pimg src="http://www.readwriteweb.com/images/twitter-logosmall.jpg" width="150" height="36" / It's
been a while since we last reported on a href="http://twitter.com"Twitter/a. The service hasn't
been experiencing any of its previous turbulence and has begun to shed its spotty reputation for
service uptime. While the site's reliability has improved, one functionality has remained on the
"things that are broken on Twitter" list: IM functionality. Previous IM functionality was spotty at
best, but folks like Robert Scoble found this feature to be one of the best ways to manage Twitter.
Tonight the company has taken the time to clear things up about the status and future of IM
functionality on Twitter./p p align="right"emSponsor/embr /a

//a/p h2Indefinite Suspension/h2 pThe a
href="http://status.twitter.com/post/53978711/im-not-coming-soon"future of IM functionality on
Twitter/a is blurry at best. What is clear is that this feature has been put on hold indefinitely.
The company feels that this feature will be much better to manage and provide better stability to
users if it were built from the ground up. However,/p pemblockquote"Based on our analysis, the
cost-to-benefit for IM for the most users is not as high as some other things--so it will be a
while before we tackle it. Like any budget (in this case, the budget of our limited engineering
time), tough calls need to be made--especially in these times. And while we don't expect everyone
to agree with this decision, we at least want to be straightforward with you."/blockquote/em/p h2We
Doubt It/h2 pWe appreciate Twitter being straightforward about the feature. While we're a little
disappointed to see that it won't be officially from Twitter, the functionality is still capable of
being implemented by third party developers. Twitter recommends checking out a
href="http://excla.im/"Excla.im/a, a jabber bot IM service that allows you to update your Twitter
status. However, Excla.im does not allow you to see your friends updates (yet). Just don't expect
to see IM functionality back before the end of the year, or maybe even next spring./p stronga

Periodically, the pilot wished he had company. There were some things that were just more
enjoyable with another being around. Besides the obvious, there was chess. The ship’s
helpful AI, such a benefit when it came to the obvious, just didn’t cut it at chess. Not
that it was stupid, of course. It was quite exactly the opposite.
“You’re a thrice-damned son of a bitch.” The pilot chucked one of his pawns at
the holo he’d picked for the ship to wear when they played chess. Only certain parts of the
form were dense enough to interact with objects. The pawn shot harmlessly through the faintly
shimmering torso and clattered unfulfillingly on the deck. The pilot began to sulk. “Damn
sonofabitch bastard.”
“Would you have preferred the pawn to hit me? If this is your preference, I can generate
solidity at whichever part you wish to next target.” The ship, through the holo’s
face, displayed the practised concern of a head waiter dealing with a difficult customer. The
face then lit with a degree of helpfulness. “I also could display pain or discomfort when
struck, if you’d like.” The pilot wondered if there was an algorithm to degrees of
helpfulness.
“What I would like you to do is stop letting me win.” He paused, as though a computer
needed a moment of contemplation. “I left my king wide open, just there for you to take.
But you didn’t. You messed around with the same dumb, obvious moves you’ve been
making since the first time we played and you won.”
The ship didn’t say anything. It seemed to think he wasn’t quite done. The pilot
found that he wasn’t.
“I mean, if you’re doing this because you think I’d prefer it then you’re
off your deck. Letting me win like that only reminds me how easy it’d be for you to kick my
ass at this game.”
The ship remained quiet.
For the briefest moment, the pilot worried he’d hurt the ship’s feelings.
“Listen—” he began. The holo shook its head.
“No, it is all right. You have a very valid point. I thought you would prefer to win, but I
did not factor that you might also like to work for the win.” The pilot was a little
startled.
“Yeah, that’s—that’s pretty much it.”
“I had not taken into consideration that your kind reveres the concept of hardship and
looks down on success unless there is at least a token struggle in achieving it.”
“I just didn’t want you to make it so easy.”
“I understand.”
The pilot shifted in his chair uncomfortably. He wondered about the connections being made in
that giant, unfathomable brain. He wished he had company.

