An Activision press release that just landed in our inbox breathlessly details every single
promotional tie-in that Guitar
Hero World Tour's packing. Really, it's a huge list! Here it is, straight from the
release: "Ampeg, Audio-Technica, EMG Pickups, Ernie Ball, Evans Drumheads, Guitar Center, Krank
Amplification, Mackie, Marshall, Orange County Drum & Percussion, Pork Pie Percussion, Regal
Tip, Sabian cymbals, Vox and Zildjian drumsticks."
Notice anything missing? Considering it's busy trying to sue everyone
but Activision, even retailers,
it's unsurprising that guitar-maker (and
patent-claimer) Gibson is nowhere to be seen.
Of course, the total absence of any Gibson branding on Guitar Hero World Tour's Genericasters was
our first clue but it would appear that lack of cooperation extends to the in-game experience as
well. So, while you trick out your virtual drum kit with gear from the above purveyors, your axe
will remain hopelessly generic. Isn't there any game in town besides Gibson and Rock Band BFF's
Fender?

"Hang on a minute," I thought as I played Guitar Hero: World Tour at
Activision's booth at the Leipzig Games Convention, "Isn't this Rock Band?" The layout on
the World Tour screen is almost identical to Harmonix's series, with the guitars on either
side, the drums scrolling down the middle (with the same horizontal bars displaying bass notes,
except in World Tour they're purple, not orange) and the vocals on top. The star power
meter, along with the rock meter, is kept in the top left, which means that if you're playing drums
or bass guitar, it's not very easy to see.
It took a little while to get used to the drums. The two-tier structure with the cymbals feels
great, but can be slightly confusing at first. The drums are a lot bouncier than the Rock Band ones, making them not only quieter, but
more fun to play. With Rock Band, the bounce seems to come more from the way the sticks
are held, rather than out of the structural nature of the pads. Not hearing the constant thok,
thok is definitely preferable too, as anyone who has bought silencing pads for their Rock
Band drums will know. [ Editor's note: Rock Band 2 also features quieter,
bouncier drums.]

While there's likely nothing that will convince most folks of the merits of a full-size,
$180 wooden guitar controller, those still on the fence about this particular piece of excess
may be interested to know that the good people of PS3 Fanboy recently got their hands on one, and
they've now offered up some initial impressions. As you might expect, they found it to definitely
be a hefty device, but far from an unwieldy one, with the buttons as familiar as even and the strum
bar in particular a significant improvement over other Guitar Hero and Rock Band guitars. Peak also
doesn't look to have cut any corners when it comes to the little details, with even the strap made
of a thick fabric that makes it more comfortable to wear.

Why should you put a dent in your wallet when there are so many great free applications out
there for the iPhone and iPod Touch? There are tons of games for the devices, but
the vast majority of them cost money, so we’ve sorted through and located 12 totally free
ones for you to throw on your gadgets and entertain yourself throughout the day.
Unlike with Firefox or WordPress addons, where we always tell you not to load everything we list,
there doesn’t seem to be any problem with loading lots of iPhone or iPod Touch
apps. Just make sure you have enough memory for the programs and you can easily load
all 12 of these on your device.
Originally this list included Tris, but with yesterday’s news that it would be removed we took it
off the list. It’s really too bad as it was a great port of the game.
Blanks - A simple
word game that gives you a definition and four choices as to what the word may be.Â
Fun and educational all at once.
Cannon Challenge - Made by the Discovery Channel, Cannon Challenge is based on their
show Future Weapons, and firing a Non-Line-Of-Sight (NLOS) cannon at targets of varying
distance. Equal parts addicting and challenging. As you can tell from
the screenshot, the game is played entirely in the horizontal position.
Crash Landing - This game
uses the iPhone and iPod Touch accelerometer to control the descent of a starship, aiming to land
on the platform on the moon. If you have as much luck as I did, you’ll see the
message in the above screenshot a lot.
Cube Runner - You use
the accelerometer to pilot a ship through a landscape littered with mysterious polygonal cubes
that have appeared. Though the ship lacks any sort of gun, it feels a bit like the
classic Starfox game from the Super Nintendo system. New maps can be designed and
shared with friends.
Dactyl - A fast-paced
game of bomb diffusing that helps you practice your dexterity and frazzles your nerves as bombs
explode.
Fire Drop - A puzzle game that tries to
test your speed and your willingness to see how far you can push your luck. The more
cauldrons you burn at once, the higher the score, but make sure you don’t fill the entire
screen!
Fit2Vote - Politics come to
iPhone gaming with Fit2Vote. You will be asked to name who said the quote, Obama or
McCain, and tilt your phone to the left for the Democrat and to the right for the
Republican. Once you have gotten 50 correct, you are deemed “Fit2Vote.”
Frotz - An
interface for playing text-based adventure games that harken back to games like Zork,
Bard’s Tale and Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy from the 1980’s.
Othello - Also known by the name
“Reversi” on just about every Windows computer sold for years, it is the familiar
game played on an 8 X 8 grid with the object of controlling the majority of the board at the end
of the game.
SimStapler - Why risk
dangerous stapler injuries by using a real stapler? SimStapler provides you with all
the fun and excitement of real stapling in a fun, safe, manner. App has an old
school Mac look, and with it being a red Swingline stapler, you can feel free to make Office
Space jokes.
Tap Tap Revenge - The perfect free game
for all of the Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution fans who need a fix whenever they are away
from home. A bit difficult to play on the iPod Touch as it lacks an external
speaker, but works fine with headphones.
Warcraft Characters - Not
so much a game in and of itself, but a way for you to look up World of Warcraft characters on the
go and see their stats, skills and equipment no matter where you are.

MTV has announced another set of performers for the upcoming Video Music Awards. The 2008 edition
will feature Lil Wayne, Kid Rock and the Jonas Brothers. Already confirmed by the music
television channel, include Rihanna, T.I., Pink and Paramore. The word Is that while Britney
Spears is not on the confirmed list of performances for this round, she is reportedly in
negotiations with MTV. The 2008 VMAs go off on September 7th in Los Angeles. Rock and roll has
made a big time comebackÂ… and music industry people are linking it to video games.
Yes, you heard correctly. The popularity of recent games including ‘Guitar
Hero’ and ‘Rock Band’ is linked to increased album sales
and digital downloads for rock artists that are licensed to the games. According to NPD Group
Market Research, these video games took in more than 935-million in profit last year and
theyÂ’ve helped out other markets as well. Guitar Hero faceoffs in school auditoriums
are turning teens into rock music fans, and Rock Band competitions at bars are helping bring-up
revenue. Industry analysts say that the rock video games have even increased interest in guitars.
Rock on. According to industry standards, itÂ’s no surprise that music video games
are bringing in the big-bucks. The Entertainment Software Association said that in 2007, the
gaming industry for only PC and console software brought-in 9.5-billion-dollars. Plus, a report
completed by IBISWorld puts game revenue totals at about 40-billion for 0-8.
