South Korea has just leased half of all the arable land in Madagascar according to the
Financial Times. This has stirred quite a debate in the Malagasy blogosphere about land
sovereignty and economic development. It is still unclear whether the land deal has actually been
signed by both parties. Meanwhile, bloggers are arguing whether this sort of deal should be
considered “neo-colonialism”.
South Korea has just struck a 99 year deal with Madagascar to lease an area half the size of
Belgium to grow palm oil and no less than half of South Korea’s corn demands [..] Carl
Atkins, of consultants Bidwells Agribusiness, said Daewoo Logistics' investment in Madagascar was
the largest it had seen. “The project does not surprise me, as countries are looking to
improve food security but its size it does surprise me.”
A few hours later, a follow-up
article in the Financial Times added that Daewoo Logistics would not have to pay
fees for the lease, but would instead provide the means to allow exploitation and development of
the land.
A few hours later, a truly astonishing new angle on the story emerged. Guess how much South Korea
had paid for its 99 year lease? Answer: Zip. Zero. Nada. Not a cent. The sum total of the
benefits for Madagascar, according to a Daewoo spokesman? “We will provide jobs for them by
farming it, which is good for Madagascar.” This in a country where 3.5% of people are on
WFP food aid...
The benefits for South Korea, on the other hand:
“We want to plant corn there to ensure our food security. Food can be a weapon in this
world,” said Hong Jong-wan, a manager at Daewoo. “We can either export the harvests
to other countries or ship them back to Korea in case of a food crisis.”
The Malagasy government has yet to release an official statement on the issue. Reuters reports that the deal is far from being
finalized. Daewoo Logistics, however, has issued several statements that contest the veracity of
the articles.
In
another report, the Maeil Gyeongje said experts believe the FT report, with its provocative
talk of “neo-colonialism” and “pirates,” was intended as a warning
against an increased Asian presence in Africa, long considered Europe’s backyard. The piece
did include a quote from a Daewoo Logistics official, however, who said Madagascar was quite
sensitive about this issue because when China invests, it only goes after its own profits
[..]
The JoongAng Ilbo, meanwhile, released an
editorial blasting the FT, asking why the paper was turning a blind eye to British Jatropha
farms in Madagascar (used for biodiesel fuel) and French plantations on the island while going
after a Korean company only. And besides, the land Daewoo is acquiring is undeveloped, the new
farms will provide employment, and the Madagascar government will be taking a 30% cut of the farm
profits in taxes.”
Reactions to news of the land deal were heated and diverse in the Malagasy blogosphere:
The Malagasy diaspora website Sobika
reported on the deal (Fr) moments after the Financial Times and asked their readers
to react. Over 100 comments were posted on the articles within a few days. In a follow-up article, Sokiba speculates that the outrage expressed
on the internet has led the company deny the conditions of the deal [Fr].
The outrage is far from being unanimous though. Some bloggers feel that the land deal could
benefit Madagascar by increasing productivity on parts of the land. Aiky on the
community blog Malagasy Miray
adds [Mg]:

The advantages as seen from a less emotional perspective:
- The new employment prospects for the farmers which in turn would lead to additional source of
revenues.
- The exploitation of lands that were thought to be of little value and that could be still
exploited after the lease.
- the chain reaction from such increase in revenues [..]
- the potential improvement in the status of the national roads and other facilities in that part
of the country.
- A possible incentive to stop the exodus from the rural areas
On The Cyber Observer, a lawyer and blogger in Antananarivo, Andrydago, had the
the
amazing foresight to raise the legal issue of the sovereignty of land and foreign investment
in October, a full month before this controversy. It is striking that the laws that make this
lease permissible were amended earlier this year:
Recently, the new Malagasy investment law: act 2007-036 of January 14th, 2008, has brought a very
key change concerning the possibility for foreigners to own their land in Madagascar. This law
provided that foreign companies or foreign investors (individuals who have been granted with
investor visa), can buy Malagasy land under the following conditions:
1. the land has to be used exclusively for professional exploitation. Any personal use and
exploitation which is different from the nature of exploitation he “promised” to the
Malagasy governement, are forbidden. If there is a breach of such condition, the governement can
legally withdraw its title of land ownership;
2. the foreign company or investor has to submit its business plan (investment planning in
Madagascar) to a public body named EDBM (Economic Development Board Madagascar). Such plan has to
describe and detail its intended business and its pertaining investment in Madagascar;
3. the foreign company or investor has to apply for a formal approval named “authorization
for land acquisition” before the EDBM in order to be allowed to purchase legally a Malagasy
land. Such authorization if granted, gives to the foreign company or investor the same rights as
for a Malagasy entity to purchase and to own land in Madagascar.