Remember that excited feeling you got when you first killed a monster in the original Diablo?
How you knew that this was going to be a game that ate a great deal of your life? And then Diablo
II came out, and it was pretty much the same feeling as Diablo I, only updated for the computer
systesm of the day, somehow maintaining the same level of excitement and fun as the original? Well
I've just gotten a chance to play through a half hour of Diablo III, and damn if I don't have that
same giddy feeling all over again.
Sure, the core concepts remain exactly the same as they did in the original game. You play a
character that clicks their way through levels, hacking, slashing, and spellcasting your way
through hordes of enemies. You still upgrade your equipment, quaff potions, and identify magic
items along the way. In essence it is the same game we've been playing and loving since the very
start, only updated to the point where we can look at it on today's systems and still go "Damn,
this is an amazing game."
The demo starts off by allowing me to select a class. Currently available are male and female
versions of both the Witch Doctor and Barbarian, as well as the female Wizard, with the currently
incomplete male unable to be selected. I went with the Wizard, partly because of my affinity with
the mage class but mostly because I like to play as girls.
I begin in a burnt out village of Tristam, overrun with undead. Entering the village proper the
first sight I see is a person trying to crawl out of a cellar doorway. Approaching them causes them
to be yanked inside with a scream that continues as blood splashes out of the opening onto the
ground. Oh yes, things are pretty ****ed up round here.
Soon you come across your first enemies, your basic zombies. The power mapping is pretty simple.
You have a standard hotbar numbered 1-9, a left button power, and a right button power that can be
swapped on the fly with the tab key. I had an electrical melee attack on my left button and magic
missile on the right, at least until I got the awesome disintegration ray at level 2.
I come across a wounded soldier laying near an open crypt who warns me....somehow the fires have
awoken him - The Skeleton King lives again. Feeling uppity, I plunge into the depths of the
dungeon, ready to click some ass.
The monsters come in waves, dying with that characteristically satisfying feel of all Diablo games.
They do an excellent job of making you feel like you're causing the damage directly. These aren't
spell effects and death animations - these are beams of magical energy shooting from your hands,
committing your enemies to nothingness. As I fight through hordes of skeletons, they drop reddish
heart containers, and running over them replenishes my heath. There are still potions in the game
of course...the pickups just add to the action a bit.
Eventually I get my first rune. The rune system in Diablo III allows you to slot stones you find
into powers in order to increase their effects in specific ways. The minor power rune I pickup adds
a bit more damage to my disintegration ray, whereas a multi-hit rune might very well split the beam
into multiples. The developers have not only had to create the powers for each class, but determine
how each rune you can pick up effects said powers. Each run has a cosmetic as well as functional
effect on each power. It's a very ambitious system that I cannot wait to see more of.
At know point during my 3-level dungeon descent do I worry about the bright colors ruining my
experience. It's still moody and pretty dark. The spell effects, on the other hand, are vibrant and
colorful, and the death animations for the creatures I kill seem to vary depending on the power I
use. Disintegrate actually disintegrates my enemies. No caned death animations here.
Along with the requisite zombies and skeletons I run into a few bigger creatures, like giant,
bloated, headless bodies that explode in a cascade of maggots as they die, with several groups of
the worms attacking you, perhaps a bit miffed that you destroyed their home.
Eventually I descend to the final level, where the skeleton king rises in spectacular fashion.
Gates all around him open, the area is flooded with undead, and my disintegrate ray quickly runs
out of mana, leaving me relatively defenseless and definitely dead. Oh well.
When I first saw Diablo III in action, my initial thought was, "How is this different?" Now, having
played the game I realize that it isn't all that different, and it doesn't really have to be. It's
got upgraded graphics, a new leveling system, and some new classes, but this is still Diablo, and
that has never been a bad thing. If it was the sort of game we got a new installment of every year
than it would certainly be less impressive, but with it being seven years since we've entered this
world, familiarity is definitely a good thing.

Look kids, it's the cast of the hit internet series The Guild! In case you've not heard of The
Guild, it's a hysterically funny look at a group of MMO players and how they react when things get
a bit too real. The lovely red-haired woman there is Felicia Day, who Buffy fans may remember as
someone only Buffy fans would remember. She plays the guild's healer, Codex, who one day gets a
surprise visit from Sandeep Parikh, the warlock who assumes the two have hit it off and decides to
move in with her. If you've ever been in an MMO guild you know these people, from the inattentive
mother Clara (far left) to the young, "spirited" player Bladezz, played by Vincent Caso there on
the far right. Vincent...I am so sorry I called you a dick today. I really meant your character, I
swear. You're a lovely man. Anyway, check
out the show's website and find out what happens when a guild stops being real and starts
getting...really real.

