SlingMedia has recently opened its
Sling.com video portal up to the public, allowing users to
stream movies and TV programs for free in Flash video format.
Sling.com Portal
The selection of content on offer is impressive, with major networks and studios such as CBS,
NBC, Fox, Sony, Warner, and MGM offering their wares on the site. Sling is also a Hulu partner so will stream some of its
content.
As well as the big sources, Sling offers content from PBS, BBC America, as well as syndicating
Web video sites such as College Humor and Break.com. It makes for a site with a nice mix between
short clips and longer, professionally made videos.
Slingbox Compatible
The big advantage Sling.com has over its competitors is the Slingbox itself. You can stream
content directly from any Slingbox you own to your browser, and watch it directly. When signed
into your user account, the site automatically detects any box linked.
However, not everything is peachy. For starters, live streaming is only available on computers
running Windows, although a Mac version is promised soon. But much worse than that is the fact
that once again, international viewers are once again being treated as second-class citizens.
Territorial Rights Licensing… Again
It feels like I’ve mentioned this on numerous different occasions, probably
because I have. But it just makes no sense to
ban the rest of the world from watching online video content. America may run the world these
days, but the Internet is meant to be a global phenomenon supposed to make the world a smaller
place.
What it means is that for me, Joost beats any of the
other multi-source, multi-platform video sites on the Internet right now. Not because the content
is brilliant, or the technology and usability is way ahead of its competitors, but purely because
I, as a British person, can watch it. That’s of the utmost importance.
Conclusions
Sling.com is a nice looking portal that does add to the range and breadth of video sites on the
Internet. But Hulu beats it for
content, and Joost
beats it for offering anyone outside of the U.S. a chance to actually take part.

Because Intel earnings will evaporate in 2 hours if these
notebooks popularity continues to rise. I love them though and I hear that over 5 million
have been sold so far. I have 3 of those, one with XP, one with Linux and one with Mac (an Asus
turned into a Mac). My 350 euro Asus works as well as the MacBook Air that cost me $1800. It is
very small that´s true and I only use it in conferences, planes, or public places but
it´s battery life beats any Mac I know. On the negative side the ethernet doesn´t
work, sound only works with Bluetooth and the sleep functions that works so well in Macs
doesn´t work in the Asus Hackingtosh. I also greatly enjoy the Magalhaes, the Portuguese
notebook that competes with the OLPC another favorite.

//centerbr / pThe video streaming service that fell short of almost everyone's expectations may be
back with a vengeance. You may remember their technical problems, lack of content and not extremely
accessible service. Now they have released an iPhone app that is pretty slick and offers quick
access to their library of 46,000 plus videos. I have downloaded it myself and it only takes about
two taps minimum to get to a popular show or episode. It is very quick and the video quality is
high. You may occasionally see some stuttering but it did not happen enough for me to be unhappy.
What did dampen the smile on my face was the requirement for Wi-Fi. That's right it won't work over
EDGE or 3G, you must be connected to Wi-Fi. There are some other failures in the interface as they
break some design conventions Apple set forth and fail to implement common sense features like
incremental find. Overall though the experience is simple, quick and if you just want to watch
content quickly, nothing beats free. (a

Third album, following 2006's 'Under The Iron Sea', from the hugely successful Brit pop-rock stars
whose piano-led, emotive and melancholy songs have placed them in the same bracket as fellow
travellers Coldplay and Snow Patrol. On 'Perfect Symmetry' they take some chances with their sound,
experimenting with synthesizers and more aggressive beats such as those to be heard on the

Interestingly enough, a lot of the gripes you readers had with the original Rock Band were
addressed by Activision in the rivaling Guitar Hero: World Tour (cymbals, anyone?), but we're
pretty sure the picky ones out there still have something to complain about. And seriously, when
dropping upwards of $180 to $190 for the full-on band kit, you absolutely have a right to nitpick.
Now that you've hopefully rocked through a few set lists, how are you enjoying things? Are the
revamped / new instruments to your liking? Are the sensors accurate enough? Do you wish there was a
freestyle mode in order to give real drummers free reign over what beats they play? Is your
equipment holding up under the intense pressure of rockin' it all night long? Grab a mic and spit
your feelings (in rhyme or prose, whatever) below.

Quote: Microsoft is quietly developing a software rasterizer that allows x86 processors to render
DirectX 10 graphics—and some early performance tests might surprise
you. According to an article on MSDN, the Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform (WARP) will ship as part of
Windows 7, and a beta version is already available in the November 2008 DirectX development
toolkit.
WARP will come in handy in a number of cases, Microsoft writes, like when a user's graphics card is
broken or the graphics driver malfunctions. The company is also targeting casual gamers who want
prettier graphics than what their GPU (or integrated graphics hardware) might be able to deliver:
Games have simple rendering requirements but also want the ability to use impressive visual effects
that can be hardware accelerated. The majority of the best selling game titles for Windows are
either simulations or casual games, neither of which requires high performance graphics, but both
styles of games greatly benefit from modern shader based graphics and the ability to scale on
hardware if present. Techreport
