with some people/a -- many Verizon Wireless stores a
href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/11/blackberry-storm-lines"sold out/a of their first batches
yesterday. But while Verizon initially promised quick Internet orders, shipment for new orders has
been delayed to "by Dec. 15." This is potentially bad news for RIM, whose third quarter ends Nov.
29. (See below for details.)/p pWhy the delay? a
href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/22/blackberry-storm-shipments-delayed-due-to-apparent-version-glitc/"Engadget
reports/a that Verizon is being forced to downgrade the phones in its inventory to an older version
of RIM's operating system to potentially avoid a "security glitch," which was first alleged by a
href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008/11/21/the-real-story-behind-the-verizon-blackberry-storm-os/"mobile
blog Boy Genius Report/a. (We don't know if this is true. We're checking with Verizon and will
update if we hear back.)/p p style="padding-left: 30px;"a
href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/22/blackberry-storm-shipments-delayed-due-to-apparent-version-glitc/"Engadget/a:
Supposedly the Storm was set to launch with OS version 4.7.0.82, but due to a last-minute security
glitch every last handset had to be downgraded to .65 -- a surely time-consuming task that resulted
in many fewer handsets in-store and online for release. Right now Verizon is indicating that orders
placed before noon on November 21 should ship on the 25th, those received after noon will ship on
December 5, and anything received on November 22 or later will not ship before December 15. That's
close enough to a certain major holiday to make BlackBerry-loving kids of all ages nervous./p
pNervous indeed -- and something that, if true, could potentially negatively impact RIM's Q3
results -- the quarter that ends Nov. 29 -- and Q4 guidance. We assume RIM's Q3 emdevice/em
shipments are at lower risk because, in theory, the phones have already been sold to Verizon, whose
staff is tinkering with them. (Though it's possible Verizon's orders in Q3 and Q4 will be lower
while they can't ship phones they already have.)/p pMore important: If thousands of people can't
buy new Storms until next month, they can't sign up to be new BlackBerry emservice/em subscribers
until next month -- which is part of RIM's Q4. Which could negatively impact RIM's Q3 subscriber
growth. How much? We don't know. But it's definitely not emgood/em news for RIM or Verizon./p pAnd
if the delay extends further into the Christmas buying season, it's even worse. Why? Besides
delaying Storm purchases, it could push on-the-fence buyers to consider other phones, such as
Apple's (AAPL) iPhone./p pThat could be happening already. We've seen some a
href="http://search.twitter.com/search?max_id=1018483140page=2q=storm+iphone"anecdotal evidence/a
-- like a href="http://twitter.com/MStokes/statuses/1018423941"multiple/a a

href="http://twitter.com/anivus/statuses/1018287199"conversations/a -- panning the Storm's
push-down touchscreen, which you have to press down hard to type with -- and dismissing the phone's
threat to Apple. (We a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/11/rim-blackberry-storm-review"think
it's a decent phone/a, but we personally find the keypad more gimmicky than helpful.)/p pstrongSee

invaders kidnap everyone's favorite right jolly old elf in this low-budget mixture of children's
comedy and sci-fi adventure. Christmas is not far away, and countless children are glued to their
family's TV sets, watching reports about Santa Claus (John Call). However, this is happening on
Mars, and leaders of the Red Planet aren't sure what to do for their kids who are pining away for a
visit from the gift-bearing earthling. Martian leader Kimar (Leonard Hicks) dispatches two of his
emissaries, the chronically grumpy Voldar (Vincent Beck) and the moronically cheerful Dropo (Bill
McCutcheon), to Earth to bring Santa back for a visit. After arriving on Earth, Voldar and Dropo
abduct two children, Betty (Donna Conforti) and Billy (Victor Stiles), and order the kids to show
them the way to Santa's workshop, from which all three are taken to Mars against their will. As
Santa, Betty, and Billy try to find a way back to Earth, Voldar becomes enraged with the Earth
kids, while the children bond more comfortably with the intellectually-challenged Dropo. Shot on a
shoestring budget on Long Island, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians has developed a rabid cult

My Apple TV has been showing this for the past 12 hours or so. I can access movies, tv shows,
etc... in the store by searching or viewing by genre, but I can't view the "top movies" and such. I
get a message saying the store is "temporarily unavailable" and to "try again later"
Is this happening to anyone else?