A lot of criticism has been aimed at venture capitalists the last few days. The VCs are
telling their portfolio companies to get ahead of the curve and conserve
cash right now, and companies are starting to take
their advice.
The criticism is coming from people who don’t understand that the world has changed in the
last week and that companies need to change with it. And so they’re asking why VCs waited
until now to tell everyone to conserve cash. Others are saying the boom is the VCs fault, and for
them to lecture companies on conserving cash is ironic.
Fred Wilson wrote about
this issue today and says VCs have a responsibility to give their best advice to their portfolio
companies: “It’s all about acting responsibly and making sure we all survive to
fight another day.”
But he doesn’t address the issue head on. I will. What we’re talking about is the
goal of profit maximization, which is what every for profit business needs to aim for or go out
of business. In the good times, that means growing intelligently. In the bad, it means maximizing
your chances of survival.
Irrational Argument No. 1: The VCs Made This Happen
First, the downturn has nothing to do with the venture capitalists (in fact, it has nothing to do
with Silicon Valley, this time). They have one job: generate the best return they legally can
from their investors’ money. In boom times deals get competitive and VCs make independent
decisions on what deals to bid for. Companies also have to pay more for people, resources, office
space and advertising in boom times, which means they spend more money and have to raise more
money. If you think venture capitalists are being irresponsible (or worse, evil) by investing
money in those companies that they think are good bets, you’re just not getting how the
whole system works.
Let me put it this way - if VCs ignored the economy and always invested super conservatively so
that no one could accuse them of being irresponsible, they’d go out of business after their
first fund failed to return capital to investors.
Irrational Argument No. 2: VCs Should Have Told Companies To Conserve Cash All
Along
This is another argument that ignores the fact that people try to adapt to a changing world. At
all times companies need to profit maximize. That means maximizing revenue and minimizing costs.
Those goals are not aligned, however. Sometimes a company spends money on research and
development to create future revenue streams. How much they spend is based on their own rational
decisions on their financial health, the state of the economy, and their projections for the
demand of a new product.
In good times, when core businesses are relatively safe, it makes sense to expand by hiring new
people and developing new products. Or spending money on advertising and PR.
When times are tough, companies have to change strategies. They’re still maximizing
profits, but they need to plan for tighter capital markets (really important to unprofitable
startups) and harder revenue as advertising and other spending decreases.
Just like a bear in the woods (I imagine) has to slow its activity in the Winter as food supplies
dwindle, startups need to go into cash conservation mode to increase their chances of survival
when the market slows. They need to be prepared for a hit in revenue, and they know they
can’t necessarily go to the capital markets to get money to stay in business.
But to argue that a company should always cut costs to the bare minimum is the same thing as
asking that bear to act like it’s Winter in the Spring, because someday Winter is going to
happen. All you end up with is a dead bear.

So I just got my iPod touch and I can't for the life of me figure out if there's a "sleep" mode,
you know, where you can tell it to turn off after an hour of being on. I like to listen when I go
to sleep, but if it's on all night, it actually keeps me from sleeping well. I feel totally dumb
cause I can't seem to figure this out!
Any suggestions?

I have an Aluminum iMac with a nearly full 320gb internal drive.
What I need is one external drive to provide additional storage space, and a second larger drive to
backup the other two via Time Machine - I hope Time Machine is capable of doing this, but I don't
know if it can.
Ideally, I would purchase a dual drive enclosure, a 500gb drive for additional storage, and a large
1TB drive to backup the internal drive on the iMac AND the 500gb drive.
Can I do this with this particular OWC firewire enclosure?
http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other...g/MEFW924AL2K/
OWC doesn't mention anything about being Time Machine Compatible...Do I have anything to worry
about here or are there better solutions?

The iPhone will start selling at Walmart
November 15th! Â
This will boost iPhone sales exponentially.
Smart move by Apple.  Smart move by Walmart.  Just imagine
all those non-Internet buying, non-apple store shopping people seeing this amazing phone in stock
at their favorite store. The iPhone will now be advertised to all the different types of buyers
Walmart has. Â And because Walmart sells so many different things, this variety is
enormous. Â The timing is also perfect because Black Friday is coming up and christmas
shoppers will snag this up like crazy.
Although the iPhone is being sold at other nation wide
stores like Best Buy Walmart will have the most affect on actual iPhone sales. But then again
there are other things to consider. Â Walmart will only allow you to buy the phone if
you activate it before you exit the store. Â And, of course… our currently
failing world economy.

