WHAT'S NEWVerison 2.5.2:
Fixed an issue where the history drawer can become unresponsive in some situations.
The Web has hit a point where tracking pageviews is useless for
startups.
There was a time when all you needed to succeed on the Internet were lots and lots of eyeballs,
and the best way of measuring those eyeballs was by tracking pageviews (measuring exactly which
pages on a website are viewed by individual visitors). The dot-com crash showed us that the
eyeball-based business model was a failure.
Sponsor
Since then, startups have moved toward direct monetization strategies such as subscriptions and
virtual goods - and these businesses using these strategies require very different metrics than
an advertising-based business would. Make no mistake, pageviews were valuable metric once, but
their time has passed.
Guest author Tim Trefren is one of the founders of Mixpanel, a real-time Web analytics service that helps companies understand how
users interact with Web applications. He writes about analytics at the company blog.
For startups that sell something, metrics like average revenue per user (ARPU) and customer
lifetime value (CLV) are vastly more valuable than detailed pageview tracking. It doesn't make
any sense to focus on pageviews (an approximation for value) when you can measure the real thing
directly.
There's also a clear pattern in the direction the Web is heading - toward interaction and
responsiveness, and away from separate pages. If you're going for incredible user experience,
on-page interactions are your bread and butter. Can you imagine what a drag it would be if the
page reloaded every time you commented or 'Liked' something on Facebook? It would be awful.
This trend further devalues the pageview as a valid metric. If you have a highly interactive Web
application that spans only a few pages, there's not a whole lot of value in seeing how many
times those pages were loaded. Much more valuable information can be found by tracking the parts
of your application that your users are interacting with the most. The benefits here are twofold:
You can directly measure the things that are important to you, and you gain unparalleled insight
into how people actually use your application.
If Not Pageviews, Then What?
When you're deciding how to incorporate analytics into your strategy, the most important thing is
that you are gathering actionable data. By this I mean that you have to be able to use
the information you gather to make a decision and take action. If you're not going to
use it to make a decision, it's a waste of time to even look at it.
With this in mind, there are a few areas we should focus on: split testing, interaction tracking,
conversion funnel analysis, and click tracking. These methods will give you the information you
need to both improve your conversion rates and your understanding of user behavior.
Just a few years back, your only options were to roll your own analytics or to pay tons of money
to a giant company like Omniture. This left startups in a tough spot, one many startup founders
still encounter today: it's difficult to justify putting a lot of development time into analytics
when it's not your main product, and it's hard for a small company to work with a large sales
organization.
Luckily, the analytics landscape is changing. Many new companies are sprouting up to handle every
aspect of your analytics, freeing you from the need to develop your own internal tools.
Split testing
Split testing involves creating different versions of your site and measuring how the changes
affect user behavior. Your changes can be as small as a different call to action or as large as a
complete redesign. With this data in hand, you can make changes to your website to massively
improve your conversion rates.
What companies do it?
Google Website Optimizer is a free
multivariate testing solution. It makes it possible to change a number of different things and
determine the optimal combination of changes.
Conversion funnel analysis
Funnel analysis is a way of measuring conversion rates across multiple steps of user acquisition.
For example, you can measure the rate at which visitors from the front page go to the pricing
page, and then how many continue on to actually create an account. This is an incredibly
important concept to understand, and can be applied to many aspects of your application.
What companies do it?
Mixpanel (my company) is a freemium service that provides
funnel analysis and segmentation.
Google Analytics has a feature called Funnel
Visualization that provides basic pageview-based funnel tracking.
KISSmetrics is a new company with a funnel analysis
product in closed beta.
Click tracking
Click tracking is a great way to measure how effective your website is. Every click a visitor
makes is recorded, so you know which links and buttons are receiving attention. There are a
number of ways to report this data, but the most popular is to overlay an image of your website
with a heatmap of all of the clicks. If your users aren't performing as you expect, you can try
changing the page and continuing the test.
What products do it?
ClickTale is a freemium service that can generate click
heatmaps and movies of single visitor sessions.
CrazyEgg is a paid service that can generate a few different
reports for your visitor click activity, including heatmaps.
Event tracking
Event tracking is a way of measuring exactly what users are doing on your site. Things like
invites sent, videos played, and user signups all count as events. This functionality will grow
more and more important as the Web grows more interactive.
What companies do it?
Kontagent is a freemium service that is focused on Facebook
applications. It can track Facebook-specific events like invites and notifications, among other
things.
Google Analytics recently added basic event tracking
to complement its pageview based service.
Measure Relevancy, Not Your Ego
Ultimately, analytics are crucial to online success. If you want to improve your startup, you've
got to be measuring it. It's critical to measure the right things, though - the things that are
actually important to your business, not things merely appeal to your ego. It can be mesmerizing
to watch the unique visitor count go up day-over-day, but this is a dangerous diversion. The era
of eyeballs equaling success is long past, so you should instead be measuring the things that are
truly relevant to your business.
If you're not measuring your visitors yet, I urge you to get your toes wet - track something
small. The conversion rates for the buttons on your front page would be a great place to start.