My iPod touch is part of my wireless network, but it can't load anything from the internet; apps,
Safari or YouTube. The other 2 computers connected via Ethernet are fine. Why is this
happening?
P.S. I have a Belkin G+ MIMO Cable router, and iPod touch 2.2 (It was fine until this lunchtime).

My situation. Two Apple computers, one iMac 2.8 Ghz and one MBP 2.16 Ghz, both with 10.5.5, an
Apple TV 160GB (with 2.3 software) and Airport Extreme (7.3.2 software). The AE is @ 5Ghz with
802.11n only (I got cordless speakers @ 2.4Ghz, so I chose the 5 Ghz for the AE)
I hooked the iMac to the AppleTV which is in the living room, next to the Airport Extreme.
Streaming HD-content on my AppleTV is surprisingly smooth (as it should be imho).
However, when I use AirTunes on AppleTV, after a few minutes the iMac gets disconnected from my AE,
leaving me without any internet connection and music from AirTunes. I have to 'disable' airport and
then 'enable' it again to get my internet connection working again. However, it will disconnect
again a few moments later. However, all the time this is happening, the WiFi internet connection on
my MBP and iPhone is working flawless.
This is driving me crazy, to say the least. Here's what I've done so far
- Used the MBP for streaming to airtunes: same problem as with the iMac. The internet connection
drops on my MBP, while on the iMac and iPhone, it's still working flawless
- Changed 5 Ghz to any available mode on the AE (802.11n with b/g; 2.4 Ghz).
- No wireless security
- No MAC-address security
- Reset the AE
- Shut down all the interfering appliances (such as my mobile phone and cordless speakers)
- Reinstalled OSX Leopard on my iMac (the MBP is a work-based machine and I refuse to reinstall it
for some airtunes problem).
- Reset the AppleTV
All without any luck. The internet connection dropped twice while writing this post and, like I
said, this is really driving me crazy. I haven't always had this problem, so I'm inclined to
believe this is a software problem. However, my software knowledge is quite limited: other than the
things I tried I have no clue what to do.
So any help is greatly appreciated.

For some reason Safari is draining about a gigabyte every 2-3 minutes. Even with only one or two
windows open. Not sure why the heck it's happening. I have to restart my computer to get the memory
back. Any suggestions on why this is happening?
thanks so much!

This happens to me at least twice a day. I click on an application, like the iPod, for example.
Instead of opening the application, the icons start wiggling, as though I had held the icon down
for a few seconds and wanted to move stuff around.
It started only happening with 2.1. Maybe it's some jailbroken app, but I can't figure out what is
causing it.
Anyone else having this happen? If so, what fixed it?
thanks

We've been among those who think that the government shouldn't be forcing cable providers to a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080713/1735351664.shtml"offer a la carte channels/a. While
people ialways/i insist that if they got a la carte cable, it would be cheaper, the facts are quite
different. The economics of providing a la carte through existing systems would greatly increase
overhead, and make it difficult to make things work. Most people would end up paying the same or
more -- but for fewer channels. Those who are complaining might be better off recognizing that when
they pay for cable they're a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20080530/0449231268.shtml"effectively/a just paying for what
they want -- and the other channels are freebies. br /br / Or, they can just realize that a la
carte TV is coming iwithout/i the need for government interference. Adam Thierer notes that there's
a growing movement of folks realizing that you can a
href="http://techliberation.com/2008/11/16/we-dont-need-to-mandate-a-la-carte-it-already-exists/"
target="_new"get an awful lot of television programming (legally) online these days/a. It's
reaching the point where we're finally moving towards a world that we predicted a
href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20050603/0231201_F.shtml"years ago/a that shows are
independent of channels or TV providers, and you can just get them directly online. That's already
leading some people to ditch TV service entirely, knowing they can get plenty of shows they want
online -- and all of this is happening without the government getting involved at all. So, can
anyone explain why it still makes sense for the government to get involved here?br /br /a

