Virtual goods were all the rage a while ago, but nowadays I
don’t hear that much about them. Perhaps everyone got bored of Second Life, companies
stopped opening virtual headquarters in virtual worlds, and WoW players…well,
they’re a lost cause anyway, tormented creatures always destined to live in the shadow
(also, Blizzard does not allow off-site trade with virtual money or goods from the game).
This doesn’t mean that the marketplace for virtual goods does not exist; it’s just
not that hip anymore. PlaySpan wants to
change this, and they’ve launched the PlaySpan Virtual Goods Marketplace which will contain
items from popular MMOs such as EVE Online, Gunz, Kal, Knight Online, Saga, Shaiya, Silk Road,
Soldier Front, Trickster and War Rock. This is not a black or grey market, though: only
publisher-approved items will be sold at PlaySpan.
PlaySpan focuses on the young audience who might not have access to credit cards (more
specifically, their dads told them they’ll throw them out in the street if they touch their
wallet again). Therefore, they’ve set up a number of alternate micropayment methods to give
the little rascals what they crave. Need a time code, a cool item, or some virtual money? No
problemo, you can buy them here if you have access to either a credit card, PayPal or PayByCash.
If you’re not convinced, PlaySpan sweetened the deal with an introductory offer: new
Marketplace customers will receive 100 free points on registration.

If you’ve been looking for a simple way to track your spending, make a budget, or follow
your investments – without splashing out any dough – then
online finance managers might be just up your alley. Let’s take a look at Mint and Rudder, two very similar money management sites that give you the tools to manage
your hard-earned cash.
Getting Started with Mint
Getting started with Mint couldn’t be easier: you’ll just need to hand over the
username and password to your financial institution (you can reassure yourself with Mint’s privacy policy, along with a
detailed FAQ of security issues).
It’s easy to add accounts to your Mint dashboard, and thousands of financial institutions
are available from which to choose from. In less than five minutes total, I was looking at an
extremely detailed (yet manageable) analysis of three of my accounts, along with transaction
information, spending trends, saving suggestions, and more.
Mint Your Money
Those of us who are financial software-phobic will love Mint’s simple yet comprehensive
financial habits breakdown. There’s nothing you have to dig through a manual to understand
here – it’s all pretty basic. For instance:
Overview: This is your main dashboard where you can see a quick snapshot of what
your money’s been doing: recent account activity, budget trends, any alerts, etc.
Spending Trends: This gives you a pie chart o’spending; you can dig down
within each category to see what your spending looks like. This is Quicken without the hassle.
Transactions: You can get a quick overview of all your accounts at once here,
filter them by individual account, search via transaction type or just type in a search term
(i.e., “Costco”).
Ways to Save: Mint pays the bills with sponsored offers on the “Ways to
Save” page; this is also where you’ll be offered potential moneysaving deals, such as
a higher interest rate for your savings account.
Mint Alerts: The most convenient tool that Mint offers is email or SMS alerts
that can warn you if you’re going over your credit limit, about to incur some fees, getting
a bit low in your account, and a lot more. This is an amazingly simple yet super awesome way to
stay on top of your finances.
Mobile Access: You can access your entire Mint profile from the convenience of a
Web-enabled phone or mobile device. For instance, if you text “Bal” (balance) to
“MyMint” (696468), you’ll get instant balance reports for any account
you’ve added to your Mint dashboard – and as we’re heading into
the holiday season, this comes in especially handy.
Credit Management: Mint also offers a credit management program that scans for
better interest rates and fees in addition to information on how to lower your current credit
card debt – again, all for free.
Investment Management: You can manage all your investments –
401K, brokerage accounts, etc. – in one easy portal with Mint (rather than
logging into one out of the way site after another). Also, since Mint automatically updates your
investment information, you can stay on top of exactly what’s going on, rather than relying
on an annual update.
Pros & Cons
Pros:
· You don’t have to balance anything; it’s all done for you.
· Read-only connection to bank accounts according to privacy policy.
· Excellent credit card management program; scans for better interest rates and fees and
gives you information on how to lower your current debt.
· Easy to set up alerts
· Free!
Cons:
· You can’t import from any other financial software (such as Quicken), and you
can’t take Mint data anywhere else.
· Mint also trusts your bank or other financial institution to be completely right, there
are no inherent checks and balances.
· Good for keeping track, but shouldn’t be the only thing you use - always go to the
source.
· Can’t be used offline.