Hey guess. So the ole blinking folder with question mark appeared with startup today. I inserted
the startup disk and booted from that and then selected the appropriate HD and everything seems to
be working well now.
is there anything else i should do to check my hd or anything? just to make sure everything is in
order?
Feeding Frenzy 2: ShipWreck Showdown
Publisher: Oberon media
Developer: Sprout Games
Genre: Arcade Action
System: Xbox 360 (Xbox LIVE) Overview:
Big fish eats small fish. Its a fact of life, and is a saying that well explains the worlds state
of life. Feeding Frenzy takes this saying quite literally, as you play as a fish in the big sea
whose only purpose is to eat small fish and became a big fish to eat even bigger fish. Sounds
simple right? Well it is, almost too much so. The game isn't broken(well, controls may be) but it
certainly does what its supposed to, if by 'supposed to' means bore you in little over an hour.
Gameplay:
The gameplay revolves around trying to devour other smaller fish and grow larger, so that you can
eat the larger fish. Thats the formula for every level you play, except for the occasional bonus
level which has you doing some some mini game to attain a higher score. The thing is, its all been
down before, and in 1995 at that. Playing this game reminded me of a lesser quality version of
Odell Down Under, a similar game where the gameplay is nearly identical. However, Feeding Frenzy is
far more simplistic. There is usually only a single type of fish you are able to eat, and that
will, for most at least, get extremely boring as the game progresses, since there is really no
change to gameplay. This results in a very repetitive experience all throughout story mode, as
there is far too little depth in the game to really hold anyone other then a casual gamer's
interest for very long. The 'not-so-different' special levels you do every so often do little to
keep your interest.
The controls are quite a mess. Constantly, you'll end up drifting into the mouth of a bigger fish
on accident because of the Astroids-style drift that happens after releasing the controller stick.
It also makes devouring small fish a pain, at least until you get the Vacuum ability to suck up
fish.
The good news is there is co-op, and if you have a relative who doesn't generally like video games,
this is a great game that can be played with them. The game's difficulty is easy and its learning
curve is non-existant. Just try to make sure your friend or family doesn't fall asleep while
playing it.
Try doing this for just 10 levels and see if your not sick of it.
Graphics:
The charming underwater theme of the game fits very well with the mood of the game. Vibrant and
colorful, but all too bland and reptitive. The backgrounds repeat, the same fish sprites are used
constantly, and all in all its just becomes boring after the 15th level of the same background and
fish. I guess the solution Sprout games used for this was to invert the fish colors every so often.
Meh.
Sound:
The tranquil music does its work, like the rest of the game, to make you feel tired, and sort of
relaxed. The creepy sound effect you hear of the guy saying "Feeding Frenzy" is more likely to
scare you then relax you though. Sound effects for eating fish will get annoying after a few hours
of continuous play, but hey, at least they didn't have you hear the fish screaming bloody murder
every time you eat them.
Closing comments:
Feeding Frenzy is one of those games that your sister would play on an internet game site rather
then a game you'd be wanting to spend money for. After all, there are some almost identical flash
games you could play at no cost. I suppose Feeding Frenzy's biggest offense that it commits is just
not being all that fun, even though it generally does what its supposed to. Which I suppose, is
make you get very drowzy.
Hi, I upgraded my unlocked 2G iPhone with T-Mobile from 2.1 to 2.2
After the update was complete, my iPhone turns on to show me a message to connect to iTunes.
I connect to iTunes, iTunes says the T-Mobile sim card is not supported although I look at the top
of my iPhone and I am getting full service from T-Mobile, so my iPhone is in fact still
unlocked.
I insert a blank AT&T sim card, iPhone says "Waiting for Activation This May Take Some
Time."