Two weeks ago my MBP was slowing down and crashing more and more often. I repaired the disk
permissions, repaired the disk itself, ran all the maintenance scripts and this seemed to clear
everything up.
Last week it started happening again, but this time nothing helped. The processor would just hang
for a few seconds, before making a bit of 'processing noise' and then hang again, over and over.
Also the HDD started clicking, in a bad way, loud and repetitive tapping. The only way to stop it
was to forcibly power it down. This would happen randomly, with seemingly no preference as to which
apps were open or what I was doing. Other symptoms also appeared such as Safari starting to quit on
me about 2 minutes after launch and files would take an age (2-3 mins for a small .doc) to
preview/load. Then a couple of hours ago I got a message in Disk Utility that my HDD was failing!
I've already got backups of almost everything on it, so it didn't take me long to get the rest off
asap!
Now then, I'm going to give Apple a call, and see what they say, but what can I expect? I haven't
abused it at all, in fact it's absolutely pristine. It's 8 months old and apart from a dead pixel,
this is the only thing to go wrong with it, in fact I was feeling pretty lucky compared to some
guys on here! What with the potential 8600 graphics problem, the dead pixel (very annoying when
online in IL-2!!) and now the HDD could I reasonably ask for a newer machine without the graphics
time-bomb? I'm guessing they'll replace the HHD or give me a new/refurb of my current mbp as the
most likely course. But should I accept a machine that has a built-in problem? And how would I know
the stress the graphics card has already been under?
I'm not trying to moan on about my case, or swindle Apple, I just want to know what you guys
think.
Cheers

Ok so over the past few days my iPhone has been really unstable. It's been freezing up/crashing,
the battery meter froze and my phone died without me knowing my battery was low. A lot of weird
things have been happening like 3G calls have been all distorted and fuzzy - I videotaped it it was
so weird, and I'm going to put it on YouTube soon.
My iPhone on many occasions has vibrated as if I have a text message when I have none. My friends
iPhone actually started ringing one day from the home screen - yet no one was calling him. Often I
have missed calls - yet my phone never rings and I just get a notification that I have a voice mail
(and when I call the person back they say it was ringing on their end for 6 rings or whatever).
So basically my iPhone has been acting mega weird. As of the past couple of days I hadn't got any
text messages from any of my friends. I just assumed everyone was busy (finals coming up and what
not). Anyway, so I just updated to 2.2, and as soon as my phone restarted, I slid to unlock, and I
got 25 text message pop ups in sequence one right after the other from the past couple of days...

