So here's the scoop
I am a pc user - have had the same dell POS for 5 years now. It is an ok machine and lasted this
long (im pretty good with computer)
You can imagine that I only have 80gb for a hard drive on this - and it's slow as anything.
SOOOOOO with that being said I am buying the new MBP. I have waited a long time for them to update
it and I think it's amazing.
Here's the question.
Whichhhh do I buy and WHEN?
I do not edit movies - or pictures and what not, and I understand thats one of the main reasons to
bump up to the 2.53 etc.
BUT I do want a really fast computer with plenty of space - and not to be pushed to the limits if I
have aim - web browser - messanger applications - and maybe poker programs running.
Which configuration do you guys think I should get...the 2.4? 2.53? 250gb? 320gb?
And black friday? Rumor i heard was they are giving another 100 off of the student discount - and
throwing in an ipod touch.
let me know what you all think.
oh... and apple care? and if i buy the lower model mbp and upgrade the ram and hd on my own does it
void the warranty???

Ok, love the new mac so far, got the basic macally/allymac model 1299 with yep no lights but hey
just finished school and so no more lectures for me! Going to ignore the credit card to the new
year.
While i find the information posted here invaluable, grow up everybody please - the flaming of each
other is past a joke, it seems to be taking over every thread. Once you get past that the help on
these forums is remarkable. Lets not scare of the newbees to the mac fold.
For those who been on macs for years, just want to give a different tail - got my first macbook
white in 2006 for about 1500 all in by the time memory was upgraded. Overall was very happy with it
- it replaced a HP that overheated all the time and eventually melted its board. And the big
selling point was the xp installed. comfort blanket or what- it allowed us to buy feeling safe- but
after first couple of months never used, and so wiped off. clever one apple.
Studied abroad, and so last year came back leaving my wife abroad finishing her studies. When we
first got the mac, she hated it - due to nothing being where she was used to. But by the time I
came back she would not let go of it! Sometimes to save a marriage sacrifices have to be made-
sigh!
So october 2007 had to buy a new machine back in USA. Trying to save money i bought a $550 compaq.
Big mistake - hate vista ! This is how my last year with it went
1) No camera - so had to go buy a usb one- first cheap one sucked - so ended up getting the logitec
$100 more expense - drivers did not work with skype and vista - spent 2 weeks before found right
drivers and skype update to get videos etc to just sinc
2) machine initially seemed ok - but by the time of having virus software etc - so slow had to
upgrade stock memory - another $100 plus $50 for all the software
3) machine still slow - vistas solution turn off all visuals - ie looks like xp without the
reliability- well done microsoft- whats the point of having cheap machines if they are unusable
4) 2 months ago - got a tv usb card - guess what - works excellent on a friends xp machine- crashes
all the time in vista! even with call to companies lovely indian call center for 2 hours and the
software so called fixes- solution run the tv first though an analog conversion box another $50 so
that the machine can cope with it - still crashes - so happy!
5) one month ago - conveniently wireless card breaks 2 weeks post warranty - another $80 for an usb
card
6) 2 weeks ago hard drive crashes
The screen issues are interesting - i really feel for those effected, so far been lucky - either
that or going blind with old age.
The overall feel of the ally machine is excellent -so sturdy. It never gets hot, has not crashed,
and feels like my data is secure - now only if i could work out the time/Dr who back up thingy-
well will skirt through this forum for that answer
Overall i believe i am part of the target market apple is pitching for- fed up with Vista - not
really a power users - internet, videos , some dvd burning, skype (and now ichat), basic word
processing/spreads etc. Want something that just works- does not have to be the best - just
reliable and easy to use.
Installed - yahoo messenger, skype, open office 3 (love it - reminds me of microsoft 10 years ago -
simple layout, seems really stable), firefox 3 (for the occasions have had non compatible sites for
safari), handbrake and xmind - (students take a look at this - a mind mapping program -free, very
nice)
Oh and as i type in the coffee shop - about 1/2 the machines here are mac - thats a big change from
2 years ago when maybe it was one in 10. And a lot of people have come up and looked at the machine
- interestingly no one has asked about speed - its all about reliability, crashes and the sturdy
case. Target market - i think they have it about right - once the usual first generation teething
problems are over. Several are new converts due to the iphones they are carrying - do not under
estimate how much they feel at home with the multi-gestures that they have kind of started to get
used to with their iphones, also heard comments from a few that the change in experience in surfing
the web etc with their iphone has been worth the money, and has made them thought maybe a change to
macbook is also worth it. Critical mass in the midrange lapbook market is happening here.
Oh and no-one, and i mean no-one has asked the price! People seem to accept Apples position in the
market place.
I dont think apple cares about the true gamer- power house user/modifier - and i dont blame them -
the potential market for the average Joe is big enough. Yeah it is expensive - but what I have
learnt in the last 12 months is the bottom end windows machines are now garbage - you need to spend
at least $900 to get something in the mac reliability range
And personally 4gb windows = 2gb mac for usability, vista has really poisoned my mind, worried that
2gb not enough - then caught myself and reminded that the XP machine i used to have, before it
reached critical mass and 3 mile on me, worked well with 512mb).
AND SO THE BIG ISSUE IS - is the $400 premium for mac worth it (and yes i know a lot will argue if
the equivalent specs etc then its a lot less - but remember the target market we look at
usability/function/form not equivalent specs)
Well how do you value
1) time saved on crashes, viruses (my god have had problems with those - welcome to shared
documents at college), and document retrieval
2) the fun of using os- strange but actually forgot how pleasant the user experience is on a mac
compared to vista, everything from the selecting of program to use with finger swipes to the
scrolling with fingers - 1 finger, 2 finger, 3 finger and so on - getting the hang of this now, but
making using my friends windows impossible (sneaky apple - its like having a auto then trying to
drive stick) - even the simple function of installing a program - it feels like a friend rather
than a combat of wits
3) and did i mention it seems to load, boot and run everything real fast, no strange little
thinking icon - well may be a technicolor beachball has appeared once or twice- but so rare its a
novelty when it does
3) and finally the staff at the macstore - surprised me how they really wanted to genuinely help
and no question seems to be too stupid for them - they must really load up on the prozac in the
mornings
Is the premium on a Toyota/Honda worth it - initially expensive, less discount on sticker, but high
resale value, not really sexy but dependable. sound familiar? Really the Toyota driver is Apple
target market. And maybe the Lexus for the Pro-book, again two brands for one manufacturer at
different price/perceived feature price points
Now if only ATT will sort out the teathering issues
ps - for all of you discussing the right case - i refuse to spend $40 on a sleeve that costs $3 in
asia - go to ups and spend $2 of a poly bubble mailer envelope (wipeable plastic - and bubble you
got to love it)- works excellent. Was going to splurge on the $3 holiday wrapped bubble envelope
but does not quite fit - shame really liked the penguins with the bobble hats and snowballs

