title="exited the post"exited the post/a at Microsoft and joined Juniper in July. He had been given
high marks for the making aQuantive fit fairly nicely into Microsoft's different culture and
structure. Clearly, the choice of Qi Lu over McAndrews means he lost the battle to replace Johnson.
Despite his good work, in many ways, McAndrews was considered a longshot. The Microsoft purchase
made him very rich, and therefore unlikely to want to work for someone
else—especially someone like the hard-to-please Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
McAndrews isn't going anywhere at the moment and will take the next few months to "transition out"
of his job. So while he ponders his next move, he would be an interesting—and
ironic—candidate for Yahoo's open CEO role. a

quot; That was great, quot; one of my friends said. quot;Yeah, quot; I responded. quot; And all

supposedly coined in the 1960s by a

Microsoft announced the hire
of
former ten-year Yahoo exec Dr. Qi Lu today as
President of their Online Services Group. He’ll report directly to CEO Steve Ballmer.
Here’s the email Ballmer sent to all Microsoft staff forty minutes ago:
From: Steve Ballmer
Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 1:39 PM
To: Microsoft - All Employees (QBDG)
Subject: New Leader of Online Services Group
Search, advertising and online services are critical to Microsoft’s long-term strategy. To
succeed, we need the right talent. Today, I’m pleased to announce that Qi Lu will join
Microsoft as president of our Online Services Group. Qi will oversee all efforts in search, our
online advertising platform, and all of our online information and communications services. Qi
will join Microsoft on Jan. 5 and report to me.
Qi is one of the most respected technical minds in the industry. He comes to Microsoft after 10
years at Yahoo, where he most recently served as executive vice president of engineering for all
of Yahoo’s search and advertising development efforts. Before joining Yahoo, Qi was a
researcher at IBM’s Almaden Research Center. He has a doctorate in computer science from
Carnegie Mellon, and he holds 20 U.S. patents.
Qi’s combination of deep technical expertise, proven leadership capability and broad
business knowledge is rare in our industry. There is no one better qualified to guide our work to
reinvent search and online advertising.
While I’m excited that Qi is joining Microsoft, I’m sorry to share the news that
Brian McAndrews has decided to transition out of the company. Brian came to us with the
acquisition of aQuantive in 2007. Since then, he has helped build a world-class business in
online advertising that provides a solid foundation for future growth. I have great respect for
the important contributions Brian has made to Microsoft, and I wish him the very best in the
future.
On Monday at 4 p.m. Pacific Time, Qi will join me at Café RedWest for an Employee Town
Hall. I encourage you to attend or to watch the webcast. If you have questions for Qi or me,
please send them in advance to and we’ll try to answer as many as possible.

Whither BitTorrent? The company is picking itself up and putting itself back together after
recent
exec departures and layoffs. And it has
finally shed its consumer business, the download store that had helped kicked off
Hollywood’s last few years of digital dealmaking, but never did much after that.
We just got off the phone with BitTorrent VP of Marketing Simon Morris, who filled us in on the
company’s changing strategy, as well as the recent hubbub about it moving away from the P2P
protocol to one that would interfere with VoIP and other activity. Morris said that following
the company’s multiple rounds of layoffs, BitTorrent is now “in safe shape” to
move forward. A lightly edited transcript follows.
NewTeeVee: So, I saw that the Torrent Entertainment Network is no longer
up. When did that shut down?
Simon Morris: I think it was Nov. 17, a little over two weeks ago.
NewTeeVee: Was that due to lack of use?
Morris: It was due to two things. We found it very hard to make it a profitable
business endeavor. If you look at the things we’re trying to do as we shrink down the
company due to the economic environment, we’re experts in content delivery over the
internet. With the Torrent Entertainment Network we were stepping into a new domain of
merchandising of consumer entertainment products. In many ways, the retrenchment of the company
has been really focusing on what we’re good at.
NewTeeVee: Can you give specific numbers on how many users or downloads you had?
Morris: No. It wasn’t sufficiently successful for us. We investigated all
sorts of different approaches: try before you buy, download to own, download to rent,
ad-supported streaming. Ultimately, I wouldn’t say us retrenching away from it is any
indication it can’t be done, it’s just pure resources.
NewTeeVee: It seems from your shutdown FAQ that you’re
doing a good job of taking care of obligations to former customers.
Morris: We have DRM servers; we’ll just leave them up. It seems from a PR
point of view far more sensible to leave those things in place.
NewTeeVee: So, what’s happening with your remaining businesses? How is the
P2P CDN business going?
Morris: We’re focusing both on our consumer BitTorrent client but also on
our DNA content delivery service. The client is more popular than ever. Though I don’t know
if you saw the article in The
Register this week? We’re now talking to the guy about writing a followup. You will
find his opinion may have changed.
NewTeeVee: That was about moving to the UTP protocol?
Morris: It was about moving from P2P to UTP. The tone of the article and the
hysteria surrounding it was about creating a greedy protocol to bring the Internet to its knees,
and in fact it’s the opposite, we’re working on a more polite, gentler protocol.
We’ve briefed the ISPs, including Comcast, and we’re ultimately not trying to do
something that would damage ourselves.
NewTeeVee: And as for the DNA product?
Morris: The DNA client also has the benefit of this polite protocol, which has
actually already been implemented in the DNA client. The new protocol is UTP, based on UDP, but
with a very important layer built on top that gives it particular congestion control.

pMicrosoft's quest to find a digital head will end in a rather technical choice: former Yahoo EVP
of engineering for Search and Ad Tech Qi Lu, according a
href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081204/former-yahoo-tech-star-qi-lu-likely-to-be-named-microsofts-digital-head-by-next-week/"
title="to Kara"to Kara/a. The final details of his contract are being ironed out, and could be
announced by next week, the story says. This position has been vacant since Kevin Johnson left and
joined Juniper. /p p bThe logic for hiring Lu/b: since a lot of Microsoft's future rests on winning
in the search and search ad space and catching up with Google and Yahoo, Lu is also well suited for
the position. But it is still a curious choice, as Lu lacks the business acumen to drive MSFT out
of its digital/online troubles. As a result, he could be paired with another senior MSFT business
exec, and that's still being decided. He will be overseeing three major egos at MSFT: Satya
Nadella, Yusuf Mehdi, and Brian McAndrews. McAndrews was thought to be a front runner to run the
merged Yahoo-MSN group if MSFT was successful in buying Yahoo, earlier this year. Likely McAndrews
could be that business partner to work with Lu, the story speculates. /p pstrongRelated/strong/p ul
