pThis little chunk of jittery goodness has been out for a minute, showcasing the talents and
playfulness of twenty-something wunderkind Hudson Mohawke. The pretty little track jerks along
while pleasantly balancing techno, electro, hip-hop and, dare it be said, IDM. While Hud Mo
declares it "emotronic", it's also part of a whole school of tunes that Pitchfork's own Martin
Clark has adeptly labelled "wonky". The name does capture the feel of "Velvet Peel" as well of the
work of some of Hud Mo's compadres: fellow Glaswegian a href="http://www.myspace.com/rustiebeetz"

The Mountain Goats - Satanic Messiah EP (self
released) [ download] [ upcoming shows]
John Darnielle's catalogue is so deep that there's room for hits and misses alike. Satanic
Messiah definitely falls into the former category; a work of unusual subtlety based in large
part on the piano and Darnielle's thin but sure voice. Only "Wizard Buys a Hat" broadens the
instrumental palette, but not to the detriment of EP's overall mood. This is something of a high
water mark among short-form Mountain Goats releases, consistent and dedicated to a narrative that's
open to your wildest interpretation. - paul

The Allmusic Blog -

Since slowly getting back into the record game a couple years ago, Slumberland seems to have been loading
up for a huge display of fireworks in 2008. The years spent in inactivity haven’t dulled
their knack for finding great pop bands and putting out great records, one after another.
The Lodger
- Life is Sweet
The Lodger’s debut album, Grown-Ups, was a fine slice of indie pop that called to
mind stellar groups like Orange Juice, the Wedding Present, and Heavenly, while making a case
that they might someday be mentioned in that same class. Life Is Sweet is a step forward
in both sound and song, and goes a long way toward making this thought a reality. (Read full
review and hear samples here)
Crystal
Stilts - Alight of Night
……a perfect blend of psychedelic gloom and garage rock punch, of indie pop hooks
and girl group drama, of noise and candy. It’s obvious from the first few seconds of
Alight of Night that Crystal Stilts aren’t doing anything shockingly new or
innovative, and that’s alright. They give the old noise pop formula enough of a kick to
make this a very worthwhile addition to any noise pop fan’s collection. (Read full review
and hear samples here.)
Cause
Co-Motion! - It’s Time! Singles & EPs 2005-08
The tinny, live-wire sound the quartet sends shooting through the wires is reminiscent of the
clatter and hiss of Henry’s Dress, the strutting songcraft calls to mind Jane Pow,
and the reverb-soaked recording style is a hallmark of the label’s approach from Black Tambourine to Aislers Set to now. (Read full
review and hear samples here.)
Along with these albums, Slumberland’s been crazy busy releasing singles all year. Starting
with their excellent Searching for the Now 7″ series (which features songs from
top poppers like Summer Cats, A Sunny Day in Glasgow and Bye!, Archie from Velocity Girl’s
new project), continuing with the return of the June
Brides‘ Phil
Wilson with an EP of interesting covers called Industrial Strength, and finishing
with a one-two knockout punch from Scotland by a couple bands formed out of the wreckage of
the
Royal We. Bricolage’s orange-y, juice-y single “Turn You Over” is all elbows
and knees up, Sexy Kids‘
“Sisters Are Forever” is a brilliant indie rock anthem with a huge, heartwarming
hook. Both leave the listener desperate for more!
All this and The
Pains of Being Pure At Heart full-length coming in early 2009 too. Check the video for the
first single “Everything For You” now and check back often to see what other magic
tricks Mike Slumberland has up his sleeve.

pIt's two days before Christmas, say, and you're at your parents' place. You've endured an evening
of awkward conversation and then they go to bed and you stay up alone drinking eggnog, which with
every new glass gradually transforms into straight brandy. You fall asleep on the couch and wake up
about 4 a.m. with a pounding headache. The 5-CD changer is still cycling through the Christmas
tunes the 'rents had put on all those hours ago; you're disoriented, and you're feeling ill. This

pThe idea of a a href="http://www.myspace.com/theraveonettes"
target="_blank"strongRaveonettes/strong/a Christmas tune sounds a bit off, like Darren Aronofsky
directing a kids movie. With their emotionally detached harmonies and homemade wall of sound, the
Danish duo famously have their minds in the gutter, singing about illicit sex, cheap drugs, and
dead lovers over 1950s guitar stomps and 60s-style production. Not exactly merrymaking. But "Come
On Santa", from the EP emWishing You a Rave Christmas/em, is neither the Dirty Noel nor a holiday
cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners, but actually a sincere plea for a white Christmas. "Come on,
Santa," Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo sing over a minor-key bells theme and a little drum machine
boy rhythm, "bring me snow on Christmas." Oh wait. I just got that./p pMoving on. There's also a
nice little section about the birth of Baby Jesus: "They you give to me the greatest gift of all,
your love to me tonight, and then I feel okay." Just got that too. Damn the Raveonettes and their
double entendres. Guess it's another back-alley Christmas, but the lights and tinsel sure make the
gutter look festive./p p object classid="clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000" width="300"