us for a good few years now, with Steve Mann being the first recognized 24/7 lifecaster in 1994,
quickly followed by JenniCam in 1996.
Lifecasting now doesn’t necessarily mean you have to broadcast everything that happens in
your life, with more and more people choosing instead to post regular daily video updates or
important moments in their lives.
Justin.tv
In 2007, Justin Kan founded
Justin.tv, which started out with just him and a cap mounted Webcam but has since expanded to
other 24/7 broadcasters. It eventually became an open network allowing anyone and everyone to
broadcast their own TV channel.
Other sites offering similar services have since cropped up, with
UStream,
Stickam, and
Mogulus being amongst the most popular and well-known of them.
Live Suicide
But lifecasting may have just hit a huge bump in the road due to a Florida teenager killing
himself live on Justin.tv, all while being urged on by viewers and fellow commenters to the body
building forum he was an active member of.
The man, now identified as Abraham K
Biggs Jr, posted on the forum of BodyBuilding.com stating he was going to commit suicide on
Justin.tv. He posted a suicide note and a link to the live Webcast.
The poster is egged on to do it, and takes an overdose of pills live on Justin.tv. He then falls
asleep on the bed, still in full view of the camera, but because his breathing is still visible,
few people are worried.
The man’s personal details are then posted along with a plea to call the police.
Eventually, some of the forum members do call the cops, and 25 minutes later, they break in to
the guy’s home and cover the camera up.
Deathcasting
According to Blorge,
the medical examiner’s office in Broward County has now confirmed Biggs’ death.
Meanwhile, the 60 page forum thread has been deleted, as has the link to Biggs’ Webcam.
Justin.TV’s CEO Michael Seibel issued a statement has issued a statement, reading:
We regret that this has occurred and respect the privacy of the broadcaster and his family during
this time. We have policies in place to discourage the distribution of distressing content and
our community monitors the site accordingly. This content was flagged by our community, reviewed,
and removed according to our Terms of Service.
Who’s To Blame?
This clearly isn’t the fault of Justin.tv, but when the very nature of life includes death,
was this always bound to happen, and could it become a serious problem in this Internet age?
Live video means that incidents such as this could increase, and there’s very little anyone
watching can do, especially without having knowledge of the broadcasters personal details.
The Price Of Technology
I send my best to Biggs’ family, and hope that this incident doesn’t trigger
copycats. As for live streaming sites such as Justin.tv, I really don’t see what they can
do to prevent stuff like this from happening.
What’s important to remember is that the technology didn’t cause the death of this
young man, and he would have likely committed suicide if live streaming video didn’t exist.
It’s just very unfortunate that suicide can now be broadcast live to people on the
Internet.

Hackint0sh - iPod Touch -

Hi, I've been a longtime member of Hackint0sh, and a long-time iPhone modder, having j/b/a'd my
phone every time from 1.0.2>1.1.2>1.1.4>2.1. In general, I think that 2.1 is the best fw
yet, provided you install Backgrounder to allow apps to run in background. My issue is this: after
the latest update, I find that the icons are far quicker to "go wiggly" than before. This is
happening when I tap an app just to launch it. This isn't a big deal, but I am sure that there is a
way to change the time interval necessary for icons to go wiggly. Has anyone else experienced this,
or is it just my caffeine-shaky fingers? Does anyone know where in the file system this command
resides, and what to change? Thanks in advance.

HI,
new here
I think I deleted the user file that contains my password because it won't let me sign on, even to
reload OSX. The sign in screen comes up with my name on it, but won't accept my password.
Anyone know a way around this or do I have to get a new Hard drive and start over.
Background,
Macbook 13" just a bit over 14 months and out of warranty.
this started while it was still under warranty but I thought it was me moving them.
It started misplacing or fragmenting files, although they were listed where they should be(IE:
Scanner output or documents folders) without an Icon next to the name of the file. When you click
the file to open it it disappeared. Other files in the same folders with Icons next to them did
open normally.
Being new to macs I thought it was me misplacing them, since I was saving them to a jump drive
anyhow, it didn't concern me all that much at first.
The files are still on the hard drive just not where they should be.
Next issue,
I had a message the other night there was an update for Safari, so when I let it update and restart
it would not sign on to Safari. Error message: Safari quit unexpectedly, try again.
I call Tech support and after trying a few things he had me reload the OS because there was no
option to just reload Safari. It reloaded but with what would seem to be corrupted previous system
folder.since my files were still missing.
I got everything all set back up with the previous system file but my files were still missing.
Since Apple wouldn't give me a clue as to what was happening I decided to reload again, and wound
up with several versions of Previous system folders and began deleting what I thought were
corrupted ones trying to keep the oldest one.
Well it seems i must have deleted an important one since it won't let me back in.
So unless I can find a way to hack into the drive I need to replace it and start over.
Thanks for any help

I searched to see if this was covered, and I didn't find anything....
BUT....
Now, when I do a google search, there are two boxes by each result to either promote or remove that
result? Is that new? I don't remember that happening yesterday....
