You Don't Mess with the Zohan
Adam Sandler wandering into topical territory, actually making sense, and stll making the funny? I was surprised too! Don't worry, he still packs in plenty of juvenile gags about the outlandish size of his package and drags in every ancient ethnic stereotype possible, but as an Israeli intelligence operative who wants to become a hairdresser, he pulls off the neat trick of creating a completely silly character in a wish-fulfillment scenario that, well, nearly everyone wants to see. Rent it. Available rated (theatrical cut) on a single-disc DVD and unrated in single-disc and double-disc DVD editions. The Blu-ray includes both the rated and unrated versions.

The Happening
Maybe the inclusion of "over 1 hour of intense bonus footage not shown in theaters!" -- extended versions of "Lion Attack" and Survivalist Porch" among them -- will convert me. Maybe I'll watch M. Night Shyamalan's first R-rated horror flick again some day to see if it still makes me roll my eyes and laugh out loud at scenes that were evidently intended to make me shiver in my seat. Maybe one day pigs will fly. Skip it. Available on DVD and Blu-ray with deleted scenes and "making of" features.

Sleeping Beauty
Scott Weinberg has already written about the awesomeness of the new edition of Disney's animated treasure on Blu-ray. This is a classic no-brainer, a movie that both young and old can dip back into time and again. Buy it. Available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Epic's game engine to be used in multi-platform action horror title by Resident Evil creator

This weekend we added our exclusive interview with Toby Wilkins, the director behind Magnet Releasing's Splinter (review), which opens in theaters this Halloween. In the film that's being praised by the horror community, a young couple has retreated to the wilderness for a romantic camping weekend-but the trip quickly spirals into a nightmare when they are car-jacked by an escaped convict and his girlfriend. Thrown together by chance, no one can imagine the terrifying horror that awaits the two couples at a remote and isolated gas station.

Vanguard Cinema has announced two upcoming indie horror titles that they'll be giving a DVD release. First is Zack Parker's QUENCH, which arrives on DVD October 28th. Check out the film's official website for more. Arriving on DVD December 23rd is Anthony Falcon's 99 PIECES, which comes in the vein of SAW. When Joshua Licet wakes up with his wife missing he must decide whether to lock himself in his house for forty days and 40 nights of torture or to leave her to die.

There are still many in Silicon Valley who remember that the Microsoft culture also led to business behavior that was judged to be illegal and that violated US anti-trust laws. There are many veteran entrepreneurs that have horror stories related to Microsoft.
The software giant has done well with its PR machine in Silicon Valley, where gradually I have perceived a rise in positive sentiment towards Microsoft, which could expand as a Google [GOOG] backlash builds. But Microsoft still has a long way to go in rebuilding trust.
Maybe it will be easier to mend Silicon Valley fences now that Bill Gates is gone.

Queue this one under rumor for now, but what our regular tipster has told us is that Milla Jovovich (pictured inside) is now set to play Alyssa Barron in Senator Entertainment and The Weinstein Company's Clock Tower, the adaptation of the best-selling survival horror videogame franchise from Capcom (Resident Evil, Street Fighter). We have NOT confirmed this, so watch this spot for an update. Jovovich has starred in films such as THE FIFTH ELEMENT, the RESIDENT EVIL franchise, ULTRAVIOLET and will be appearing in THE 4TH KIND and A PERFECT GETAWAY. Our horror fiends over at Dread Central are hosting a short contest entitled "8 Shorts to Die For," which is in conjunction with After Dark Films' "AFTER DARK HORRORFEST: 8 Films to Die For", which takes place January 9-15, 2009. Dread Central are HUGE fans of the annual Horrorfest, and are hosting the promotion, which you can read all about here. The filmmaker with the best short film will win a 120G Video iPod preloaded with 4 of the 8 Films to Die For from Horrorfest 2007 (specifically Mulberry St, Unearthed, Nightmare Man and Tooth & Nail)! Seven runner-ups will receive an all-access pass (or eight tickets) for Horrorfest® III, which runs this January 9th15th, 2009!

While Lionsgate's SAW V is set to hit theaters October 24th, the studio has been under scrutiny after dumping Clive Barker's THE MIDNIGHT MEAT TRAIN in discount theaters this summer, and planning a limited release for the musical-horror film REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA on November 7. In addition, J.T. Petty's THE BURROWERS is going stright-to-disc in April. Various reasons have been cited, none have been confirmed, but there are more movies that are having trouble hitting theaters - one such is the Spierig brothers' vampire pic DAYBREAKERS. While we've heard Lionsgate is very happy with the pic (and had originally planned a trilogy for the franchise), the studio has yet to confirm that the film will hit theaters.
