I have a unibody Macbook 2.4 with 4GB RAM, running the latest version of Leopard (10.5.5). In
activity monitor, I see each process has uses virtual memory of over half a gig, with a total VM
size of over 40GB. Is this normal? Is all this virtual memory eating space on my hard disk?
Why does each process require so much virtual memory? Is all the software on my Macbook,
bloatware?
The attachments show what I am saying. Do others also have similar VM statistics?

I've been having all sorts of problems lately on my Macbook Pro. Things are starting to slow down.
A restart doesn't fix it. I'm pissed off how Safari acts like it's running on the iPhone(before
firmware 2.2 that is). It crashes like every 30 minutes or something. Even when I'm scrolling
Macrumors.
Here's another thing. Whenever I click Restart from the apple menu, does nada. Only thing it closes
is my iTunes. Safari, Mail, iCal just sit there.
Then, I manually quit the app but I have to force-quit mail every single time. Even when I'm not
restarting. Mail works awesome and fetches my gmail and everything but it refuses to quit. I have
to force quit at least 3 times for it to actually quit.
So, I'm thinking to erasing everything and do a clean install of Leopard. But before doing that, I
wanted to ask if it is practical, because I have a lot of stuff on here so back up would take
hours.
I mean, do users who do a clean install experience that new fast feeling?
P.S. My hard disk space is about 65 GB out of 200. Not too bad right? I don't believe that is the
problem.
P.P.S: Running 10.5.5

Hi, all.
This is my first post, I recently bought a used MBA, I always want one when it first came out,
finally wait until now because of the big price drop:)
My first mod to my MBA is to upgrade the hard drive.
I wasn't pay much attention when I purchase this replacement hard disk, didn't notice the MBA only
takes 5mm height, as most 1.8" in the market are 8mm.
But since it's in my hand right now, I decided to put it on see if the MBA recognizes it.
Not too much surprise, leopard installation went very smoothly.
After the installation, the available space is about 95gb.
And because of the 5400rpm, it feels faster.
Too bad the bottom won't close because of the height of this drive.
But at least this gives me an idea, and I know there's a Toshiba 1.8" 120gb 4200rpm 5mm out there,
and it should fits perfectly in MBA.
Anyway, I'm still debating myself rather getting this Toshiba drive or a Samsung 32gb SSD(Same
drive as used in the Rev.A SSD version, but different capacity)
As the price of these two drives are pretty much the same (around $150 range)
I have another computer for my main work, so I'm toward getting a 32gb SSD:p
Here are some picture taken from the iphone.

Live 7.0.12
Live is the audio sequencer you can play like an instrument. It integrates
complete multitrack recording and editing functionality - play your studio arrangements on stage,
or record live improvisations and edit them in the studio. Even better, manipulate the speed and
pitch of any audio while it is streamed from disk - with exceptional flexibility and fidelity.
Live lets you use audio any way you want: looping, synchronizing, improvising, and recording have
never been faster, easier and more fun.
WHAT'S NEWVersion 7.0.12:
Improvements:
- MIDI surface controller support for the Alesis Master Control
- MIDI controller support for Vestax VCM 600
Bug fixes:
- Operator's voice stealing would not work properly.
- Under certain conditions an empty MIDI effect Rack could lead to audio drop-outs.
- The 'Rename' command for an Impulse slot would not be available via the context menu.
- A copied or moved Reverb would not properly show the correct curve with Diffusion Network
enabled.
- After installing content packages, a dialog could show a message about a failed installation
although the installation was successful.
- A copied or moved Tension instrument would not show the correct filter curve.
- Dragging a particular chain from a Drum Rack into 'empty' Arranger space could crash Live.
- Moving a clip in a track with an External Instrument and routed to a multitimbral plug-in
could crash Live.
- Moving zones in the the Sampler could lead to hard disk dropouts.
- Live's search index would not properly handle version 2.3 ID3 tags.
- Dragging in a clip containing an Audio Unit plug-in could cause a message box to appear,
canceling the drag.
- Tighter MIDI timing when looping in the Arranger.
- Files would incorrectly be dated as “Yesterday” during a few hours
around midnight.
- The macro settings of a rack containing certain third party plug-ins would not properly
restored when loading the rack.
- Having multiple automation lanes on an audio track and removing one lane would not properly
display the audio waveform on the remaining lanes.
- Doing the the Capture and Insert Scene command could create a memory leak.
- When running as MIDI clock slave, Live would only display a rounded to the nearest integer
tempo.
- The functionality to ask the AU plug-in for its supported formats would not work properly.
- If Live would run as ReWire slave but would not get called from the ReWire master for some
time, a message box would appear to inform about that problem. This message box again could lead
to a crash of Live and the ReWire master. Now, the the message about the inactive ReWire master
is displayed on the status bar.
- Sending a MIDI program change message from an external MIDI source into Live would lead to a
crash.
- Depending on the structure of the current Live set, arming a track could be extremely slow.
- Unlock offline would not work properly.
REQUIREMENTS

Just brought home my new external hard disk - it works fine. (for now)
I've now moved all of my movies (which were, and still are in my iTunes library) from the
User>Music>iTunes>Movies folder to my hard disk.
Now, when i try and play a movie, naturally it says "The movie could not be played because the
original file has not been found. Would you like to locate the file?".
So - yes, I locate the file and everything's back to normal, but the trouble is, i've got
240 movies to go through! All are stored in the same folder, so it's just a case of
clicking "Yes" for each file and looking through the external hard disk to find the movie.
1) Is there a quicker way to locate all of the movies in my library? Perhaps using automator? (I
don't know how to use this, so any instructions would be greatly appreciated) Or can it be done
another way?
AND/OR, BETTER STILL...
2) Is there a way of changing the default "Movies" folder for iTunes (like you can do for the
default "Music" folder) through some sort of advanced preferences menu? I suppose this would
rectify the problem in number 1, as well as make sure all movies that are downloaded in the future
are placed in this folder automatically.
Cheers for anyone who can help me on this one.