companies move beyond a pageview-centric mindset? Let us know in the comments
Publication Date: 2010 Mar 11 PMID: 20227419Authors: Nielsen, S. B. - Wilhelm, K. - Vad, B. -
Schleucher, J. - Morozova-Roche, L. - Otzen, D.Journal: J Mol BiolThe normal function of equine
lysozyme (EL) is the hydrolysis of peptidoglycan residues of bacterial cell walls. EL is closely
related to alpha-lactalbumins with respect to sequence and structure and further possesses the
calcium binding site of alpha-lactalbumins. Recently, EL multimeric complexes with oleic acids
(ELOA) were shown to possess tinctorial and morphological properties, similar to amyloidal
aggregates, and to be cytotoxic. ELOA's interactions with phospholipid membranes appears to be
central to its biological action, similar to human alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells
(HAMLET). Here, we describe the interaction of ELOA with phospholipid membranes. Confocal scanning
laser microscopy shows that ELOA, but not native EL, accumulates on the surface of giant
unilamellar vesicles, without inducing significant membrane permeability. Quartz crystal
microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) data indicated an essentially non-disruptive binding of ELOA
to supported lipid bilayers, leading to formation of highly dissipative and "soft" lipid membrane;
at higher concentrations of ELOA, the lipid membrane desorbs from the surface probably as bilayer
sheets of vesicles. This membrane rearrangement occurred to a similar extent when free oleic acid
(OA) was added, but not when free OA was removed from ELOA by prior incubation with BSA,
emphasizing the role of OA in this process. NMR data indicated an equilibrium between free and
bound OA which shifts towards free OA as ELOA is progressively diluted indicating that OA is
relatively loosely bound. Activity measurements together with fluorescence spectroscopy and
circular dichroism suggested a conversion of ELOA toward a more native-like state on interaction
with lipid membranes, although complete refolding was not observed. Altogether, these results
suggest that ELOA may act as an OA carrier and facilitate OA transfer to the membrane. ELOA's
properties illustrate that protein folding variants may possess specific functional properties
distinct from the native protein. Abbreviations QCM-D, Quartz crystal microbalance with
dissipation; CD, Circular dichroism; EL, equine lysozyme; ELOA, EL complex with oleic acid; OA,

Objective-- Monocyte/macrophage inflammation is an important contributor to diabetes and
cardiovascular disease. Studies have suggested saturated fatty acids (SFA) induce monocyte
inflammation in a Toll-like receptor-4-dependent manner, but recent data suggest SFA do not
directly interact with Toll-like receptor-4. The present study tests the novel hypothesis that
metabolism of SFA cooperatively amplifies Toll-like receptor-4-mediated inflammation. Methods and
Results-- THP-1 monocytes exposed to 100 micromol/L SFA in vitro for 16 hours followed by 1 ng/mL
lipopolysaccharide demonstrated enhanced IL-6 and IL-8 mRNA and protein expression (approx3-fold
higher than the sum of individual responses to SFA and lipopolysaccharide). SFA had similar effects
on THP-1 macrophages and primary human monocytes. This amplified lipopolysaccharide response could
be blocked by inhibition of SFA metabolism to ceramide and restored by cell-permeable ceramide.
Both SFA and ceramide activated PKC-zeta and the mitogen-activated protein kinases Erk, JNK, and
p38. Inhibition of these pathways prevented the SFA-induced increase in cytokine expression.
Conclusion-- These results provide evidence for potent amplification of monocyte/macrophage innate
immune responses by a novel pathway requiring metabolism of SFA to ceramide and activation of
PKC-zeta/mitogen-activated protein kinases. These findings demonstrate how nutrient excess may
modulate innate immune system activation and possibly contribute to development of diabetes and
cardiovascular disease. Saturated fatty acids (SFA) and Toll-like receptors (TLR) are linked to
inflammatory diseases such as diabetes and atherosclerosis. We demonstrate that SFA enhance
inflammation by amplifying TLR-mediated responses in vitro. This mechanism depends on conversion of
SFA to ceramide, activating PKC-zeta and MAPK pathways, and cooperatively enhancing
TLR/NF-kappaB-mediated inflammation. 10.1161/ATVBAHA.109.201681 Eric Schwartz, Wei-Yang Zhang, Sheetal Karnik, Sabine Borwege, Vijay Anand, Phyllis Laine, Yali