Hi, im pretty new to the macs but have been using pc's, windows for approx 25 years.
Im hoping some of you guys may be able to help me here. I want to import the jpegs off my canon
a640 and put them onto an ext hard drive. My imac sees the hard drive and the folders contained on
it but doesnt see my camera. If i go into iphoto i can import the pics there. But i would just like
to be able to see the camera as just another usb storage device. i have 3 different accounts set up
on the mac for myself , my wife and our business. the idea of the ext hard drive is that each
account can access it and take out whichever pics need working with. i dont particularly like the
way iphoto just assumes all responsibility for how they are organised. i just want a folder with
jpegs in it .
Hope someone can help, its driving me nuts.

I bought the new MBP the week it was released and really don't use my iMac for much now so I've
been considering selling it and possibly replacing it with one of those sweet new ADCs (although
I'd also need a new desk as the shelf on the desk is 0.8cm too low :().
I was just wondering what people think would be a reasonable price for my iMac
It is a late 2006 20" Core 2 Duo iMac, 2.16GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB Hard Drive, brand new white Apple
keyboard. It would only be running Tiger though as I want to keep my Leopard DVD. It would have a
Vista Home Premium (not that that is a bonus of course ;)) since the copy I have is OEM so linked
to the machine.
Thanks.

After seeing the hard drive clock at Alan Parekhs Electronic Projects I just had to make my own. I
have plenty of old hard drives, microcontrollers and a programmer so it was easy to get started.
nbsp; nbsp; Special thanks to the PICList guys for suggesting the PICkit 2 as a replacement for my
old, unsupported programmer and other technical questions I had. The mailing list is a great
resource for anyone wanting to get into the world of microcontrollers. nbsp; nbsp; The clock works
by removing the top of the hard drive and cutting a slot into the platter. Then lights are mounted
underneath and flashed as it spins. By timing it right you can create the illusion of clock hands,
color bars or other designs.