Sync it to iTunes, iTunes doesn't do anything; just acts like everything is normal.
Now, I can use all the features of the iPhone except the phone because I have "No Service" with a
blank AT&T sim card.
I decided to insert my T-Mobile sim card and my iPhone tells me again to sync to iTunes.
So how do I bypass this activation problem? I can still use my iPhone as an iPod, I guess, but it
won't do anything with my T-Mobile sim card, except show me I have full service but need to sync to
iTunes, and when I do, iTunes won't recognize the sim card.
Not sure if this is allowed here on macrumors, but looking for a quickpwn 2.2 mirror. I've been
trying to download the files via my iPhone since it downloads 3x the speed of my dialup, but the
links on the dev blog won't download for some reason, so trying to find a link to mediafire or
sendspace. The couple I've found so far seem to be windows versions :(
If this isn't allowed, sorry, delete and I'll consider myself warned...
edit: nevermind, Safari DL plugin will not download them, guess this will have to wait until later
tonight or tomorrow sometime, ugh! Damn dialup is such a pain
i have a 1st gen iphone, jailbroken and unlocked with ziphone on 1.1.4. i want to be able to get
apps from the app store, so i guess i have to upgrade to 2.0. can i do this without bricking my
phone? thanks!
I really want to run Ubuntu, but it shouldn’t be this hard. Plugging in an SD card reader
that I picked up from Best Buy shouldn’t cause a hard freeze of my system (on both Gutsy
Gibbon and Intrepid Ibex):
The card reader works fine in Windows. At this point, I’m honestly thinking about crashing
the Ubuntu
Developer Summit that will be held in December at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA to pick
peoples’ brains.
Okay, so Ubuntu freezes hard when you plug in the card reader (sometimes). Unless you report that
bug, no one will know to fix it. So I’m trying to follow these instructions for debugging removable
devices to do a good Ubuntu bug report, and finding that the instructions are pretty
out-of-date.
For example, you’re supposed to kill, then start gnome-volume-manager in a foreground mode
to see debugging messages. Except that the latest version of Ubuntu (Intrepid Ibex) doesn’t
even install gnome-volume-manager. Oh, you can install it (and you’ll get the sound-juicer
package with it). But when you try to run it, you’ll get this helpful message:
It’s easy to find the
source code of gnome-volume-manager online, but the relevant function is more cute than
informative. Searching for ["live and let die" gnome-volume-manager] finds this post where someone tries to guess
what the message means:
Fedora no longer uses gnome-volume-manager to auto-mount removable media —
it’s now built into Nautilus. I am guessing that “live and let die” means
“hey, someone else is already managing this” but that is pure speculation on my part.
So if you get that error message it just means that you shouldn’t have been running it in
the first place.
With that clue, you can go back and find this thread where Ubuntu developer wgrant
helpfully lets someone know “gnome-volume-manager is no longer necessary either - nautilus
does the mounting now.” It is good to find an Ubuntu developer posting answers online. But
now I’m not sure how to generate Nautilus debugging logs akin to the gnome-volume-manager
logs that fellow Ubuntu folks could use to debug the hard freeze. At least I do know how to
generate udevmonitor logs using the
new udevadm program.
Please pardon the melancholy tone. It’s just frustrating that plugging in an SD card reader
can cause sporadic freezes on my Ubuntu computer. And if you plug in the SD card reader often
enough, you may corrupt
your system. I do see progress from Hardy Heron to Intrepid Ibex with several annoyances
fixed, but there’s still a way to go.
So I am trying to get a new mouse for my macbook. I don't really want a portable wireless mouse,
since if I am away from home, i have no problem using the trackpad. However, if I wanted to get a
mouse for gaming, I see that there are some issues with compatibility with macs. I want a mouse
that has the ability to switch sensitivities and map buttons.
Age: 37 Hometown: Fall River, Massachusetts Where do you now live?: East Freetown, Massachusetts Where would you most like to live?: Anywhere on the pacific coastline of Costa
Rica. Who was your first "hero" in life?: My Uncle Louie. What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?: If there are
waves, surf, if not, drink beer and paint. What is your favorite color?: Today it's red. Who (or what) do you love?: Who: My family. What: Life.
