Here's a cool story I came across today. How did the makers of Iron Man put together that
montage detailing the rise of Tony Stark, Obadiah Stane, and Stark Industries? Apparently they did
it at least in part by looking for nifty photos on the internet.
Jeremy Keith is "just" a web designer with a website and a Flickr account. This week, he posted a
fun account of how team Iron Man found one
of his Flickr photos -- a picture of his friend in NASA's Vehicle Assembly Building -- decided they
wanted to use it, and set about getting his permission. The best part: he ignored them for
weeks. But apparently they really liked the photo, and hounded him for it. The second best
part: they didn't know it was a photo taken in one of NASA's most famous facilities -- which is
obviously a great fit for the film's subject matter. They thought it was "just some warehouse or
something."
Anyway, good story, and I didn't see it around the movie blogs, so there you go. People do insane
things for internet fame, but sometimes it just happens by accident, after a fashion. Remember this
next time you put up a photo album and make it public.
Finally, someone at
the Punisher: War Zone premiere asked
Lexi Alexander the big question -- what the hell
was all that "taking your name off the film" talk? Give a hand to SciFi Wire for doing so.
Alexander's answer managed to confirm and deny the post-ComicCon drama that surrounded
Punisher: War Zone. "No, no, I never was going to take my name off the film. Let me say
this. Harry Knowles [of Ain't It Cool News] is one of the greatest people I know. He's a great
supporter of mine. I'm his biggest fan, not because he supports filmmakers, [but] because I think
he fights for film ... I think in this case, what happened is when the first trailers came out, I
think he knew and he's been told there was kind of trouble. So he wrote, "F--k, they should have
just let her do it, and she was pushed aside." [That is] true. He did write the right thing, and he
stood up for me and for this film. I think that each Internet site that took it on brought it to a
new level ... [What Knowles wrote] really is the correct thing. I was never fired, and I never
wanted to take my name off. "
What Knowles wrote (if I have the right piece) was this: "Lexi Alexander has been kicked to the
curb -- part of that treatment was her "honeymoon" from Comic Con. However, there's more totally
awesome wedding gifts that Lionsgate has given the blushing bride. She's off the movie and wrapped
up in a non-disclosure clause - so we won't be hearing from her anytime soon, UNLESS THINGS CHANGE
RADICALLY." That explains the deafening silence -- though I'm curious how one can be "pushed
aside," yet remain unfired. However that works, it's clear Alexander kicked ass, made the
Punisher she wanted, and is getting rave reviews from the film geeks for her trouble.
There's nothing like a happy ending.
Prepare yourself - this much testosterone may be bad for your health.
Otherwise, enjoy!
At first, Zeck was just mixed in with other cover artists. Right from the get go, though, his
covers were extremely dynamic with interesting angles and layouts.
Then. however, Zeck began his most famous stretch of covers, drawing the covers for issues
#37-57, with only one John Byrne cover (for #50) mixed in.
As you can see, almost all his covers are striking in either one of two ways - either they are
dynamic action shots or they are dramatic looking cool poses.
There are a few slight duds mixed in there, of course (the cover for #50 stands out, I believe,
in a negative sense - it does not seem all that dramatic for a 50th issue), but for the most
part, he was on top of things every month.
During this time, he even helped launch a new G.I. Joe title - G.I. Joe Special Missions, where
his action covers were definitely warranted…
Some of the later Special Missions covers seem a bit on the rough side, but still, very cool
covers.
Zeck also did the cover for one of the G.I. Joe Yearbooks…
Zeck actually stayed on the covers of the main book for nine issues past #57, but man, the change
in the book’s direction did not suit Zeck’s style at ALL.
An armored Cobra Commander? A guy in a Hawkman get-up? Some pirate guy on a hovercraft? Zeck did
what he could, but this was no longer his wheelhouse…
The exception, of course, is this three-parter where Zeck got to draw what he drew best - dynamic
military action scenes…
#61, in particular, is one of the best covers he did on the book.
But then it was back to the sillier plots…
When Zeck is drawing stuff in outer space - you know you’ve gone too far.
He got one last cool cover and he was done with the book, after forty-four awesome covers!

strongproyectos poco convencionales/strong.

Bernard Freydberg, Philosophy and Comedy: Aristophanes, Logos, and Eros. Bloomington: Indiana
University Press, 2008, 235p. Isbn Paperback: 9780253219701 Isbn Hardback: 9780253351067Recension
par James Brusuelas (California State University at Los Angeles) dans Bryn Mawr Classical Review:
2008.12.04 Présentation de l'éditeur: Aristophanes' comedies have stood the test of
time as some of the greatest comic literature ever produced. While there have been numerous
commentaries on Aristophanes and his world, until now there has been no systematic philosophical
treatment of his comedies. In Philosophy and Comedy, Bernard Freydberg illuminates the
philosophical insights in Aristophanes' texts by presenting close readings of Clouds, Wasps,
Assemblywomen, and Lysistrata, addressing their comic genius at the same time. Freydberg challenges
notions that philosophy is best served by a tragic disposition and arrives at a new assessment of
the philosophical importance of comedy. [...]

they used to, but the internal workings are entirely new. There are too many changes for them all

archive editing dialog.
I am prone to fits of lust over really, really beautiful books, and no one gets me lustier faster
than Sunday Press, publishers of the gigantic, marvellous "Little Nemo: Splendid Sundays"
collections. These books collect the Sunday Little Nemo comics of Winsor McCay, a surrealist
watercolor genius whose weekly strips were lush, gigantic paintings that took us through the
dreamscape of Little Nemo, a charming and enigmatic boy living in turn-of-the-century America. And
now there's a second volume: "Little Nemo in Slumberland, Many More Splendid Sundays." I grew up
seeing the Little Nemo strips reproduced in "large-format" hardcovers, typically 8.5x11, and I
confess that I didn't really get what the fuss was about. The strips were small and smudgy, the
type spidery and illegible. Then I saw the first Sunday Press collection, "So Many Splendid
Sundays," and I experienced enlightenment. Publisher Peter Maresca has scanned, cleaned up and
reproduced his favorite Nemo pages, at full size, 21" by 16", and at that size, Nemo is a
completely different experience. First of all, you can't read a book this big the way that you
normally would. I couldn't read it at my desk chair -- even in my reading chair I barely fit (as
you can see from these photos). The only way to really read these books is lying on your stomach on
the carpet, the book open, chin propped on your hands, and you are, once again, 10 years old,
reading the funnies on a lazy Sunday. This second volume is every bit as charming and magic as the
first. Mostly, of course, it's made of Nemo strips (120 of them!), but there are a handful of sweet
little essays describing McCay's relationship to Coney Island (it was his muse) and to William
Randolph Hearts, his publisher (and nemesis). There's also a Dinosaur Gertie flip book for you to
cut and assemble, the perfect aperitif for your lazy Sunday with the funnies. Little Nemo in

ici.

Our favorite young comic book hopeful, Chris Jones, wrote in to show some pages from the comic he
is shopping around:
I talk a lot about the comic I’m working on, and I’d figure you might want to know
what it WAS, and make sure that I wasn’t just pissing into the wind with flights of fancy.
Well, here are the first couple of scripts, and some art for the second issue, drawn by the
wonderful Serena Guerra. If you think it’s worth showing off on the blog or in the letters
section, you can do that, or don’t if you think it’s garbage, or simply choose to
ignore the whole thing. Enjoy!
It’s not like I have a lot of other letters here, Chris, so sure, let’s show everyone
your comic!