I've had this issue for ages now and not got to the bottom of it, having a boring sunday so going
to try and get windows working to play a few games. Anyway the problem is when i try to install
windows it gets stuck on the screen which says 'setup is starting windows'
Another problem is when i restart my mac it doesn't restart it powers down etc but the hard drive
just keeps spinning and it never reboots i have to force it.
All the threads i have found on setup is starting windows have not proven helpful, i've got a mbp
c2d and the windows is legit.
Any ideas macworld?

So I have a whole ton of downloaded movies on my external hard drive and I was looking into making
a power hour with IMDBs top 60 movies. Well I've got all the movies now and they are mostly all in
AVI format. I have Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 and I've used it for many a project, but I ran into a
snag when I attempted this project...
Every AVI movie I try to import comes up with an error saying there is a missing or unknown
codec... I googled plenty and came up with no results... any suggestions?

I'm a newb to Macs but a windows expert to some extent. I'm trying to help a friend get XP running
on his 2.5 ghz MBP (the non one piece aluminum one) via Bootcamp. I've got XP installed, and in the
process of trying to update it with SP2, I get an error that says I don't have any hard drive
space. I checked My Computer and of the 117GB of space that I allocated for this partition using
Boot Camp Assistant in OSX, only 8GB was free! I tried to clean up the partition and defrag it, but
XP said that the partition did not need to be defragmented and that there was virtually nothing on
the partition! I am using the NTFS file system.
Keep in mind I told Boot Camp Assistant to divide the partitions evenly and nothing else has been
installed on XP..
I don't know if there is a way to manage and view all the partitions of the physical hard disk in
OSX. I am looking at the desktop in OSX (or whatever you guys call it) and I can see a drive called
"Untitled". I'm assuming this is the windows partition.
Does anyone know what went wrong or what can be done other than trying to delete the partition and
reinstalling windows?

Fed up with ugly routers and clunky hard drives, a growing number of consumers are
looking for well-designed gadgets that complement decor instead of cluttering desktops and clashing
with furniture. Many credit Apple's iPhone, with its strikingly simple forms, for raising the bar
on expectations for good design in consumer electronics. And while art and design professionals say
that gadgets like mobile phones and personal computers are becoming increasingly well-designed,
they also say many electronic products still need to work on their appearance.

I purchased a used ibook from owc in January and have had it back to them twice for repairs.
Lately, it stopped booting up again and they told me to use ifxit.com to take the mobo out and ship
it to Arizona to have the solder refloated. I did and got it back, put it together and it would
boot up, only to run for 15 minutes and shut down. Thinking I missed something, I dissasembled it
today and reassembled it. Now it turns on with a blank screen, the fan runs on high, and it will go
no further. I tried to reset the power manager, reset the p-ram, the hard drive is only a few
months old and my brain is getting fried with frustration. Any suggestions would be
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kupgas

Just purchased a 1 TB back up hard drive for my MacBook Alum that I have to send back because it
has a dent from shipping... I have it backed up using Time Machine now. But before I send this
computer off, how can i make SURE that everything is on there? I enter Time Machine and it's all
there. Any other way to check?
Also, does this also back up all my setting and software?
Sorry if these are stupid questions, but I've never backed up a computer before.

I have been running OS X 10.5 straight since its release and it is starting to drag a little bit. I
was wanting to do a clean restore using Time Machine because I have a lot of music on my hard
drive.
Is there a way to restore using time machine without restoring all of the junk files that are
slowing down the system?

Hey I have a 500GB Western Digital SATA drive inside an unbranded enclosure that I use for Time
Machine.
If I plug the drive in, it will work for about a minute, then I get an error about unsafe removal
(The same one you get when you unplug something without ejecting it), I put my ear up to the drive,
and it sounds like it spins up for a second, then spins down, then up again, then down, then
up.......
My estimate is that some kind of power supply inside the enclosure is failing, could this be
it?
What I have tried:
- Reformatting the drive
- Using the power cord from my external DVD burner (They appear to be identical)
- Placing it horizontally instead of vertically
- Throwing the drive against the wall and smashing it with a hammer repeatedly (just kidding)
This has been going on for about 3 weeks now, but it used to just be intermittent.
What could be the problem?
Thanks

