televisão como o lendário Top of the Pops e a cobertura do
Festival de Glastonbury e dos
Concertos Promenade (mais conhecidos por The
Proms), de acordo com o Brand
Republic (via Distorted-Loop).
Estes

Critter Round-Up nous met

Dan posted that the signing in DC will take place at 1pm - I know that the LoC event itself is
free, but do those of us who want something signed have to bring or have anything besides a book
(or stack of them)?
To which Mr. G waxes:
This is so mysterious. What kind of thing could people have or bring apart from books? Perhaps owl
feathers in their hatbands, or black orchids in their buttonholes?
Anyway. No, they should just come. And by special permission of Harper Collins there will be copies
of The Graveyard Book available that day only.
And to which I will only add: You do realize that you all need to show up with owl feathers in your
hatbands and black orchids in your buttonholes now, right? ( UPDATE: In fact,
thanks to the largess of a fan, the first twenty-odd of you that I see so attired will receive a
free copy of the UK edition of ODD AND THE FROST GIANTS, not yet published in the US.)
- Mr. G will be appearing at a fundraiser for the Open Rights Group on 24th October. The
details are all on their site. They're
charging 5 pounds to existing members, 10 pounds to the general public, and it's completely
free to anyone who signs up to become a regular supporter of ORG between now and the event's
date. Sounds like a good reason to support a good cause!

The Arrival of the RoboPanda or, good fences make good neighbors
but good umbrellas make better bludgeons
When I arrived home this evening, I discovered two ragamuffins, of the sort increasingly infesting
this once-fine borough, loitering by a large package on my stoop.
As I drew closer, their eyes seemed to alight with a sort of nervous hope.
"I always wanted a panda," whispered the little matchstick girl.
I recoiled; for a moment my confusion overwhelmed my revulsion. How could she know what was
within?
The answer was quickly revealed, and did not please me. Of all the meddlesome knavery!
I brandished my umbrella and shook it vigorously at them in chastisement. Choice words were uttered
then, you have my word on that!
They fled, and I briefly pursued them.
Having chased them off, I retired to my study to survey the damage.
Thankfully, the shipment within was unmarred by their grubby little trespasses.
How fortunate that I happened to have with me an acquaintance who is a professional photographer to
capture the entire saga! Labels: still

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nevada -- Wild rides, fireworks and letting it all hang out. That's the updated
American dream at Burning Man 2008.
The annual desert gathering always celebrates that most-American ideal: freedom. Freedom to ride
a giant red, white and blue tricycle across the playa; freedom to blow your mind however you
want; freedom to traipse around wearing nothing but body paint.
That kind of ingrained whimsy, rather than politics, seems to be the point of this year's
American Dream art
theme at Burning Man. "What has America achieved that you admire?" is the event's official
statement. "What has it done or failed to do that fills you with dismay? What is laudable? What
is ludicrous?"
Groovy, man. Let's get it on.

Last year was great for American independent cinema; this year, not so much. The lineup for
the 35th annual Telluride Film Festival has
been announced, and only two U.S. filmmakers made the cut -- Paul Schrader ( Adam Resurrected) and Tim Disney ( American Violet). In addition, David Fincher
will be there to screen his cut of Zodiac and to accept the festival's Silver
Medallion.
According to Michael Jones at Variety's festival blog, the scarcity of
U.S. films is simply the result of not very many homegrown films being submitted. Some likely
candidates, like Darren Aronofsky's The
Wrestler and the Coens' Burn After
Reading, chose to focus on other festivals. Other contenders, like Revolutionary Road, Milk, and W., aren't done yet. The writers' strike and the
big studios' ongoing financial problems with their art house divisions also contributed to the
dearth of American product.
It looks like a fantastic foreign lineup, though, with 22 films from 14 different countries. You
can see the full list here (and there might be some
late additions), but some of the highlights include: Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky (U.K.), Philippe Claudel's
I've Loved You So Long (France), Kim
Ji-Woon's The Good, the Bad and the
Weird (South Korea), and Ari Folman's animated Waltz with Bashir (Israel).
The Telluride fest takes place over Labor Day Weekend every year in the small mountain town in
southwestern Colorado. To maintain its reputation as a down-to-earth, unglamorous,
it's-all-about-the-movies festival, the organizers don't announce the lineup until the last minute,
thus avoiding most of the hype and celebrity-gawking that plagues Sundance. Cinematical's
Kim Voynar is there, so watch for her coverage over the weekend.