The PSP has
become home to a growing number of PS3 ports, from Super Stardust to LittleBigPlanet, but rarely has a
portable rendition of a PS3 game remained so faithful to the original as ModNation Racers
on PSP. (Well, perhaps with the exception of PixelJunk Monsters.)
ModNation Racers is launching simultaneously on PSP and PS3, and unlike many previous
cross-platform titles, this racer loses almost nothing in its portable conversion.
The career mode is nearly identical on both platforms, even featuring the same CG animated
cutscenes in both. The much-touted creation tools also make an appearance on the PSP, allowing you
to create and share levels rather easily. And most importantly, unlike LittleBigPlanet,
ModNation Racers retains multiplayer options, offering both Ad-Hoc and Infrastructure
connections.
Even the control schemes between the two platforms feel nearly identical. The PSP version also uses
the R-button for acceleration, just like its big console counterpart. It makes sense, but for some
reason, I expected the handheld to use the X-button for gas, and Mario Kart players may
need some time to adjust; especially considering ModNation's very different drift
mechanic.

DivX To Go va transférer et même convertir à la volée, si

From his earliest days, Mosab Hasson Yousef had a view of the inner workings of Hamas.
The son of one its founders, from childhood he was immersed in the shadowy world of Middle
Eastern terror and politics. Arrested time and again by the Shin Bet, the Israeli internal
intelligence service, he eventually made the decision to become a double agent, working
for Israel instead of against her. For ten years, from 1997 to 2007, he lived like this,
deeply embedded within Hamas, suspected by no one, yet passing vast amounts of information to
Israel. In this way he prevented assassinations, stopped suicide attacks and provided information
leading to the arrests or killings of many terrorists. He was Shin Bet's most valuable source of
information about Hamas.
In 1999 he had a chance encounter with a British visitor who invited Yousef to learn about the
Christian faith. Curious and intelligent, Yousef took this opportunity and was immediately struck
by the difference between Jesus Christ and Mohammed, between the Christian faith and the Islam he
had inherited from his fathers. In the months that followed he made a slow conversion to
Christianity and was quietly baptized.
Eventually Yousef grew tired of his double life and convinced the Israelis to release him from
his position with them. With some reluctence they agreed and allowed him to move to the United
States where he continues to live today. Son of Hamas is the story of his life, "A
gripping account of terror, betrayal, political intrigue, and unthinkable choices," according to
the rather verbose subtitle.
And it's a good story that is told well. Yousef offers a uniquely interesting perspective on
Hamas and on the political background and context in that area of the world. His story involves
just enough action and intrigue to keep it interesting. At times it is almost (but not quite)
unbelievable.
One thing I found interesting is that Youself reveals the Israelis not as the good guys but as
the less-bad guys. He develops some level of respect for them when he sees that they are fighting
for their lives against a host of nations bent on their destruction. But still he shows how they
are every bit as willing as the surrounding nations to torture and kill to further their own
ends. Their respect for life is not much greater than that of their enemies. So the Israelis
really are not the good guys in this story.
And of course I enjoyed reading not just of Yousef's conversion to Christianity but also the long
process and the inner turmoil that got him there. It was only through much soul-searching that he
was able to see Jesus Christ not just as a prophet but as the Son of God who died for the sin of
the world. So often I read books like this and am disappointed to see that the author finds joy
in everything but Christ. But here Yousef finds rest and joy and peace only when he
submits his life to Christ.
Yousef does not want to be a hero to Christians. At the end of the book he admits his own
unsuitability for that task. He is a new Christian and one who is unskilled--still a novice. And
yet he is one who has now written a book about his conversion that has landed on the New York
Times list of bestsellers. His testimony is powerful and I both hope and expect that God
will use it to show others the light that can be theirs if they turn to Christ.
This one is well worth reading. Buy a copy and marvel at God's grace. Marvel at how God will go
to great lengths to draw his people to himself.