width="494" height="306" style="display:block;" /Most of the new desktops featuring Intel's
impressive Core i7 processor are straight-up gaming powerhouses, with pricetags to match. That's
why I'm so pleased to see a glowing review of Dell's Studio XPS, which starts at a very affordable
$950. DesktopReview took it for a spin and found that, despite one or two small problems, the
Studio XPS is lightning fast and a great deal./p pThe quad-core proc was able to handle audio and
video compression a few times faster than rival chips from AMD, and was the top of the heap in
almost every benchmark they threw at it. Given it's not a gaming computer, the Studio XPS did
extremely well on the gaming benchmark, and yes, it can run Crysis without exploding. The
downsides? The design isn't heartstopping, as it looks like pretty much every other Dell machine
out there, and DesktopReview thinks the hard drive configuration could be faster. But all in all,
it's a stellar buy if you want a fast-as-it-gets machine that can even do a little gaming on the
side. [a href="http://www.desktopreview.com/default.asp?newsID=537"DesktopReview/a via a

Hey guys, this is MacRumors afterall, and I personally think speculating is fun. Whether it's
speculating about whose going to win the Superbowl, what trades your favorite baseball team will
look like in the offseason, who would make a good couple, or what Apple's lineup will look like!
:D
Right now I have the flu, so I have nothing better to do, here is what I think the iPod lineup
should look like by fall 2009:
APPLE COMPLETE 2009 iPod Lineup:
I personally think they are going to get rid of the 8GB, and have three iPod Touch models:
iPod Touch: 16 GB - $149, 32 GB w/ camera - $249$, 64 GB w/ camera - $349
Basically the same iPod touch, with a camera built in, louder speakers, better battery life, more
memory, cheaper, better 3D capabilities, and a more refined OS. The 16 GB iPod Touch will NOT have
the camera.
Apple will then drop the iPod Nano, update the Classic but also make it so it can conveniently be
used as an external hard drive for any Mac or PC. This would be perfect for the everyday college
student who needs extra space but doesn't want to carry a hefty external hard drive and iPod with
him, or the everyday business man working in a call center. Apple would of course have to make the
iPod Classic software to make it be used as both an external hard drive and iPod conveniently.
These are what the iPod Classic lineup should look like:
iPod Classic: 160 GB - $199, 320 GB - $299
Apple will also update the iPod Shuffle completely, and make it so that it has an easier interface,
instead of constantly tapping the forward button to skip through a song, the person with the iPod
Shuffle has the shuffle in his pocket, but also a little remote control piece that goes in his
hand. The iPod shufle itself doesn't have any buttons, but the wireless controller does. The
wireless controller if designed right can fit perfectly in one's hand and you control the iPod from
there. This would be 10x more convenient for people running while using a shuffle or working out,
what the shuffle is mainly manufactured for. Addition to this, when you aren't working out or
whatever, you also can connect the wireless controller and iPod Shuffle itself together and use it
like it has been previously. The iPod Shuffle would also come with bluetooth headphone
capability.
iPod Shuffle: 4 GB - $59, 8 GB - $99
iPhone Lineup:
Apple will increase the battery life of the iPhone, a better camera, and the memory of the iPhone.
It will also receive 4G if it is out then, and get a more refined OS along with the touch. Apple
will also make it have even better 3D capabilities, and sign more companies to make games for the
new Touch and iPhone for iTunes. Apple will also make it so that Flash is optional on the iPod
Touch and iPhone. If you want better battery life, Flash would be turned off. This would also make
it so game designers have more options. Apple's game designers will start to develop games that
takes advantage of the iPhone and iPod Touch's better graphics capabilities, therefore some games
will not be able to be played on 2G and 1G Touches and iPhones.
iPhone: 32 GB - $199, 64 GB - $299

Has anyone else tried setting up an encrypted drive?
Wow, what POS software comes with this thing!! It claims to be Leopard and Time Machine
compatible.
After installing "Freecom Hard Drive Pro" software, for which there is no updated version for OS X
since last year's version on the freecom.com support website:
- it enables the "backup" button on the HD, which, rather than triggering Time Machine, seems to
back up independently from TimeMachine. I stopped it as it was apparently copying stuff over to a
different location than Time Machine
- the only reason I bothered to install the software was to use encryption. After installing the
software, the manual instructs the user to press the "Encryption" button. This brings up: "you
don't have an encrypted partition set up yet" (good). Then click "Configure" / "Modify
Encryption":
"UNKNOWN EXCEPTION GETENCRYPTION"
From there it goes downhill!!
Freecom didn't notice this minor detail????????
Perhaps I am being too harsh and someone can come to my rescue with a good pointer? Please!!