Getting Started with Rudder
Rudder initially is not as easy to set up as Mint. The process is similar: pick your financial
institution, hand over your username and password (read the privacy policy), and wait for your information to be
extrapolated. However, this initial step alone took nearly five minutes –
compared to about thirty seconds for Mint, and everything at Rudder must be entered manually.
Yes, that’s right – manually.
Once you’ve added in your data, Rudder will identify your recurring bills and expenses. You
also have to add in your income, which unless you work a straight paycheck to paycheck kind of
job is not the most intuitive way to track your revenue.
However, Rudder’s not necessarily about the nitty-gritty details (and this is where a lot
of people might say “thanks, but no thanks”). Rudder likes to focus on your big
fiscal picture via broad stroke financial widgets that track this activity, such as:
Spend Meter: a simple way to tell if you’re spending beyond your means,
but it won’t give you exact dollar amounts.
Savings Widget: A simple way to track your savings.
Bill Tracker: See if there’s anything upcoming that needs to be paid.
Rudder also offers emails (daily, weekly, monthly) to give you your account overview without
actually having to log in to your account – you can get these via your
Web-enabled phone or mobile device.
Pros:
· Easy to use
· Good for overall tracking
· Email-based; manage your finances via your inbox
Cons:
· Requires a manual setup
· Not good for specific money management
Rudder is definitely a simple, no-clutter tool for tracking your finances...emphasis on simple.
If you’re looking for a big picture sort of tool that gives you an overall view of your
money, then Rudder might be a good pick.
Mint vs. Rudder: The Bottom Line
Many of us have a nagging feeling in the back of our minds that we’re just not doing enough
to manage our money, so we purchase expensive financial management software packages that end up
sitting unused on the shelf. Both Mint and Rudder aim to solve this problem, providing free,
simple, yet powerful money management tools that anyone can use, no matter what their level of
financial expertise.
However, Rudder, while somewhat useful, only provides a core overview of your finances and is
tedious to initially get going. In addition, there’s not much in the way of actually
teaching you to manage your money more efficiently; it’s a tool aimed at showing you what
you have left in your account, and that’s pretty much it.
On the other hand, Mint is simple to set up and gives you a detailed yet completely
understandable money analysis, with tools that can quickly help you become more financially
savvy. Credit, investments, budgets – all of these are concepts that many of
us tend to avoid, but Mint makes them accessible using our own accounts as a springboard to a
healthier financial outlook. While Rudder is a good tool to get you going in the quest for fiscal
improvement, Mint is a better long-term choice.

Review of Macbook Pro 2008 Skin from BestSkinsEver
After much anticipation I receieved my new Macbook Pro aluminum body a few weeks ago and it was
missing something very crucial, a protective covering. Of course no one wants to disturb the
precious looks of their new elegant Macbook Pro, the only way to preserve the original look of the
laptop is by a skin. There are currently two highly praised companies that provide skins for many
electronics from cell phones ipods and to laptops. Bestskinsever www.bestskinsever.com $27.99 and Invisible
Shield www.zagg.com $54.99. I
currently have the BSE version installed on my Macbook Pro and find it great. Let me start off with
explaining what comes in the kit.
What is Included in the kit:
I should use the term Kit useless because it comes in a large envelope with 3 sheets each having
different parts of the total body skin attached. There is one single piece for the top part of the
laptop, a cover for the battery compartment, a small piece for the latch for the battery cover,
another peice for the remaining underbody, two seperate pieces for the wrist guard near the
trackpad and one for the trackpad as well (I did not use the track pad and will explain later). In
adition there are 2 peices that run along the front two sides of the laptop before it hits the
express card slot on one side and secruity lock latch on the other side. There is one strip
covering the portion of the back side of the laptop which is attached to the main lid and two small
strips covering on the rear edges of the laptop. Basically this kit has you covered on every level
for protecting your new $2000 investment. The great thing about the kit is that it does not cover
up any screws which is noted on the bottom side of the laptop. also there is a space for the button
for battery life so that is not coverd up.
Installing:
First thing first, with the BSE skin, you need to mix your own solution, it is not that hard at all
just get 1/3 teaspoon for every 10 oucnes water. You don't really need to measure this stuff but a
keen eye will be suffice with measuring. If its really helpful to use a spray bottle to put the
solution in so that you can spray the skin evenly and place it on the appropriate spot.
Installing of this skin did take some time, approx. 45 minutes if you want to be precise and take
your time with every detail. You will need the help of another person when lifting off the large
skins such as the top lid so one person can spray the solution onto the skin and the other person
can lift it off. It is crucial you do not let the skin adhere to itself. Be easy with the solution,
it is there to make placing the skin on easy so you can move it around. Once it dries is when the
skin actually sticks.
