UK based magazine PC GAMER has reviewed GTA IV and it has received a score of 92 percent and been
awarded their 'must buy' badge. Bottom line is the game looks great and the keyboard and mouse
combination is effortless to use. There is the odd issue including framerate issues, but none of
these are determined incredibly serious by the reviewer.

img class=face src=http://planet.ubuntu.com/heads/scottritchie.png alt= The MediaTomb software is
extremely powerful, however it's a serious pain to get it working.nbsp; I had one task in mind: get
my videos folder playable on my Dad's PS3 by streaming.nbsp; It took me about 2 hours to set up and
configure by manually a href=http://mediatomb.cc/dokuwiki/transcoding:transcodingediting a config
file and creating some custom scripts/a - and that was after Inbsp;even learned what UPNP streaming
is and which software I had to download in the first place.br /br /In the end, however, it worked
beautifully.nbsp; My dad could click quot;search for media serversquot;nbsp;on the Playstation,
have it discover my computer, then he could just click videos and find the one to play.nbsp; In the
background, MediaTomb was silently transcoding the .mkv format (which the PS3 doesn't understand)
to MPEG2.br /br /strongWe can do so much better/strongbr /br /Imagine how amazing an easy interface
to mediatomb could be. nbsp;I could right click my Videos folder, select sharing options, and then
check a box for quot;stream media in this folder over the network.quot;nbsp; Instead of manually
editing configuration files and editing scripts, I click a button that says I have a Playstation,
and it sets that all up automatically.nbsp; I never even hav to learn what codecs are, what
UPNPnbsp;does, or even that I'm using MediaTomb.br /br /This could be a major feature in
Ubuntu.nbsp; This is something where we can easily outclass Apple and Microsoft, who seemed to be
more worried about copy protection then actually letting you watch your own movies.nbsp; It could
even be a selling point for the Best Buy clerk trying to explain the boxed Ubuntu copy to a console
gamer.br /br /strongThis requires real work to do/strongbr /br /On a personal
note, nbsp;Inbsp;haven't made a post in a few weeks. nbsp;Real life has been very hectic.nbsp; I
moved back in with my parents to save some money, but the situation has become clearly unlivable
for me and I'm finding it very hard to spend enough time on open source.nbsp; There's a
href=https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ScottRitchieso much/a for me to do in the coming months, and it'd be a
real shame if Jaunty wasn't as good as it could be because I was too busy doing quot;realquot; work
so I could get out of the house.br /br /I'd really like to get more involved with making things
like this much easier for every day human beings.nbsp; I'm going to be visiting some apartments
tomorrow in preparation for moving out, however I'm not sure if I'll have the savings to do it
without making a huge financial risk.nbsp; Inbsp;may get stuck in a menial job just to pay rent,
working even less on Ubuntu than I am now.nbsp; Or, I might luck out and land a job at a place like
Canonical, and be able to spend 80 hours a week just doing what I love.nbsp; I can't help but feel
optimistic in this community.br /

Boing Boing -
1 days and 7 hours ago
Earlier on Boing Boing, Cory blogged that President-elect Barack Obama has appointed Net Neutrality
advocates and "virtual worlds nuts" Kevin Werbach and Susan Crawford to co-chair his FCC transition
team. Okay, so we might know the guy as Kevin Werbach out here in meatspace, but to his Terror Nova
Guild buddies, he's better known as Supernovan Jenkins (the first name presumably a reference to
Werbach's Supernova tech conference series), and he's a Level 70 Tauren Shaman. Livejournaler
Waltermonkey opines on the deeper meaning of Werbach's WoW identity: What does this tell us about
him, as a person, as a gamer, as a government official? I will attempt to translate all the
dorkese. 1. - CULTURAL RELATIVISM Every player in WoW belongs to one of two warring factions,
Alliance or Horde. Werbach is Horde. Children often choose to be Alliance because they perceive
them as "the good guys", but students of history (both ours and Azeroth's) recognize that Alliance
culture is based on medieval European culture and Horde culture is based on the indigenous cultures
that were supplanted by the West. Werbach is a Tauren (a minotaur), which basically makes him a
Native Kalimdorian. The Tauren revere nature, living in wigwams near giant totem poles. As a Shaman
(see below), he could also have chosen a troll (blue-skinned Jamaican-like monster) or an orc
(green-skinned Klingon-like monster), so there must be something about the cow-man that appeals to
his liberal guilt. Read the whole thing: victory or death! yes we can! (Waltermonkey; thanks Drew
Coombs of Project Lore! Recompense of phat lewt, reagents, and pizza await thee.)...br

With Midway's holiday hopes (and financial future) pinned on Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, it
appears the reviewers aren't going to help the company out. Barring major outlier Giant Bomb and
its 5/5, most outlets appear to be sticking around 80 and below. If it does well at retail, MK vs.
DC may help prevent the publisher from hearing an ominous voice-over: "Finish him!"
GamePro (80/100): "Though far from a technical fighting game, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe exceeds
expectations by delivering a solidly enjoyable casual fighter. The Mature-rated gore is missed, but
the core combat here feels more confident and energetic than it has in years."
IGN (75/100): "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is fun and a solid entry into the franchise, but I
doubt many folks will find it entertaining past a rental. Casual players will punch through the
storyline before burning out after getting stumped by one or two Kombo Challenges, while Mortal
Kombat fans will have trouble accepting the toned down Fatalities and somewhat slower
gameplay."
GameSpy (70/100): "Though MK vs. DC purports to shake up the franchise, the reality is that among
the many new touches that the game adds it still lacks the depth of other fighters available today.
Again, it doesn't feel dramatically different from its predecessors, save for new mini-game modes
and a big facelift. The movesets are rather generic (most are a variation of "down, forward,
button") and feel a tad antiquated. Its big hook (the crossover license) can't justify the
relatively shallow fighting on hand."
1UP (B-): (Calculated as 67 on Metacritic) "MK vs. DCU is an oddly enjoyable distraction from
"real" fighters. Its masher-friendly controls appeal to me in a casual-gamer way, and the midmatch
minigames (damage-percentage tugs-of-war, airborne ass-kickings with the defender mirroring the
aggressor's button-presses in a bid for dominance) give the fights a sort of party-game vibe."

Synergy. Can you dig it? Sony does, finally noticing those 14 million accounts stranded on the
console-side of PlayStation Network. We imagine the meeting went a little something like this:
Exec One: You see, we've got 14 million people over here [*motions to his right*]. But what if we
could take them [*lifts his hands up*] and stick 'em over here, too? [*motions back to his
left*]
Exec Two: So are you gonna eat that last Mint Milano or what?
Exec One: No -- well ... let's split it.
Exec Two: Deal.
The result? PSN IDs are being incorporated into PlayStation.com and, at a later date,
PlayStation.Blog. Doing so will make your friends list and other features accessible through a web
browser -- oh my! On a solemn note, these changes bring PlayStation Underground to its inevitable
end, but members can hold on to some of the good times by merging their Underground accounts with
their PSN IDs. And this is only the beginning, promises PSN senior director Susan Panico: "before
this year is over we'll have more enhancements for your gamer profile." Dare we say, a New
PlayStation Experience?
