Instead of dwelling on whether an economic apocalypse is about to loom upon us, some startups are
plugging away at improving their products. Israeli Kampyle is a
case-in-point. Today the company is extending its feedback analytics platform from websites to
client software—with a specific focus on the installation process, a major
pain point for client applications.
Most software client application installations have high abandonment rates. There’s no
shortage of reasons for users to abort the installation process, these include: slow/heavy
downloads, too many steps, security concerns, lack of information, and too many ads. Speaking to
customers, Kampyle learned that the aborts leave companies with many assumptions, but few
conclusions. Sure, many companies trigger uninstall feedback forms when the user abruptly ends
the installation, but it seems—at least from what Kampyle has
learned—companies find it difficult to translate the collected information to
actionable items.
Kampyle for
Software is designed to do just that. It leverages Kampyle’s feedback analytics
platform to aggregate and manage feedbacks generated by two forms it
produces—one for the Installation, the other for uninstall. Instead of
manually going through each feedback form, as many companies do today, Kampyle groups the
feedback alltogether and presents the aggregate information in easy-to-read charts.Â
The forms are completely customizable of course, and so are the landing pages that are designated
to open upon installation termination. No special programming knowledge is required to integrate
the calls into installer creation tools such as InstallShield.
Kampyle for Software is free for Open Source applications. Commercial applications will be priced
by scale, with a minimum of $99/mo. The first month is free so there’s no reason not to
give it a shot.
From its debut 5 months ago,
Kampyle has amassed 3000 customers. It may not be the next Google, but at least it’s
plugging away.

At 21 minutes long Vivian
Girls‘ debut album is over almost before it begins; it flashes by in a cloud of sludgy
distortion and hissy noise. The trio belongs to a proud heritage of noise pop that started (as do
so many things) with the Velvet Underground, went through to the Shop
Assistants and early My Bloody Valentine in the mid-’80s, and continued on to Black
Tambourine and Tiger Trap in the late ’90s. Along with current bands like Times New
Viking, Vivian Girls take their cues from their predecessors and cover their melodies in
fuzzy gunk. It’s a winning formula, as the bands mentioned previously have proven. Vivian
Girls don’t add much to the formula here as they race through the ten songs at a breathless
pace, submerging the guitars in a sludgy murk and barely pausing for hooks. The vocals sound
rushed and off-key, the harmonies are flat at times, and the drums often fall behind the beat as
the rest of the band races for the finish line. If you demand precision and timing from your pop
music, you’ll be aghast at the trio’s lack of professionalism. But what Vivian Girls
sacrifice in chops, they gain back double in energy and immediacy. The sound of three people
ripping through hooky tunes without regard for pleasantries and taste is one of the joys of rock
& roll, and Vivian Girls do satisfy on that account. The album could have used more
variation; the only ballad on the album (”Where Do You Run”) is one of the
highlights, and proof that the band doesn’t need to bash everything out all the time. The
bashing sounds pretty good, though, and a couple of the songs like “Tell the World”
and “Wild Eyes” match up well with the best work of their influences. This is a fine
introduction to the group, and if Vivian Girls stay out of fancy studios and keep cranking out
good songs, they might come up with something as classic as Will Anything
Happen or Tiger Trap.

Looks like the
Sci-Fi Channel may have found a hit in Sanctuary. The former web series debuted on the network
last Friday and was seen by
more than 2.7 million viewers. The supernatural show’s success highlights some key
similarities and differences between it and quarterlife, another high-profile web series
that jumped to oldteevee.
Like quarterlife before it, Sanctuary was tapped to make
the leap from the web to television amidst the writers’ strike earlier this year, when the
networks were desperate for content. Both shows were picked up by NBC Universal properties
— quarterlife by NBC, and Sanctuary by the Sci-Fi Channel.
The two shows have more than that in common. Both quarterlife and Sanctuary
were created by teams of TV professionals. Sanctuary creator Damian Kindle had
previously worked on Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis. Both shows were
expensive to produce. While quarterlife creator Marshall Herskovitz declined to give us
a budget (he only said “way less” than any television show and “way more”
than what was spent on online shows), it cost $4 million to
produce the original 135-minute fx-heavy Sanctuary.
What was different was the expectation for each. One one hand, quarterlife drew an
audience of 3.86 million for its debut on NBC, which put it in last place amongst the broadcast
networks. The show was basically dead on arrival and quickly shuttled off to sister network
Bravo. Sanctuary, on the other hand, has attracted a million less viewers, but
because it was on a niche network, it gets a press release and praise from the network. (The real
test is whether Sanctuary can grow this initial audience.)
The lesson here for future web series looking to make the leap to TV? Know your audience and
migrate accordingly.

Deerhoof - Offend
Maggie
With equal time devoted to Deerhoof’s sweet, challenging and reflective sides, Offend
Maggie is one of the band’s most balanced albums. Shades of The Runners
Four’s sprawling experimentalism, Friend Opportunity’s economic pop and
Apple O’s galloping riffs can be heard throughout these songs, but they never feel
scattered — they just feel like natural additions to Deerhoof’s consistently
interesting, and continually changing, body of work.
Bob Dylan - The
Bootleg Series, Vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs - Rare and Unreleased 1989-2006
The eighth volume in Bob Dylan’s official bootleg series focuses on the songwriter from
1989’s Oh Mercy straight through 2006’s Modern Times. There are
many stops –and surprises–along the way. It offers a better picture of Dylan through
the 1990s and into the new millennium than his released studio records suggest, and is, if
anything, a new Bob Dylan record rather than an odds and sods collection.
Lambchop - OH
(Ohio)
OH (Ohio), Lambchop’s tenth proper album, finds the band in masterful form; Kurt
Wagner and his seven accompanists (with two additional musicians helping out with horns and
woodwinds) bring a dazzling sense of grace, balance, and drama to the melodies, and while one
senses the size of the ensemble while listening to these songs, there’s no clutter or waste
in the arrangements, and Lambchop is able to generate a compelling emotional immediacy no matter
how broad their musical canvas.
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s -
Not Animal
Following a spat with Epic Records, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s were forced to
issue two concurrent albums: Animal, the band’s preferred sophomore record, and
Not Animal, which featured enough marketable material to appease their label. Not
Animal is anything but a commercially-minded album, however. While the band’s debut
effort drew parallels to Sufjan Stevens and Arcade Fire, this record is more introverted and
melancholy, with the 8 bandmates rarely piling their instruments into lush musical heaps. Not
Animal is a challenging listen, perhaps, but it grows all the more rewarding as the album
progresses.
Oasis - Dig Out
Your Soul
Colorful and dense where Don’t Believe the Truth was straightforward, Dig Out
Your Soul finds Oasis reconnecting to the churning psychedelic undercurrents in their music.
This is heavy, murky music, as dense, brutal and loud as Oasis has ever been, building upon the
swagger of Don’t Believe and containing not a hint of the hazy drift of their late
’90s records: it’s what Be Here Now would have sounded like without the
blizzard of cocaine and electronica paranoia.
Jay Reatard - Matador
Singles ‘08
Jay Reatard spent much of 2008 releasing singles for his new label Matador, six in all.
Matador Singles ‘08 collects all the tracks and adds one song as a bonus. The
songs find Reatard moving away from the frantic wildness of earlier records and into a more
mature and tuneful direction. That said, there are still plenty of racous rockers mixed in among
the acoustic guitar-driven and melodic mid-tempo songs.
