Un HTPC en un sólo chip que se integraría en la tele, dando lugar a un ordenador - televisor que llevaría internet al salón de casa. Es la propuesta realizada por Intel en su Intel Developer Forum con un planteamiento que va más allá de una solución hardware, sino que implica a Yahoo en lo que se refiere a la integración de la web mediante su plataforma de widgets.

Llevamos tiempo hablando de televisión e internet pero no hemos comentado dos aspectos que esta propuesta de "televisor ordenador" pone de manifiesto: el futuro de esta convergencia desembocará en una experiencia interactiva y social. No hay más que pensar en comentar el partido con los amigos mientras lo vemos, pasarnos recomendaciones desde la propia tele o participar en los programas de forma mucho más intensa que con los famosos "envíanos tu SMS de pago", para darnos cuenta de que el potencial de la idea. Técnicamente es posible, por lo que cabe preguntarse si hay demanda ¿Tiene esto realmente sentido o es sólo algo que puede interesar sólo a usuarios avanzados?

Llevo unos meses con un HTPC, un media center bastante potente, junto a la tele del salón y lo cierto es que no es un producto para la experiencia que se espera en televisión. No es en absoluto "enchufar y listo", sino que viene con necesidad de configuración, instalación de codecs y programas, administración... vamos, un ordenador. El reto para quien quiera llevar internet a la tele principal del hogar es conseguir una buena experiencia de usuario sin perder la libertad de poder escoger la fuente de mis contenidos, algo que la mayoría de propuestas dejan de lado al querer ofrecer el dispositivo pero también ser el único proveedor de contenidos.

Lo presentado por Intel y Yahoo como "televisor ordenador" parece interesante, pero tiene difícil convencer al resto de la industria. Sony con Bravia tiene sus propios planes y muchas otras compañías (Apple, Microsoft, Google) están construyendo soluciones alternativas. Tampoco tengo claro que la integración entre internet y tv se articule mediante widgets y no como experiencias creadas "ex profeso". En todo caso, bueno que sea extensible (otros como Joost o Twtter desarrollan widgets para la plataforma) y no una caja cerrada. Proyecto a seguir.