Bottom:
Install the bottom first, this was not so bad, a few simple attempts and it was easily alligned
correctly. The battery compartment was also an easy install but make sure you do not overlap the
two skins because the they will sit flush and need to be on their own piece especially when the
battery top is taken off. the small covering for the battery latch was a simple 30 second job. I
let this dry and then fliped it over to start on the top layer.
Top Layer:
The top layer was the most difficult and you would think it would be easy because it is just one
big peice. I put the skin on and attempt after attempt I would fail because one corner would not be
aligned exactly and would have to try again. A side note: When I finished the install of the entire
laptop, the next morning was a huge air bubble on the top part of the notebook and had to be fixed.
Fixing it was pretty hard because it was already dry and set so lifting the skin off was a task. I
was lucky that the bubble was near a corner, if it were in the middle it would probably be
nightmare. Therefore take your time and make sure there are no air bubles at all when you are
finished.
Wrist pad:
The wrist pad skin is probably the most useful part and the easiest installation. It took one
minute to install both sides perfectly with no air bubbles. I did not install the trackpad mainly
because the feel of the skin on a trackpad was too abrasive. Being a new Aluminum body Macbook Pro
owner, we are lucky to have the glass trackpad with smooth motions. Therefore, I see no point in
destroying that feature with a skin.
The sides:
Installing the sides was pretty straight forward. There was nothing more to it than just figuring
out where the items go which at first took a few minutes. It would have been nice for BSE to
include a small diagram perhaps but again it is not rocket science and just simple common sense
will tell you where it all goes.
At the end of the install, the edges were kind of comming up so I had to palm them with my hand but
after that it stayed on fine.
A few days later the skin looked perfect and added a nice shine to the laptop. There is one thing
to be said. I put my laptop in a Targus Neoprene case and sometimes on the bottom where I did not
install the skin as perfectly as I hoped, there are some cloth fibers sticking to the edges but
very minimal.
As far as the quality of BSE skin, it is great and probably the best for the money and quality
alike. Honestly for $28 vs the $55 at Zagg, it is a no brainer. Yes the Zagg comes in a pretty box
and comes with a squeegee and solution but honestly, I do not need to pay that extra 27 dollars for
that stuff. BSE is quick and to the point with their kit. Anybody is able to mix water and soap and
use a credit card as the squeegee so again no point and dishing out the extra cash for the
Zagg.
All in all a great product and a must for people who want to protect their new laptop and not
destroy the look.

DoNE releases
the DVDRip of a teen flick staring Emma Roberts. Its about a girl who’s sent to a boarding
school, well something like that. Anyway not a huge fan of these kind of genre. So enjoy for the
people who are.
The unhinged behavior of a Malibu princess (Emma Roberts) prompts her frustrated father to send
her to an all-girls English boarding school in this teen comedy penned by Lucy Dahl (daughter of
Roald Dahl and a boarding school alumni herself) and directed by Nick Moore. Poppy is a bratty,
self-absorbed 16-year-old whose pampered L.A. childhood has left her with a notable sense of self
entitlement. Showered with unlimited-balance credit cards and constantly flanked by a horde of
hangers-on, the ill-mannered Poppy loudly lets her parents know just how frustrated she is with
her current family situation. When Poppy pulls a prank that goes further over the top than she
originally intended, however, her frustrated father (Aidan Quinn) decides that it’s high
time his spoiled daughter understands the true concept of discipline and sends her off to
boarding school in England.

The soap opera of would-be Mac cloner Psystar was already full of shady twists and turns, but
there's a possibility Apple's legal team thinks there's some truth to a few of the wilder
conspiracy theories out there -- a paragraph tacked on to an amended version of the complaint filed
in California says that Apple believes people or corporations "other than Psystar are involved in
Psystar's unlawful and improper activities." That could mean just about anything, of course --
we've always thought Psystar was being a little too cocky, and no one's ever figured out
how a fledging company that couldn't even
hold on to a credit card processor could retain such a hotshot
law firm -- but chances are Apple's just covering its ass in case it wants to sue the major
investors of Psystar individually or even the OSx86 hackers that unwillingly
enabled the company's dubious business. Either way, with all of Psystar's antitrust
counterclaims dismissed and Apple adding new DMCA claims to its lawsuit, we've got a feeling
things are about to go boom in Florida pretty soon -- if machines really are
still shipping, this is probably your last chance to grab a piece of ( semi-functional)
history.