Media Matters for America -
1 days and 1 hours ago
On the October 10 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, host Bill O'Reilly purported
to defend his false October 8 assertion -- documented by Media Matters for America -- that Sen. Barack
Obama did not cast a vote on a Senate amendment denouncing both an ad by MoveOn.org that targeted
Gen. David Petraeus and "Swift Boat" attacks on Sen. John Kerry (D-MA). O'Reilly claimed that in
his October 8 remarks, he was not referring to an amendment sponsored by Sen. Barbara Boxer
(D-CA), which Obama voted for, but rather to an amendment "sponsored by [Sen.] John Cornyn [R-TX]
that also condemned MoveOn," which Obama did not vote on. But on October 8, O'Reilly explicitly
said that the amendment Obama did not vote on was one that condemned both the MoveOn Petraeus ad
and "the Swift Boating of Kerry." While both amendments condemned the MoveOn Petraeus ad, the
Cornyn amendment did not condemn the Swift Boat attacks, while the Boxer amendment -- which,
again, Obama voted for -- did.
On the October 10 broadcast, responding to the Media Matters item noting his October 8
falsehood, O'Reilly said: "[Media Matters for America CEO David] Brock tells his
Kool-Aid drinking audience that Barack did vote for an amendment sponsored by Barbara Boxer that
denounced MoveOn and attacks on John Kerry. What Brock does not tell his Kool-Aid drinking
audience is that Obama refused to vote on another Senate amendment, this one sponsored by John
Cornyn that also condemned MoveOn. That was the vote I was referring to." He continued: "Now, I
should have pointed out there were two amendments. Obama did vote for the Boxer amendment, but he
did not vote on the Cornyn amendment. So that's my fault. I should have been clearer on that, but
I am not a liar, and Brock is, in addition to being a pinhead."
But during his October 8 radio show, O'Reilly said: "You know, we did some research into
[Obama's] vote on MoveOn. MoveOn ran the Petraeus ad. They had a vote in the Senate condemning
that action, along with -- and I did not know this -- condemning the Swift Boating of Kerry."
O'Reilly then said, "It was in the same amendment -- same amendment -- that, you know, when you
challenge someone's patriotism, that is wrong. Obama did not vote."
However, of the two measures, only the Boxer amendment condemned both "the Petraeus ad" and the
"Swift Boating of Kerry." As Media Matters has documented, Obama did, in fact,
vote for the Boxer amendment condemning the Petraeus ad, as well as other attacks on past and
present members of the military, including Kerry. From the Boxer amendment to the National
Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008:
(4) In 2004, a Senator from Massachusetts who is a Vietnam veteran and the recipient of a Silver
Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, and three Purple Hearts, was personally attacked and accused of
dishonoring his country.
(5) This attack was aptly described by a Senator and Vietnam veteran as ''dishonest and
dishonorable.''
(6) On September 10, 2007, an advertisement in the New York Times was an unwarranted personal
attack on General Petraeus; who is honorably leading our Armed Forces in Iraq and carrying out
the mission assigned to him by the President of the United States.
In contrast to the Boxer amendment, Cornyn's amendment makes no reference to Kerry or the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth.
The Cornyn amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008 in full:
At the end of subtitle E of title X, add the following:
SEC. 1070. SENSE OF SENATE ON GENERAL DAVID PETRAEUS.
(a) FINDINGS. -- The Senate makes the following findings:
(1) The Senate unanimously confirmed General David H. Petraeus as Commanding General,
Multi-National Force-Iraq, by a vote of 81-0 on January 26, 2007.
(2) General Petraeus graduated first in his class at the United States Army Command and General
Staff College.
(3) General Petraeus earned Masters of Public Administration and Doctoral degrees in
international relations from Princeton University.
(4) General Petraeus has served multiple combat tours in Iraq, including command of the 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault) during combat operations throughout the first year of Operation
Iraqi Freedom, which tours included both major combat operations and subsequent stability and
support operations.
(5) General Petraeus supervised the development and crafting of the United States Army and Marine
Corps counterinsurgency manual based in large measure on his combat experience in Iraq, scholarly
study, and other professional experiences.
(6) General Petraeus has taken a solemn oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United
States of America.
(7) During his 35-year career, General Petraeus has amassed a distinguished and unvarnished
record of military service to the United States as recognized by his receipt of a Defense
Distinguished Service Medal, two Distinguished Service Medals, two Defense Superior Service
Medals, four Legions of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal for valor, the State Department Superior
Honor Award, the NATO Meritorious Service Medal, and other awards and medals.
(8) A recent attack through a full-page advertisement in the New York Times by the liberal
activist group, Moveon.org, impugns the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all the
members of the United States Armed Forces.
(b) SENSE OF THE SENATE. -- It is the sense of the Senate --
(1) to reaffirm its support for all the men and women of the United States Armed Forces,
including General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq;
(2) to strongly condemn any effort to attack the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all
the members of the United States Armed Forces; and
(3) to specifically repudiate the unwarranted personal attack on General Petraeus by the liberal
activist group Moveon.org.
From the October 10 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:
O'REILLY: Time now for "Pinheads and Patriots." Unfortunately, we don't have a patriot tonight
because we have two pinheads. First, the liars at Media Matters are at it again. This
man, David Brock puts out daily deceit on the Internet, and the latest is this quote: "O'Reilly
falsely claimed Obama did not vote to condemn attacks on Petraeus and Kerry," unquote. Brock
tells his Kool-Aid drinking audience that Barack did vote for an amendment sponsored by Barbara
Boxer that denounced MoveOn and attacks on John Kerry.
What Brock does not tell his Kool-Aid drinking audience is that Obama refused to vote on another
Senate amendment, this one sponsored by John Cornyn that also condemned MoveOn. That was the vote
I was referring to, and Brock knew it, but Brock is a weasel and a liar, and he always does this.
Now, I should have pointed out there were two amendments. Obama did vote for the Boxer amendment,
but he did not vote on the Cornyn amendment. So that's my fault. I should have been clearer on
that, but I am not a liar, and Brock is, in addition to being a pinhead.