I'm a Mac newbie with a MBP. I can see my Windows XP system in the Finder under shared, as well as
a networked hard disk I added with an smb connection. These systems are all on a linksys
router.
However, when I go to the terminal and try to access these same systems by name, using ping, ssh,
etc., the Mac cannot find them.
And my XP box cannot find my Mac using ping from a Cygwin terminal.
Any ideas what I should be trying to make this work?
(The other systems are on dynamic IPs; I'd rather not switch them to fixed IPs and hard code them
into /etc/hosts.)
Thanks.

Sync!Sync!Sync! 3.6
Sync!Sync!Sync!... Do you have backup copy of your data? If your hard disk drive
breaks, you can buy apps and musics but you can never buy back original data like documents,
photos, emails, etc.
Sync!Sync!Sync! helps you to make copies of your data by synchronizing two
folders. It's very easy to set up, and once this is done, all you have to do is push a button. Of
course, Sync!Sync!Sync! can also run automatically while you are away from home, or sleeping.
It's also AppleScript compatible, so you can make your own backup flow. There are some sample
scripts in the package, so please try to find out what system works best for you.
Mac OS X 10.5 has an elegant backup system ("Time Machine") but if you want to use it, you have
to prepare a huge empty HDD. If you don't have one, or you want to make backup through a network
(like iDisk), Sync!Sync!Sync! is a better choice.
WHAT'S NEWVersion 3.6:
- Change to count up the number of files which should be processed.
- Modify the bug that the message of the update checking function was only showed in Japanese.
REQUIREMENTSMac OS X 10.3.9 or later.

This week I got my hands on LG's brand new and recently released LG X110 Netbook with embedded
HSDPA which I want to test as an alternative to the HTC Shift UMPC. Since the LG X110 sports a
massive 160 GB hard disk drive, I planned to partition it into two drives, C: and D: which I do
with most of my PCs and Notebooks anyway. While C: holds the operating system (in this case
Netbook-typical Windows XP only) and programs, D: is used to store all my documents. The benefit is
that I don't have to take care about my documents in case I have to re-install the operating system
because D: isn't formatted or deleted but C: only. However, since the LG X110 is a typical Netbook,
it doesn't features an inbuilt optical drive which makes installation of an OS a little bit more
difficult. pp [ba

height="388" style="display:block;" / Asus' long awaited all-in-one touchscreen PC, the Eee Top, is
now out in the wild... at least in Taiwan. The 15.6-inch display “nettop” runs Windows
XP and holds an Intel Atom N270 processor with 1GB of memory and a 160GB hard disk drive within its
chassis. It also comes with a 1.3MP webcam, two integrated 4W speakers and a nifty little dimmable
LED keyboard light./p pimg src="http://cache.gawker.com/assets/images/gizmodo/2008/11/eeetop2.jpg"
width="494" height="587" style="display:block;" //p pThe Eee Top will definitely not please gamers,
Photoshop pros or their ilk, but the simplified custom interface (made for touching!) and clean
design make it a decent option for more casual, social PC users. As for pricing, the desktop is
going for about $565 in Taiwan, but I'm willing to bet it'll be closer to the $400 to $500 price
point when it comes to the U.S. [a

Hack a Day -
2 days and 12 hours ago
A coworker approached us today wondering if they could get a performance boost using Samsung’s newly announced 256GB
SSD. Most of their work is done in browser, so we said “no”. They’d only
see benefit if they were reading/writing large files. Their system has plenty of RAM, and we
decided to take a different approach. By creating a filesystem in RAM, you can read and write
files much faster than on a typical hard drive. We decided to put the browser’s file cache
into RAM.
We installed the Espérance DV preference
pane in OSX to facilitate RAM disk creation. It’s really simple to setup. Just select how
much space you want to dedicate to the disk and create it. You can have Espérance DV
recreate the RAM disk on start and even have it automatically restore from a disk image. There is
a check box for moving Safari’s Web Cache to the RAM disk, which creates the necessary
symlink. You can also use it to speed up Xcode builds. Moving Firefox’s cache is fairly
simple:
$ rm -r ~/Library/Caches/Firefox
$ ln -s /Volumes/RamDisk/Firefox ~/Library/Caches/Firefox
Since the browser isn’t having to hit the hard disk on every page load anymore, the
performance is much snappier. Xbench says our random reads
from RAM are now 86.19MB/sec instead of 0.61MB/sec when the cache was on the hard drive.
We immediately began looking for ways to get the entire OS into RAM; Tin Hat is a version of Linux that does that.
We’re very happy with the results of our RAM disk browser upgrade. Let us know in the
comments if you’ve had a similar experience doing this in Windows.