Wooster: Who and/or what are some of your influences?
The graffiti movement of the late seventies and early eighties is probably my greatest influence.
The over the top use of color and the scale of the work is something that has stayed with me.
When I attended college (my first exposure to fine art) I discovered the abstract expressionist
movement, I found I had a strong connection with the artists of this movement especially with
their notion of making it more about the act of painting than the painting itself. More recently
the street art movement has impacted my work greatly. When I discovered Wooster Collective in
2004, I changed, and so did my work. When I began researching the artists involved with Wooster
and
other urban influenced artists on the internet I was like,"Holy shit, I thought I was the only
one using old school graffiti and spray paint in my studio work." Ignorance is bliss I tell you.
So, rather than naming names I truly believe every artist I have been exposed to since then has
influenced my work to some degree.
Wooster: What other artists do you most admire?
I admire any artist that dedicates their life to creating, from the many successful urban
influenced gallery artists to the 15 year old kid bombing his neighborhood with stickers he stole
from the post office.
Wooster: How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?
Imagine there is a man in a canvas walled room. Loud music begins to play which makes the man act
a fool. He begins running around exploding spray paint cans, tagging, and squirting liquid paint
through ketchup bottles. He doesn't care much about the color he uses as long as it contrasts the
last color. The man hears a voice calling out - red, violet, light blue, green. The voice is the
man's own voice. When the voice subsides the man is finished. Take the canvas walls down and put
them up in a gallery. This is my art.
Wooster: What other talent would most like to have?
I wish I could sing. Well, I can sing. I guess I mean sing in tune.
Wooster: What do you fear the most?
Death.
Wooster: What is your greatest ambition?
I'd have to give you two, one I have no control over and one that I do have control over. I'd
like to earn a living from my art or be a college painting professor. Although I'd love for both
to come to fruition.

I bought a MacPro 2.66 from Apple as a refurb. months ago. I had the local Apple Store Genius
install a Wifi card and all was well about two weeks ago. Now my Internet speeds crawl and then
bounce back up. I've cut out of the chain Netgear router and switch.
I replaced an Apple Extreme.
I've had Mediacom out three times.
I've been on Apple Care support staff by phone.
I've checked the speed a Mac directly connected to the Apple Extreme via Ethernet, and with a
MacBook Pro. Good speeds there.
Today I dragged the MacPro to the local Genius Bar and they pulled it and reseated it, and made
sure all the antenna wires were tight. In the Apple Store the speeds to two WWW Internet speed
sites screamed.
Back home I got initial joy and then I'm back down in the dumper again with speed. There must be
some environmental thing going on here. Yes I do have a wireless 5.8 mhz phone. But I've dropped
the Extreme to the lower mhz. One of my neighbors has a Wifi network going, but that has been up
for many months.
Time to drill a hole in the floor I guess and drop an Ethernet cable into it. Any last minute ideas
before I put up the construction tape;)
Ok so my friend just dropped his Iphone-2g off and i dont know anything about it. I guess his mom
got it from some chinese people in china town and they say its jailbroken but needs to be
unlocked....ive successfully jailbroken my iphone 3g so i know a little bit about what im doing.
Anyways so It appears to be jailbroken with FW-1.1.1 but its not unlocked. So i looked up a few
vids on youtube on how to unlock a jailbroken 1.1.1 iphone. But it requires me to access "
isntaller" but for some reason i Cant connect to WIFI. Its just greyed out and says " no Wi-Fi" .
So my question is whats wrong with this phone? and how should i go about unlocking this 1.1.1
iphone-2g?

I can't believe I bought this, I should've gone for the iphone 3G. My friend fooled me into
thinking the ipod touch is like the iphone, but it isn't. It just has the same interface. I you
want to download apps off of it, you need wifi. If you want to surf the web, you need wifi. If you
want to watch youtube, you need wifi. You need wifi for EVERYTHING
And it's rather annoying because I travel outside of my house quite a bit. During those times,
there is little or NO wifi available. When there is wifi, there is always a security key encryped
into the wireless, and I can't access it. The only thing that i can do is probably listen to music
(like any other ipod) and play a couple games. In that case I might as well have just gotten an
ipod nano, or the ipod classic.
