I'm a newb to Macs but a windows expert to some extent. I'm trying to help a friend get XP running on his 2.5 ghz MBP (the non one piece aluminum one) via Bootcamp. I've got XP installed, and in the process of trying to update it with SP2, I get an error that says I don't have any hard drive space. I checked My Computer and of the 117GB of space that I allocated for this partition using Boot Camp Assistant in OSX, only 8GB was free! I tried to clean up the partition and defrag it, but XP said that the partition did not need to be defragmented and that there was virtually nothing on the partition! I am using the NTFS file system.

Keep in mind I told Boot Camp Assistant to divide the partitions evenly and nothing else has been installed on XP..

I don't know if there is a way to manage and view all the partitions of the physical hard disk in OSX. I am looking at the desktop in OSX (or whatever you guys call it) and I can see a drive called "Untitled". I'm assuming this is the windows partition.

Does anyone know what went wrong or what can be done other than trying to delete the partition and reinstalling windows?

I have a unibody Macbook 2.4 with 4GB RAM, running the latest version of Leopard (10.5.5). In activity monitor, I see each process has uses virtual memory of over half a gig, with a total VM size of over 40GB. :eek: Is this normal? Is all this virtual memory eating space on my hard disk? Why does each process require so much virtual memory? Is all the software on my Macbook, bloatware?

The attachments show what I am saying. Do others also have similar VM statistics?

I've been having all sorts of problems lately on my Macbook Pro. Things are starting to slow down. A restart doesn't fix it. I'm pissed off how Safari acts like it's running on the iPhone(before firmware 2.2 that is). It crashes like every 30 minutes or something. Even when I'm scrolling Macrumors.

Here's another thing. Whenever I click Restart from the apple menu, does nada. Only thing it closes is my iTunes. Safari, Mail, iCal just sit there.

Then, I manually quit the app but I have to force-quit mail every single time. Even when I'm not restarting. Mail works awesome and fetches my gmail and everything but it refuses to quit. I have to force quit at least 3 times for it to actually quit.

So, I'm thinking to erasing everything and do a clean install of Leopard. But before doing that, I wanted to ask if it is practical, because I have a lot of stuff on here so back up would take hours.

I mean, do users who do a clean install experience that new fast feeling?


P.S. My hard disk space is about 65 GB out of 200. Not too bad right? I don't believe that is the problem.

This is my first post, I recently bought a used MBA, I always want one when it first came out, finally wait until now because of the big price drop:)

My first mod to my MBA is to upgrade the hard drive.

I wasn't pay much attention when I purchase this replacement hard disk, didn't notice the MBA only takes 5mm height, as most 1.8" in the market are 8mm.

But since it's in my hand right now, I decided to put it on see if the MBA recognizes it.

Not too much surprise, leopard installation went very smoothly.

After the installation, the available space is about 95gb.

And because of the 5400rpm, it feels faster.

Too bad the bottom won't close because of the height of this drive.

But at least this gives me an idea, and I know there's a Toshiba 1.8" 120gb 4200rpm 5mm out there, and it should fits perfectly in MBA.

Anyway, I'm still debating myself rather getting this Toshiba drive or a Samsung 32gb SSD(Same drive as used in the Rev.A SSD version, but different capacity)
As the price of these two drives are pretty much the same (around $150 range)
I have another computer for my main work, so I'm toward getting a 32gb SSD:p

Just brought home my new external hard disk - it works fine. (for now) :rolleyes:

I've now moved all of my movies (which were, and still are in my iTunes library) from the User>Music>iTunes>Movies folder to my hard disk.

Now, when i try and play a movie, naturally it says "The movie could not be played because the original file has not been found. Would you like to locate the file?".

So - yes, I locate the file and everything's back to normal, but the trouble is, i've got 240 movies to go through! All are stored in the same folder, so it's just a case of clicking "Yes" for each file and looking through the external hard disk to find the movie.

1) Is there a quicker way to locate all of the movies in my library? Perhaps using automator? (I don't know how to use this, so any instructions would be greatly appreciated) Or can it be done another way?

AND/OR, BETTER STILL...

2) Is there a way of changing the default "Movies" folder for iTunes (like you can do for the default "Music" folder) through some sort of advanced preferences menu? I suppose this would rectify the problem in number 1, as well as make sure all movies that are downloaded in the future are placed in this folder automatically.

I'm a Mac newbie with a MBP. I can see my Windows XP system in the Finder under shared, as well as a networked hard disk I added with an smb connection. These systems are all on a linksys router.

However, when I go to the terminal and try to access these same systems by name, using ping, ssh, etc., the Mac cannot find them.

And my XP box cannot find my Mac using ping from a Cygwin terminal.

Any ideas what I should be trying to make this work?

(The other systems are on dynamic IPs; I'd rather not switch them to fixed IPs and hard code them into /etc/hosts.)

Mac OS X 10.5 has an elegant backup system ("Time Machine") but if you want to use it, you have to prepare a huge empty HDD. If you don't have one, or you want to make backup through a network (like iDisk), Sync!Sync!Sync! is a better choice.

This week I got my hands on LG's brand new and recently released LG X110 Netbook with embedded HSDPA which I want to test as an alternative to the HTC Shift UMPC. Since the LG X110 sports a massive 160 GB hard disk drive, I planned to partition it into two drives, C: and D: which I do with most of my PCs and Notebooks anyway. While C: holds the operating system (in this case Netbook-typical Windows XP only) and programs, D: is used to store all my documents. The benefit is that I don't have to take care about my documents in case I have to re-install the operating system because D: isn't formatted or deleted but C: only.
