pThe overall panic that has taken hold of the financial markets made its way to online advertising
yesterday with the release of the Interactive Advertising Bureau's third-quarter online ad figures:
online advertising up only 2% quarter-to-quarter and 11% year-over-year. But before you scramble to
lower all of your estimates once again, keep in mind that the third quarter and October are likely
to have been skewed heavily by the elections. While I wouldn't suggest that online behaves
completely like TV, it is a long-known fact that political advertising crowds out other advertisers
and tends to put pressure on pricing.nbsp; br / br / The general news and political sites have
enjoyed a run-up in traffic (with questions as to its sustainability post election) that created
enormous ad inventory. Economic theory will tell you that an increase in supply (i.e. ad inventory)
coupled with unchanged, or even lessened demand (i.e. advertisers) can only be cleared by lower
pricing. While I'm not feeling particularly optimistic about anything right now, I would caution
the market to hold back on drawing any conclusions about online ad pricing or ad trends until we
get past the election season. While trends are likely still weakening, the bottom is far from
falling out. /p p iLauren Rich Fine is ContentNext's research director/i /p p!-- iMark Logic

pa href="http://gigaomnimedia.com/" title="Gigaomni Media"Gigaomni Media/a (GOM), the parent
company of the popular network of tech sites including Gigaom, is parting ways with its long time
ad partner a href="http://www.federatedmedia.net/" title="Federated Media"Federated Media/a, and
moving to a more enterprise-focused a href="http://www.idgtechnetwork.com/" title="IDG
TechNetwork"IDG TechNetwork/a, IDG's tech ad network, we have learned and confirmed from the two
companies. The new deal with IDG is for all CPM-based online advertising across GOM's network of
seven sites, and the company will still sell events and online sponsorships directly on its own. /p
p While this is not a significant monetary setback for Federated, it does point to what the John
Battelle-founded online-ad company is giving up as it continues to scale: Its focus has been on
large-scale national advertisers and creating both general and custom programs with them, as
opposed to the more 'intimate" sells required for enterprise-focused vendors that GOM attracts. FM
has a big-brand focus, for most part, and beyond its early start with tech sites, it has now moved
into all kinds of other verticals like parenting, food, graphic arts, small business and others. /p
p Gigaom founder Om Malik has a href="http://gigaom.com/2007/06/22/on-the-microsoft-ad-campaign/"
title="previously publicly disagreed"previously publicly disagreed/a with some aspects of FM's
"conversational marketing" approach with some tech advertisers. And while that did lead to some
tension last year, I spoke to both Chas Edwards, Publisher Chief Revenue Officer of FM, and Paul
Walborsky, CEO of GOM, and both reiterated that this parting was amicable, and of course, there are
too many friendships at stake here. /p p For GOM, this new move comes after its biggish $4.5
million third round of funding that it announced last month. In recent months it has also acquired
two blogs, jkOntheRun and TheAppleBlog, and appointed a new CEO. For IDG, this is a high-profile
blog media company to bring into its fold. Its ad network was launched earlier this year, and had

title="Yahoo re-tooled Kelkoo's Grenoble, France, HQ"Yahoo re-tooled Kelkoo's Grenoble, France,

million euros" - that means Yahoo makes a loss of at least 375 million ($472 million) euros (not
including any profits in made in that time, of course). Chappaz said: "The difference is the price
of management incompetence that led Yahoo's (stock price to fall) below $9." /p p Never heard of
Jamplant? You're not alone. Chappaz said it's a new investment unit created by the founders of that

Usually when we're talking about Nokia and patents, a mention of Qualcomm can't be far behind. This
time however, we're looking at something entirely less boring, fascinating even: ultra-sound
sensors that detect hand gestures in the air in front of the device. Now the stretch. Nokia's chief
designer, Alastair Curtis, was asked at a recent cocktail party why Nokia's N-series of multimedia
devices have yet to see a multi-touch interface, Curtis replied, "We've not launched what we think
is right for N-series in a touch product. You'll see in the coming months, years... what we feel is
right." Curtis then elaborated, "Much as I'm talking to you now with gestures." Hmm. Ok Alastair,
if such devices are in the chute, as long as they don't resemble the Palm V-series... we're
cool.
[Thanks, Pdexter]

pApple (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=AAPL" class="ticker"
title="AAPL"NSDQ: AAPL/a) is bundling a form of copyright protection software into new MacBooks
that has a href="http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8472731" title="some
buyers"some buyers/a up in arms. Called High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP), the
technology prevents MacBook owners from playing movies they've purchased through iTunes on many
external monitors, TVs or projectors—meaning they're stuck watching flicks
they've paid for on much smaller screens. /p p HDCP is designed to prevent film piracy by blocking
the connection between a computer and a copying device (like a DVR). The problem is that legitimate
devices like TVs—particularly older units—also get blocked
in the process. It also doesn't help that manufacturers like Apple, a

and a href="http://review.zdnet.com/product/desktops/sony-vaio-rc310g/31929422" title="Sony"Sony/a
aren't forthcoming about how they're adding the technology to products. Even Microsoft's Vista and
Windows Media Center have varying degrees of HDCP compliance.nbsp; /p p a
href="http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/11/apple-adds-copy.html" title="Wired says"Wired says/a
Intel bowed the technology back in 2001, but Apple began quietly embedding it in new MacBooks this
year as a way to appease Hollywood studios wary of licensing content to iTunes. Since iTunes files
get downloaded right to a user's hard drive, a film could feasibly be burned to a DVD and recopied
ad nauseum. Analysts say that's why the iTunes movie library is anemic in comparison to the
libraries of Netflix (a href="http://finance.paidcontent.org/paidcontent?Page=QUOTETicker=NFLX"
class="ticker" title="NFLX"NSDQ: NFLX/a) or Vudu—which don't let users store
the files. Apple hasn't released any statements addressing the issue, but it's not alone /p piMark

so it starts again: The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is planning to file for arbitration against
the Alliance of Motion Picture Television Producers (AMPTP), alleging that the producers are not
complying with the new contract that was negotiated after a prolonged strike during the winter of
2007-08. The full WGA a href="http://www.wga.org/content/default.aspx?id=3384" title="more to
come"statement is here/a. /p p The points in WGA's new complaint: br / -- That the media companies
part of AMPTP are not paying residuals for writers' work that is reused on new media. Of course
this was the main issue of the WGA strike. br / -- WGA is "embarking on an aggressive contract
enforcement program—including legal action—to ensure that
the AMPTP companies make good on their obligations," it says. br / -- WGA says that its residual
agreement with media companies covered feature films after July 1, 1971, and TV programs produced
after 1977. It now says that "the companies have reneged on this agreement and are taking the
position that bonly programs produced after February 13, 2008 are covered by the new provision.
This may be their deal with the DGA, but that was never our agreement/b." AMPTP and DGA came to an
agreement after the WGA agreement was struck. br / -- "Our tracking has shown that episodes are
staying on websites blonger than the 17-day initial window/b called for in the contract. This
triggers the payment of a residual, but so far we've seen nothing," said David Young, executive
director of the WGAW. /p p With the economy in shambles, any other stoppage in work would be
devastating for the entertainment community. Also, with online revenues for media/entertainment
companies also being affected with the economy, don't expect them to start paying more than
absolutely necessary at this point, and they may even try to figure out workarounds if they can. /p