If I had the iPhone, I would be able to download apps, surf the web, download music, text people,
call people, take pictures, and IM people! Well, without wifi on the ipod touch, guess what? You
just left out ALL these features.
I also do not like the design of the ipod touch. In my opinion, it is WAY too thin, and the
stainless steel is a bit annoying. When you hold it for a long time, the steel turns the ipod into
a giant grease ball. I had to buy an extra grip that cost $30 just to solve this problem. By the
way the grip is annoying too. When I put it in my pocket, it is extremely hard to take out, and
when I take it out, it's got all this dust and lent stuck on it, and I have to rub it all off,
which takes about 5 minutes, everytime I take it out of my pocket!!
Now that I wasted $230, I have no money to save up for the iPhone. I am getting probably $200 for
christmas, but that is not enough. I have Sprint, I have a WHOLE year and a half left to go before
my contract ends, and my parents aren't willing to cancel and get me the iphone. I have no job, I
am 15. What should I do? I am stuck with this lent/grease attracting device that has almost no key
features, and is just like any other iPod. Exept it's touch screen, and it's more expensive.
Not trying to start a war, I just feel like I had to type all my feelings out, alright? :p
The king of Web video is finally set to join the live video realm today. In 30 minutes,
YouTube Live will introduce a mix of
real-time concert footage with that of “YouTuberati” such as LisaNova, Tay Zonday (Mr. “Chocolate Rain”),
“Fred,” Chad Vader, and the
“Will it
Blend” guys.
And while many of us are still wondering why YouTube is taking the show on the road at all,
I’m ready to call this for what it is: a wasted effort.
YouTube is Your Choice, YouTube Live is Theirs
On one hand, the last time an international set of concerts became so publicized (July 7, 2007
during the historic Live
Earth orchestration), it garnered a massive amount of attention. Millions tuned in
to the coverage. So you think YouTube might milk that process a little bit for itself given the
chance.
But the effect of live Web coverage is really conditional on what’s made available.
YouTube promises things like “main stage, backstage, and off stage” views. Meanwhile,
cameras at Live Earth were managed only by teams in charge of the equipment. It was your
choice of concert - in the U.S., Europe, Asia, etc. - that dictated what you could see
at any given moment. And that kind of choice really piqued peoples’ interest for days, even
weeks on end.
Simply Put, Chad Vader Shines when Chad Vader is Edited
Indeed, Chad Vader in his element (delayed release) and Chad Vader before a live audience sound
like two very different things, and I don’t think I want to see the latter. Sitcoms are
different than standup routines, basically put.
YouTube Live is Dipping its Toe in the Wrong Body of Water
Change is good, and change is often necessary to stay loose and fresh and exciting. But change
should be worthwhile. It should entail a move to a better place. YouTube Live seems less
progressive and more tangential than anything else.
YouTube has satisfied the ADD
generation since its founding. To toss a real-time program of the magnitude of this cross-Pacific
adventure is just off. At least in a numerical, we-need-lots-of-eyes-to-make-this-sparkle sort of
way.
Post-show, YouTube and gang might net a decent set of views. A sort of recoupment, if you like.
But will we be astonished by the stats? I think not.
Ode to an Error in the Making
To be fair, with just minutes to go before the cameras roll, it’s anyone’s guess how
Katy Perry, Will.i.am, Soulja Boy, et. al., will make or break the evening. My presumption
however is that the cross-Pacific lineup won’t be considered very magical when all is said
and done.
Why? YouTube is on-demand. That’s its shtick. Its joie de vivre.
Introducing a live feature or a whiz-bang live event at this point seems more like an anomaly
than something that the company will really popularize in its own space to great effect.

I thought about this, but I wanted to see if I was right so I guess I just asked here.
Since a Jailbreak was released today for 2.2 iPhones, couldn't someone with an iPhone just download
2.2, Jailbreak it, SSH into it, get the iPhone Maps.app, and then post it so we can use it on our
iPod's? Then technically we should be able to use street view?
In theory, this is the same thing that happened on 1.1.1 when we did not have the Weather, Stocks,
Maps, etc. apps that the iPhone had.
